Update 3/23/2006: Sadly, Flash left us on Monday, February 27, 2006 at the ripe old age of 15 years, 8 months. His journey to the Rainbow Bridge was assisted by our wonderful, caring vet, Dr. Danci Mock of West Caldwell Animal Hospital. His kidneys failed, his liver wasn't in great shape, and our boy was just tired. He fought the good fight. We prayed for divine intervention, but it was not to be.

We miss you so much, our big, beautiful Flashy Guy. We know you're romping at the Bridge with Rosie, chasing the squirrels and bunnies, and dining on pork chops and filet mignon. You will forever hold a special place in all of our hearts.

Meet Flash (a/k/a Big Lug, Kissy-face boy, Sleepy-do, Most Handsome Guy)... Flash came to Bassetville Acres in November, 1997 via Tri-State Basset Hound Rescue.
When Rosie's illustrious hunting career ended, we decided that she needed a companion during the day while we were at work.I had heard about Basset Hound Rescue through the Basset Hound internet discussion list I belong to,
The Daily Drool. I contacted Tri-State, our local rescue, about adopoting a dog. But, I insisted that my sweet little Rosie must approve, since she would be spending her entire day with the dog.
We went to meet a very young, very beautiful, very ACTIVE 1.5 year old Basset girl who was rescued in Brooklyn--she was to be used as Pit Bull bait (don't even ask! You can figure it out).  But this sweetie had waaay too much energy for my Rosie, and they did not get along.
A week or so later, Tri-State called and told us about a 7 year old boy in Staten Island. He was still with his owner, but needed to find another home because the elderly gentleman was moving into a retirement community, no dogs allowed. Rosie and I drove to SI to meet this boy named Flash. I can't say it was love at first sight, maybe "tolerance at first sight" is more appropos. They got along very well. They basically sniffed each other, then Rosie went on to sniff the rest of the house and yard, without giving Flash a second look.
We decided that since they seemed ok together, that we would adopt Flash. A week later, the owner tearfully gave up his dog, and we, with big smiles on our faces, took him to our home.
Flash took a little while to adjust. He didn't understand where he was, what happened to his family, why was he given up, and all that goes with being uprooted from everything you've ever known. He barked a lot (still does), but never had an accident in the house!  Good Boy!  He was very submissive to Rosie which was a good thing, because Rosie was definitely the Alpha bitch.
Flash was super-fast for a Basset Hound. He loved to go walkies, and he would run the entire way. Thankfully he never got away off leash, I don't think he could have been caught!
He's slowing down now, he doesn't run as fast, his walkies are a bit shorter sometimes. He's got arthritis in his back-end. He sleeps a lot more than he used to. But hey, he turned 15 years old in June 2005,what do you expect?!
