I have several ideas about walls. All are inexpensive if you have any creativity in you.
We often forget walls and just think "I'll put a few paintings and that's it". Last year when we repainted the kids room, we had my two nieces help us. They are 6 and 4 years old. And they like drawing on the walls more then anything. So, we've let them dip their hands in different paint and they were putting their hand prints all over the walls. The base paint was yellow, and the hand prints were green, red, blue any kind of stronger color. So the adults got some time off, kids got entertained and the room got repainted!
Another way you can decorate the wall is by making a real drawing with colored chalks. My sister had drawn a huge unicorn across the entire wall and it stayed there for years. The chalk didn't wear out. It looked really amazing and I'm still sorry I didn't take a picture of that wall before we made the roof adjustments.
If you're crazy about puzzles then this is right for you. Buy one of those big puzzles and assemble it. Then glue it to a panel and put it on the wall, it'll be wonderful and you'll have something to do in your spare time. Another tip: don't be amazed when suddenly all of your guests start to look for the pieces instead of talking to you. I usually loose my patience with puzzles after 15 minutes but mine was done in days thanks to all of the people who were visiting me :)
