The subjunctive mood is always used right after como se (as if, as though, like) in the subordinating clause. Ele age como se fosse muito esperto. He acts as though he were really smart.
Ele agiu como se tivesse sido enganado. He acted as if he had been deceived.

The tenses of the subjunctive mood are used in the following types of adverb clauses:

  • conditional clauses;

  • contrast clauses;

  • time clauses;

  • modal clauses.
