Crossroads of Commerce Book Crossroads of Commerce: The Pennsylvania Railroad Calendar Art of Grif Teller    (SL)
Cupper, Dan. - Crossroads of Commerce: The Pennsylvania Railroad Calendar Art of Grif Teller. Richmond, VT: Great Eastern Publishing, c1992, p.184, illus., Photography by Ken Murry, 200-plus photos (150 in color), Large 9-inch by 12-inch format, cm. ISBN#: 0-9625602-1-9  New.

From K4, M1, S1 and J1 steam locomotives, to P5a and GG-1 electrics, to Baldwin shark-noses and EMD E7 and E8 diesels, this book gives lavish full-page display to every one of the 33 calendar paintings used by the Pennsylvania Railroad to advertise itself from 1925 to 1958.  The story of each painting is told through research, photographs and sketches, and interviews with Grif Teller and others.  Included is a biography of Grif Teller (1899-1993).  Also, the story of his second railroad-painting career when he began to accept commissions to paint PRR scenes in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s.  In addition to the stories about his artwork, the Osborne Printing Company (produced the calendars for PRR), and the PRR itself, this truly magnificent hardbound volume reveals many little-known and interesting facts about the artist (e.g. the pseudonym used by Grif Teller when signing commissioned art work while free-lancing during his tenure with the Pennsylvania Railroad). Originally published at 69.50 US, now retailing elsewhere at 62.50 US plus s&h. This book is out of print, and there is only a very limited supply available--and the price is right! A great gift idea! Spring Thaw Special Reduced Price: $44.50 only until March 31, 2004.

Van Allsburg, Chris  The Polar Express Boston, MA: Houghton Mifflin Co., 1985, p.30, illus. 30 pages of Color Photos and text, cm.  ISBN#: 0-395-38949-6  New.

One couldn't select a more delightful and exciting premise for a children's book than the tale of a young boy lying awake on Christmas Eve only to have Santa Claus sweep by and take him on a trip with other children to the North Pole. And one couldn't ask for a more talented artist and writer to tell the story than Chris Van Allsburg. Allsburg, a sculptor who entered the genre nonchalantly when he created a children's book as a diversion from his sculpting, won the 1986 Caldecott Medal for this book, one of several award winners he's produced. The Polar Express rings with vitality and wonder.

In The Traces: Railroad Paintings of Ted Rose In The Traces: Railroad Paintings of Ted Rose (Railroads Past and Present)
Rose, Ted and Garver, Thomas H. (Introduction)  In the Traces: Railroad Paintings of Ted Rose - Indiana University, IN:  Indiana University Press, September 2000, p.152, Illus. Color Photos, cm.  ISBN#: 0-2533-3769-0 Hardcover. New.

In The Traces presents sixty-one paintings by Ted Rose, with commentary by the artist. The works are an eloquent and absorbing view of industrial America, especially of railroads as an integral part of the manmade landscape. You'll find inside this beautiful hardcover book a rich narrative of a journey that began fifty years ago when Rose confronted changes everywhere during the time when railroads and the country were in transition. His paintings are a record of his continuing fascination with railroad places, a visual anthology of past and present. Ted Rose' masterful watercolors well describe the atmosphere and life along the rails during the last half of the twentieth century.
