New information is pending regarding the connection between the Utah Howell family descending from Edmund Wheeler Howell and Richard Howell of Southold, Long Island.     For years it has been accepted that Edmund Wheeler was a 3rd-great-grandson of Richard (Richard, John, John, Reeves, James, Edmund Wheeler),   however, recent DNA tests show a descrepancy in the connections.     DNA information is available at www.familytreedna.com/public/howell.

The DNA for three descendents of Edmund Wheeler Howell are listed under group 11 "John Howell  Middle Island NY"  - kit numbers 5544 , 27444 and 27883.     You will note that the results are significantly different from those of descendents of Richard Howell from Southold (group 3), and different from those of Edward Howell of Southampton (group 2). Our opportunity is now to find where our Howell ancestors fit in.   Stay tuned.

Edmund Wheeler Howell lived in New York (at Riverhead and New York City) until 1846 when he moved his family to St. Louis. The family then moved to Honey Creek in the Council Bluffs, Iowa area before migrating west for Utah. Edmund Wheeler died of cholera near present-day Gothenburg, Dawson County, Nebraska in 1852 at the age of 35.

His wife, Sarah Vail, and their three surviving children finished the trek westward to Salt Lake City where Sarah married Otis Lysander Terry.     They eventually settled in Fairview, Sanpete County, Utah.

The information at left includes Sarah's obituary printed in the Mount Pleasant Pyramid on July 20, 1917 following her death at the age of 99.

Also at left, you'll fine some brief histories of Edmund and Sarah's three surviving children.

We would like to gather additional information on Elias Willis, Mary Lavina and Ophelia Ann and their families. If you have additional details, please notify the site coordinator listed on the left.

Has anyone considered a reunion at this level?
