     Freedom Train Locomotive Lionel� Train

The post-WWII Freedom Train carried the most important artifacts of American history to towns and cities across the country in an effort to rededicate citizens to the blessings of the American system. From 1947 to 1949, it received 3,521,841 visitors, who saw original documents such as the Declaration of Independence. The American Locomotive Company furnished the train's motive power. This was the legendary PA-1, co-built with General Electric. It was a highly visible example of the capability of diesel power and probably hastened the demise of steam locomotives. Although this twelvth-in-series authentic Lionel� Electric Trains detailed miniature die-cast-metal model locomotive has not to date been reproduced in "O" guage by Lionel� it features the prototypical colors and trim, and revolving wheels and axles, and can be used as a Christmas ornament or fits perfectly on N-gauge track. The post-WWII Freedom Train carried the most important artifacts of American history to towns and cities across the country in an effort to rededicate citizens to the blessings of the American system.      Union Pacific Veranda Turbine Locomotive Lionel� Train

As the famous behemouths of the steam era were retired, the Union Pacific continued to reach for higher horsepower and greater efficiency. The railroad experimented with powerful turbine locomotives. One design featured sheltered walkways along the sides, allowing train and maintenance crews easier access to the internal components. Because these locomotives appeared to have covered porches, the name of this new turbine class became obvious: Veranda. The powerful Verandas hauled freight until they were retired in the late 1960s. The turbine era on the Union Pacific began in 1948 with an experimental, one-of-a-kind locomotive. Other powerful turbine locomotives followed. They burned Bunker C fuel oil, a lower-cost alternative to diesel fuel. Inside the turbine engine, expanding gases were directed at the blades of the turbine, causing them to rotate and generate electricity for the traction motors. In 1941 when the first Southern Pacific GS-4 Daylight steam locomotive began her run, she was called "the most beautiful train in the world." By the time the Daylights were retired in 1956, the 4449 was given a permanent home in Portland, Oregon. Welcome to Lionellville�--the ultimate railroad town! Just move the levers on the miniature "transformer" and watch three classic Lionel� trains come to life--in either forward or reverse motion. The Blue Comet rounds a bend, passes by the operating crossing gate, then through a tunnel, while another train switches tracks across the way. The General Locomotive and freight train is parked on the Hellgate Bridge. Lights are aglow all over Lionelville�--from the Passenger Station to the windows of the Barber Shop to the massive Industrial Power Station overlooking the town. Press the Lionel� emblem on top of the "transformer" and you'll hear the conductor calling out "Lionelville! All Aboard!" follwed by the sounds of a steam locomotive pulling out of the station.
