| WELCOME to Hooker..... My husband, Rick, and I moved to the Hooker area in 1994. We purchased our home from Sylvia Gors, a long-time Hooker resident. Three of the five homes are occupied. We are 3 miles east and two miles north of Viborg, SD. We enjoy living here as it is very peaceful. I hope you enjoy the information on this website. Please e-mail me with any changes or suggestions. | HISTORY The Town Lot Co. founded the town in 1894 and it was named after John Hooker, a pioneer settler in the area. Hooker was a main railroad shipping point between Chicago and Salt Lake City. Residents have many fond memories of the school, churches and dances and activities held in the community hall. The town struggled to survive through a tornado in the early 1900's and a fire years later. Two churches and a lumberyard flattened by the tornado were never rebuilt. But an even more devastating blow than the tornado and fire was the end of the railroad service. That was followed by the demise of the stockyards, grain elevator and remaining businesses. The 2007 population is 6 with 3 of the 5 homes occupied. |

| QUILT PIECES - NOVEMBER 1937 The quilt has been sewn by Mary Kay Smith from the 16 squares Norman Westra gave me.. Each piece has a ladies name embroidered on it. The following is a list of names: Ina Gors, Elsie Fetzner, Tillie Hendry, Jessie Temple, Caroline Hammond, Ruby Luden, Carrie Johnson, Minnie Gors, Mary Loe, Edith Smit, Esther Wrage, Ida Feekes, Harriet Nelson and Katie Hammond. It will be displayed at the Danish Heritage Museum in the Hooker, SD display. |
