| As American raised citizens, our initial thought as we look at this picture is one of oppression. Women in the middle East are often protrayed as deprived of human rights, and forced to wear the scarves called burqas. But in reality, while they do have wishes for change, getting rid of their burqas is not one of them. Even our First Lady, Laura Bush, has made the wrong assumption about Afghan women's worries. An article written by the Christian Science Monitor states, 'Hariri complains about first lady Laura Bush's radio address last month on Afghan women, arguing that it was meant to provide the US with an excuse to keep bombing. "It's not for women in the US to say Afghan women are oppressed and should take off the veil," she says. "If an Afghan woman is upset about her situation, she should change it, not you." ' We cannot always assume that we know what another country wants, or needs. Especially when we have so many problems here, but we continue to ask them to change their way of life. How does that seem even close to being right? |
