Go that extra mile and be absolutely certain your short or feature film is as good as it can possibly be before you enter a contest or submit a reel to agents and producers. There is no substitute for professional advice and production feedback.
For a new producer/director, breaking into the motion picture industry is never an easy task. Some submit films to contests and festivals in the hope they'll gain much needed exposure. Others query and submit their reels directly to agents and producers. Whether you choose the competitions/movie contests route, or submit your film(s) to agents and producers directly, you only get ONE chance.
If you're serious about the business of filmmaking, get professional advice and production notes BEFORE you send off that film on which you've worked so hard.
As you'll see on the “My Experience” portion of this page, I'm an experienced producer/director and festival judge. After seeing thousands of films, I do know where new filmmakers come up short and I'm ready and willing to help.
As part of my production advice service, you'll receive extensive notes on such things as screenplay, acting, editing, cinematography, sound design, format and production value. If you beat me to the punch by providing a full pre-production package BEFORE you begin your filming, I can provide expert advice and analysis on how to maximize your value based upon your budget.
I made my first short film in 1987 at age 19. Since then, I've made 27 short films (three of which have won major awards) and 2 features. I have 2 more features currently in development, and a bevy of independent films on the slate from recent film school graduates. As you can imagine, much of the time at Hector's Spite Productions is spent reviewing pre-production packages just like yours for financing consideration. We also have a hands-on approach with the films that come through, making sure our name is associated only with the highest quality product.
Since 1990 I've worked every year as the top judge for perhaps the most respected film festival in the industry (the National Educational Computing Conference Student Film Showcase), and also as a judge for many other highly respected competitions.
After many years of such work, I know the subject of independent production backwards and forwards, and every year I assist hundreds of filmmakers in their efforts to achieve their professional goals.
And yes, I have critiqued and provided notes to filmmakers who eventually got grip jobs or won contests. I also on occasion, and with the permission of the filmmaker, pass shorts on to industry professionals with whom I have working relationships.
Perhaps the greatest strength of the services provided by Hector's Spite Productions are the fact that not only is its founder, Vance Sloane, a supremely talented filmmaker who can manage stress and budgets with equal finesse, but the fact that on the rare occasions where something crops up that Sloane feels he cannot handle himself, he has a most capable team of working professionals on his staff at all times.
G. F., Former Director, National Educational Computing Conference Short Film Showcase.
I was at first reluctant to spend so much money for questionable services, but I'm so glad I did! I haven't gotten representation or industry employment (yet!!), but thanks to Hector's Spite Productions, my short film ... was a quarterfinalist in the 2003 West Tulsa-Sand Springs Independent Film Festival!

I sent Hector's Spite Productions a short film I had slaved over for years. They ripped it a part and basically tore me a new one for even thinking this would be a good idea. At first I was angry, but I have to say, as I kept getting rejected by festival committees, as I kept rewatching it and trying to tweak the editing--I realized every word Hector's Spite had said to me was dead on the money. Sure, they're hostile and they seem to get off on making everyone around them feel inferior, but you know what? Compared to them, everyone is inferior. When I took their advice, I got accepted in the Gudger College Fall Semester Film Tech II Exhibition!

I didn't take it seriously when one of my friends suggested I register for the PitchWire™ service. I thought, "Shit, I can just go to pitchfests or use virtualpitchfest.com or something. Well, I tried that and got no responses. So I thought, "What the hell?" and uploaded my three-minute pitch and screenplay to their database. Maybe they don't have as many industry insiders as VPF, and maybe they don't have as many people pitching, but to me those are advantages. Within days, I had five producers reading my screenplay, and within a year it had sold for $1500!! Thanks, Hector's Spite Productions.

These guys are great!!!

I tried to make a feature-length gay-themed comedy, but something was just...off. I couldn't put my finger on what, but the jokes didn't quite seem as funny as they had on the page (or even while shooting). It took the geniuses at Hector's Spite Productions to figure it out: pacing problems. Certain shots hung on for too long, some cut too fast, but overall, the editing was the big problem. We went back into the editing room and saved the picture!

I've never met anybody quite like Vance Sloane. His people skills may leave a bit to be desired, but he knows what he's talking about, he knows how to motivate, and he understands film better than most. He's worth it!

For me, titles are a pain in the ass. I had a 45-minute short that I thought was great, but I simply couldn't think of a decent, marketable title. When I took advantage of Title Professor™, it rocked my world, changed my life, and suddenly I found myself getting into every festival on the planet. Thanks, guys! "The Raging Night" sure is a better title than "Sextronic Rocket Society"!!

I spent hours on the phone with Vance Sloane and/or Mary Keller, trying to hash out the problems with my pre-production package after their initial written consultation. They were blunt but patient, angry but knowing, and my package went from something a dog would piss on to becoming something that attracted $500,000 in financing. Hector's Spite Productions rules!

I don't have a camcorder or any other reasonable way of shooting my pitch, so I took Hector's Spite Productions up on their offer to have it filmed by successful Manhattan fashion photographer Stu Feinberg. After booking and paying for a round-trip flight to New York, along with a week-long hotel stay, I wasn't sure it would be worth all the money I had spent. Boy was I wrong! Stu Feinberg is a consummate professional, and the video he did looks great! I thought they said the camera was supposed to add ten pounds, but I look way thinner than I do in real life! And he relaxed me enough so I'm way more articulate and less flustered than I usually am. Great experience, and well worth the $2500 I spent on airfare, hotels, and taxis!
