Comparing the Southampton Howells and
the Southold Howells


 

At the same time that Richard Howell was growing up in Southold, another Howell family lived just 30 miles away in Southampton, Suffolk County, New York. Edward Howell moved from England to Boston in 1639, then moved on as one of the early settlers of Southampton in about 1640.*

Although many have assumed Richard Howell of Southold and Edward's son, Richard, of Southampton are the same person, evidence clearly shows otherwise:
