The subjunctive mood is always used right after embora (although), mesmo que (even though) and ainda que (even though) in the subordinating clause. Embora ele seja um bom aluno, ele não passou no teste. Although he's a good student, he hasn't passed the test.
Não vou mais falar com você, mesmo que você se desculpe. I won't talk to you ever again, even though you apologize.
Não vou ajudá-lo, ainda que ele tenha me dito a verdade. I won't help him, even though he has told me the truth.

The subjunctive mood is always used right after quando (when), assim que (as soon as), depois que (after) and antes que (before) in the subordinating clause. Eu comprarei um carro novo quando tiver dinheiro. I'll buy a new car when I have money.
Eu disse que compraria um carro novo assim que tivesse dinheiro. I said I would buy a car as soon as I had money.
Eu prometi que lhe emprestaria mais dinheiro depois que ele tivesse saldado suas dívidas. I promised that I would lend him some more money after he had paid off his debts.
