When she took Iolaus to her fortress, she had a soldier named Theodorus try to kill Hercules. Theodorus was killed as she expected and Hercules followed her to bring her to justice. She told Iolaus that Hercules wasn't willing to let him have any glory hoping that Iolaus would kill Hercules when he showed up or at least weaken him sufficiently for her to do so. The plan failed and Iolaus and Hercules teamed up against her. Later on, Xena was having trouble with her second-in-command Darphus who was disobeying her orders and killing women and children. Xena saved a baby and Salmoneus from Darphus and he took this as a sign of her being weak. He led a mutiny against her and forced to run a gauntlet. She survived and decided to hunt down Hercules, hoping killing him would regain her men's loyalty. Hercules defeated her and convinced her that they should join forces against Darphus. They did so and then did so again when Ares raised Darphus from the dead. Hercules and Xena began to fall in love during this period and even Iolaus forgave the warrior princess after she saved his life. With Darphus destroyed once and for all, Xena decided to become a force for good permanently.
