It is believed that James Howell was born in Middle Island, Suffolk, New York. His
father Reeve was born and lived and was buried there. According to Reeves Howell brother
of James Howell, the family of James was all brought up in the old homestead in New Village,
which adjoined the house of Reeves youngest brother Richard Oakley Howell 6, on Middle
Country Road. The old house stood until the early days of the present century. James' 5 great
grand children used to find it an adventure to climb up through the chimney, almost a ruin, to the
attic, where they would find old stone crocks three feet high ancient spinning wheel and other
curiosities.

Elizabeth Hurtin second wife of James 5 Was the aunt of Rebecca Tuttle Homan the
wife of Richard Oakley 6. Elizabeth was a sister of Mrs. Louisa Homan, whose husband was a
minister and Louisa was mother of Rebecca and Sally Homan. (From Letters to Mrs. Elizabeth
Hurtin Howell)

Daniel Terry who lived at Terryville, Suffolk, N.Y. And Md. Nancy Howell was a brother
of Scudder Terry who md. Catherine Howell the sister of Nancy Howell.

The first mention of the name "New Village" Given to this new development was on 11
April 1835. Previous to that it was known as West Middle Island.

EDMUND WHEELER HOWELL 6, James 5 Reeve 4 John 3-2 Richard 1

In strange ways are genealogical records oft times built up. Among the papers of Richard
Oakley Howell 6 James 5 were found letters from his brother Edmund Wheeler Howell and also a
deed of land in the County of Suffolk, State of New York, sold to Richard Oakley Howell by
Edmund Wheeler Howell. The deed was made out and notarized on March 23, 1850 in
Pottawatomie County Iowa. Where it states Edmund lived.

The letters as early as 1847 show that Edmund lived and farmed in that part of the Middle
West for three or four years. That is the sole record.

All that was ever heard by his relatives in the east was that he had gone west with the
Mormons and died in Iowa on the way ( Actually the death occurred near present day Gothenburg, Nebraska.)

In the summer of 1947 Nathaniel R. Howell, a genealogist and historian for the town of
Bay Shore N.Y. came to Lake Grove, Long Island N.Y. seeking records of the Congregational
Church in which he hoped to find some information about the family of Howell.
No light was shed from this source on the fate of Edmund Wheeler Howell or his family.

While in Lake Grove Nathaniel R. Howell happened to call at the home where Caroline
Howell Grendler was visiting. She knew as little as he of the fate of Edmund.

After some months however Nathaniel R. Howell wrote Mrs. Grendler that he had been
handed a box of old papers which had belonged to a client of his, deceased, which he thought
might be of interest to Mr. Howell in his research. In this box he found a letter from one
Chauncey V. Howell of Fairview, Utah asking for information about relatives of Edmund W.
Howell giving what meager data of Edmund's ancestors he had. "I think this is your long lost
relative" wrote Nathaniel R Howell to Mrs. Grendler. Mrs. Grendler lost no time in writing
to Chauncey V. Howell who was greatly gratified to find the family connection. He proved to be
a second cousin just the age of her brother William both of the eighth generation.

Thus after a hundred years of silence is a genealogy built up. Tombstones old wills old
deeds all tell their story but often by devious and wholly unexpected paths light is shed on events
long since past.

Edmund Wheeler Howell has more than 600 descendants through his son and two
daughters who lived to continue their journey with their mother to their promised land.

Mrs. Grendler is a grand daughter of Richard Oakley Howell a brother of Edmund
Wheeler Howell.

Nathaniel R. Howell was a member of the Southold Howells. His pedigree is through
four Johns thus Nathaniel R 7 Nathaniel W 6 John 5 John 4 John 3 John 2 Richard 1.
He was Principal and teacher in New York Public Schools for 35 years. He wrote "Know the
Sunrise Country". He arranged bus rides taking people to points of interest in Suffolk County .
