bill joy (computer-scientist and critic) : why the future doesnt need us.

bill joy is one of the leading researchers and founders of the computergigant SUN. he put words to a worry from many people, when he in 1999 wrote his article in WIRED magazine, and raise the question if the technology will make the human being abandonned in the future.

bill joys essay started big debat about, the serious riscs, that the technologies of the future, can have as a consquence. since that a number of conferences has taken the issue up, and joys essay has been translated into many lanquages. the essay has been brought in its whole in the danish newspaper information weekend 24-25. juni 1999, side 14-15.

a short comment inspired by the critical articel by bill joy
about the technical digital delvelopment :

in till reasontly the computers capacity to - think - has been none-exsisting. but molecular electronics and nano-technologies, have done it probable, that we in the next 30 years, will have computer-power on the human brain level.

how big are the chances then, that we still is ourselves, or human beings at all.

some of the planets civilisations keeps an overview over the situation, and limits, what it is technical allowed to do. they get safely through a risc-full period of years.

other civilisations do not limit the technical development by ethics and laws. these civilisations will perish.

we must limit the devlopment of technologies, that are too dangerous for us.

in these years, a pandora-box opens, and when we have opened it, we cannot close it again.

one ought to make ethical rules, that one has to respect in the community. one might be inspred by the dalai lamas book - ethics for the millenium - .

but it is not enough with ethical rules. a concrete new law-complex must follow. as for instans with the law about human cloning.

unfortunatly it seems that many people with knowledge about the threats, are remarkable silent.

therefor the future do not need us :
if we do not realize, that our blind faith in digital technic, are the biggest threat in our century. then the technology will take over power and deal with the human being.

About the DELCA project

The DELCA project involves the design of intelligent creatures known as ghosts. The DELCA ghosts are highly emotional creatures, which can assist and entertain you in variety of ways. Some ghosts can guide you around in the buildings, find specific locations etc. Other ghosts can play or generate music upon requests. Some ghosts can monitor and surveil your car, while others can help you solve problems with computers such as finding right printers or entertain you with games.

The DELCA project has been launched to investigate new ways of obtaining high quality location based personal assistance with less information processing requirements. The main part of the DELCA ghosts consists of audio. The ghosts are able to express themselves by using advanced speech synthesis and users will be able to communicate fluently with the ghosts. The ghosts can contact users through mobile phones, PDA, portable/stationary computers.

DELCA stands for "DisEmbodied Location-specific Conversational Agents". The term "Disembodied" refers to the fact that ghosts are not physical creatures and not necessarily confounded to rules of physics. Ghosts are "Location-specific" because they can monitor the indoor location of users. The term "Conversational" describes their ability to verbally communicate and have natural dialogues with users. The "Agent" term refers to the relationship between ghosts as assisting entities and users in need of assistance. It is important to recognize that the ghosts (agents) are both informative/functional and entertaining entities.
