After departing Kendall the RED line exits a tunnel portal and enters the center median of the Longfellow Bridge over the Charles River. This part of the line offers one of the best views on the entire MBTA system. Once crossing the bridge, on a very short piece of elevated trackage, is Charles-MGH (Mass. Take the footbridge over Storrow Drive to the Charles River side and go West along Storrow Drive. The MDC Hatch Shell is a short walk from here.Its a Large outdoor music shell for concerts, performances and other events.It is the stage for one of Boston's Independence Day institutions, the Boston Pops Fourth of July Concert and Fireworks Spectacular. A Boston summertime tradition, Free Friday Flicks takes place here at the Esplanade on the Charles River. Every Friday night for ten weeks people gather their families and friends, pitch a blanket, and watch recent-release and classic family films under the stars...Free!. The Esplanade is home to Community Boating, a sailing club offering rentals and lessons at very reasonable rates.
