State Flag of Bavaria
The flag is a blue-white lozengy of 21 pieces. Adopted as an
alternative on December 14, 1953. The number of lozenges is only
fixed to a minimum of 21 - including the cut ones. That means that
flags with more lozenges are correct. The shape of the lozenges is
not fixed by the law, but the (cut) lozenge in the upper corner has to
be a white one. The language in the state law reads: "The lozenge
flag includes at least twenty-one white and blue lozenges (rolls [i. e.
little breads]), including the lozenges cut by the edges. According
to the size and shape of the flags, the number of lozenges may be higher.
At any rate the upper right [i.e., hoist] corner of the flag should be
reserved for a cut white lozenge (cf. illustration of the smaller Bavarian
state arms)."

At the close of World War II, Allied troops generally found white flags

this was in Bavaria, where the old national bicolor flew from many houses.
After the war, it was usually used as the Bavarian flag, even before its
official adoption.
