HISTORY OF HOPE:
My first thought of starting HOPE came to me my sophomore year of high school, in my English class to be precise. We were told to do a research project regarding different social mores of the world (ie- environment, poverty, energy, etc.). I chose poverty, African poverty. Overwhelmed by the graphic photos I saw, I was set on trying to fix this problem, even though I had finished with the actual schoolwork. However, life intervined and my determination was put on hold. Then, during the difficulty of choosing the topic of my senior year independent study, that determination came back to me in a flash. I decided to create HOPE, a community service-based high school organization that is based in the theory that students need to learn, talk about, and take positive action in the national and global issues that surround us. Throughout the year we had many successful projects, and our ideas grew. Our causes have branched out, and our focus has been to promote partnerships within the nonprofit community, so many different organizations can work together to decrease the issues that affects all of us. Furthermore, we have discussed the possibility of becoming a nonprofit organization, starting a homeless shelter, and the eventuality of traveling internationally to aid those who need HOPE.
