quanto tempo você mora no Brasil?

Moro aqui vinte anos.

Moro aqui desde 1985.

 

How long have you been living in Brazil?

I've been living here for twenty years.

I've been living here since 1985.

Questions that refer to actions and states that started in the past and that continue into the present.

 

is a form of verb haver

 

(Por) quanto tempo você morou lá?

Morei lá por quinze anos.

Morei lá de 1990 a 1995.

 

(For) How long did you live there?

I lived there for fifteen years.

I lived there from 1990 to 1995.

Questions that refer to finished past actions and states.
 

De quem é esse carro?

 

De quem são esses carros?

 

 

Whose car is that?

 

Whose cars are those?

 

 

Questions about possession with verb

 ser

=

to be

 

De quem + é + singular noun

 

De quem + são + plural noun

 

 

A quem pertence esse carro?

A quem pertencem esses carros?

 

Who does that car belong to?

Who do those cars belong to?

 

Questions about possession with verb

 pertencer a

=

 to belong to

 

A quem + pertence + singular noun

 

A quem + pertencem + plural noun

 

Question with verb pertencer sound more formal than the ones with verb ser.

 

Questions made with how-compounds in English  are very different in Portuguese:
Qual (é) a largura da mesa? How wide is the table?
Qual (é) a altura do prédio? How tall is the building?
Qual (é) a profundidade do rio? How deep is the river?
Qual (é) o comprimento do rio? How long is the river?
Qual (é) a altura da pirâmide? How high is the pyramid?
