| This is Rosebud Begonia, more affectionately known as Rosie (and "Princess," "Pancetta," "Lammy, "Lammy-lish," and a whole host of other silly names). Rosie was our introduction to the wild, wonderful world of Bassets! She came to us as a young pup of 13 weeks. Ralph wanted a hunting buddy, but also wanted a Basset Hound. So we searched breeders of Field Trial dogs, and we found Rosie's breeders. Her pedigree is loaded with champions! Although we never tested her skills at field trials (she was spayed at 6 months and ineligeable to compete), she was a huntress extroadinairre, putting the springer spaniels and other hunting dogs to shame in the pursuit of pheasants! Every time Ralph would get the hunting gear out, Rosie would get so excited, especially when her bell collar was put on! She would sniff out and flush the pheasants for Ralph. When he got one, she would go sit near it, but not bring it back. She was not a Retriever, after all! And if he missed the shot? She would give him a look that said, "You big oaf! I did my job, now you do yours!!!" Rosie developed spondylosis (arthritis of the spine) at age 4, and sadly, her hunting career ended. She was quite happy as a couch-potato, however. But the treatment for spondylosis left her with a condition known as KCS, or "dry eye." She never let it get her down, though, and was a trooper when it came to getting her meds. Around the time she turned 9, she developed glaucoma in her left eye, a common disease in Basset Hounds. We were fortunate enough to be able to control the pressure in her eyes with medication, and she didn't need surgery to remove it. Still, she was such a trooper! In December 2003 we decided to have some lumps removed from her, and to our surprise and the vet's, one of them turned out to be a mast cell tumor, a very nasty and aggressive type of cancer. We started Rosie on chemotherapy with prednisone. She did fine until March of 2004, when she developed diabetes mellitus from the prednisone. Very rare, but it can happen - and did!. She went into diabetic shock, which severely compromised her kidneys. She left this world, and us, on Sunday, March 21, 2004, at 10.5 years old. Despite all of her medical problems, Rosie never let it get her down. We could all take a lesson from her! She lived life... she ruled our house and "the boyz" Flash and Spencer with an iron paw. She was very vocal, and would let you know exactly what she wanted. And when she wanted something, she wanted it NOW! She was the Queen of Bassetville Acres and all she surveyed! Rosie watches out for us from The Rainbow Bridge. We are quite sure Rosie had a "paw" in directing Jasmine to us. Jas is definitely her "own dog", but she has so many "Rosie-like" traits, it's scary. This little houndog still occupies a huge spot in the hearts of those who loved her. Rosie may be gone, but she will never be forgotten. |
