Life is different now in Heppner than it was 100 years ago becausetheflood changed a lot in 1903 and many people died. The railroad andthemill closed down and a lot of people moved away because theycouldn'tfind jobs.
1. I think that people drive to Hermiston or the Tri-Cities toshopbecause Heppner dosen't have many places to shop and where there isitis expensive.
2. Heppner is smaller now because the mill closed and the flood
3. Technology advanced Heppner like everything else.
4. The population was more when the mill was open and a lot ofpeopledied in the flood so that dropped the population.
5. People move to Heppner to fish and hunt.
6. People move away from Heppner to go to bigger cities to find jobs.
7. The motel and the general store were main businesses before thefloodcame.
8. If Heppner would get more businesses more people would move heretowork.
9. Heppner has a huge St. Patricks Day celebration every year withamotor cross and a lot of other festivities

Right now in the town of Heppner things are a lot different thanwhatthey were 100 years ago. Some things that are different are that wenowhave electricity to use for radios, light and other importantthings. We also have cars now when back then they only had wagons andstufflike that.

1. People drive to Hermiston or Tri-Cities to shop because the townofHeppner doesn't have very many places to shop here and we can'talwaysfind what we need.
2. Heppner was bigger back then because it was before they had thefloodso they were more industrialized than we are today.
3. This question gets answered in the first question.
4. People move to Heppner because they can't get a job anywhere elsesothey come here where we accept anyone.
5. People move away because they get better jobs than what they cangethere.
6. I think we should get more stores that are big and we need somefastfood places too.
7. Well we celebrate St. Pat's Day all the time.

The town of Heppner has changed very muchsince the great flood. Because of the great flood the population of thetown lowered majorly. It took almost 100 years to return the populationback to its orginal 1500 from 1903. If the flood had never happened, the town of Heppner would be much bigger and probley would have no dam.But now here in 2007, heppner has changed very much because of new technology around the world. Although we have to drive to Hermistonor tricities because they have more varity like clothes shoping. Togrow the population of Heppner I think a new busness that will be bigacross Oregon needs to come into effect. That would bring work and morepeople to Heppner.

This picture was taken in 1903, it shows a growing town.

Here is Heppner now. Both picture had the same population.

Shopping in Heppner is very limited. We dont have many stores to shop in. The few stores that we do have dont offer many choices. But in bigger towns and cities they have many different stores that offer a variety of things and people dont have to travel very far to travel very far to get what they want or need. The choices we have in Heppner for shopping are very limited. We dont have a mall or a Wal-Mart or Costco nearby so that means that we need to travel to get what we need. People prefer to travel to get what hey need because usually we cant get it here in Heppner. We can have time to go shopping and experience new things that we dont get to do in Heppner. Like, for instance going to the mall or going to the movies and many other fun activities, In the end, the reasons I think that people prefer to shop outside of Heppner is because you can find more things and you get to experience new and fun things .

Why do people in Heppner drive to Hermiston or Tri-Cities to shop? The reason a lot of Heppner people go to either Hermiston or Tri-Cities is because Heppner only has a few stores and they're not clothes stores. Plus, Heppner Family Foods has horrible prices for food but its nice to need something and don't have to drive all the way back to Hermiston, you can just walk down to Heppner Family Foods. Hepper also has a nice floral store which contains espresso drinks, hot food, jewerly, cards, make-up and also holds a pharmacy there as well. Its a nice place to hang out and just relax. But if you have a big family and want to feed your kids, you would want to spend all your money at the grocery store in Heppner, you'd want to drive to Hermiston or Tri-Cities to go to Costco. Heppner also doesnt have any clothing stores so you'd have to go to Hermiston or Tri-Cities to some.

Heppner is a really nice town its just really out of the way if you want to get other stuff than provided. So for me, I'd probably live and raise my family in this community because I would never let one of my childeren go and walk around Hermiston or Tri-Cities. I can trust the people here! Its a great place to live!

Why Do People Drive Out of Town to Shop? I think that people leave town to do their grocery shopping because, we only have one grocery store in town. Prices are a lot lower in bigger towns because the stores get more business and don't have to have as high of prices as Family Foods. A lot of people go to Costco in Tri-Cities too because you can buy food in bulk there for less money than you can buy stuff at regular grocery stores. It would be better for our economy if more people would shop here in town instead of Pendleton or Hermiston but I don't think that that's going to happen. Heppner is just to small. When the mill shut down, that really hurt us because so many people worked there. We lost a lot of people because they lost their jobs
