About Your Host

A Short Background

Albert Gallatin was selected as the Fourth Secretary of the Treasury by President Thomas Jefferson in 1801. His tenure in this position continued until late 1813 when President James Madison asked that he join the delegation representing the United States in negotiations to end the War of 1812.

After his return from Ghent, Gallatin hoped to return to private life, but was tapped as Minister (Ambassador) for the United States to France. His next duties were as Minister Plenipotentiary to the Court of St. James in London.

Our "Swiss" Founding Father did return to private life where he led an active career in finance and education.
