Hawks Prevail in Penalty-Plagued Performance, 4-2
              October 1, 2005
Taking fifteen penalties and handing their opponents four separate two-man advantages is probably not what Coach Hal Nunn was looking for in the Santa Clara Blackhawks preseason opener Saturday.  And while his squad eventually prevailed on the scoreboard by a 4-2 margin, the coach will be riding the pine next week to pay for his team's sin bin sins.  The more talented Blackhawks team overcame the obstacles, killing ten of eleven penalties, including all four 3-on-5 shorthanded situations to gain the victory.  Leading the way was last year's scoring leader, Patrick Castagna, who got off to a blistering start, registering a hat trick and scoring the game winner.  Santa Clara's other goal was tallied by Jeremy Mamon, one of four Blackhawks who did not make the End of Summer Hockey Fest Tournament and who were seeing their first action of the year.  Vitto Gagliardi assisted on all three of Castagna's goals to earn the playmaker, and Brandon Shore added two assists of his own.  Lone helpers were recorded by Jason Pacheco and Kevin Brown.  In spite of all the shorthanded time, Santa Clara amassed 46 total shots, but solid goaltending by the Bears kept them in the contest well into the third period.  Santa Clara goaltender Devon Luna did his job between the pipes, stopping 20 of 22 shots to earn the win.

Fired-up Sharks Take a Bite out of Blackhawks, 3-2
              October 9, 2005
With some spotty play to open the preseason, the San Jose Jr. Sharks had something to prove this morning in a match-up pitting the defending State (CAHA) and northern California (NORCAL) Midget-A champions.  The State champion Blackhawks got the early jump in the contest when Patrick Castagna ripped one into the top corner of the net to give Santa Clara a 1-0 lead at 8:10 of the opening period.  Castagna scored from the right slot after taking a pass into the zone from Brian Quirolo.  But when the Hawks took a 5:00 major penalty at 5:26, the team's offensive momentum fizzled while they went into penalty-kill mode.  To make matters worse, Santa Clara was down to ten skaters, after a game misconduct penalty and an injury further shortened what was an already short bench.  Though they failed to capitalize on the extended power play opportunity, the Jr. Sharks came out of the period trailing by only one goal, and that provided the spark for a second period dominated by the finned fish.  San Jose tied the game on a slapshot through traffic at 10:23 of the second period, and then they took the lead when they converted on a 5-on-3 power play at 7:27.

The third period was a wild affair, with San Jose generating 17 shots to the Hawks' 16.  Santa Clara knotted the game at 2-2 at 13:02 when Jason Pacheco took a pass from Phillip Wong that glanced off the skate of Jeremy Mamon, and then slid into the left slot before burying a top shelf wrister.  The score stayed that way until the final minute of play,  Along the way, both teams had several scoring chances denied by heads-up goaltending.  The Blackhawks best chance was an open shot from just outside the crease by Phillip WongSam Boyer then rejected an undefended San Jose shot from point-blank range just seconds later.  With less than thirty seconds to play, a blind Santa Clara clearing attempt dropped right onto the stick of an undefended trailer who was moving into the Hawks' zone.  The two defensive lapses cost the Hawks dearly when the Sharks' skater grabbed the bait, skated in, and then took a bite out of the back of the net with just twenty-one seconds to play.  The energized Jr. Sharks erupted in celebration with a win that certainly boosts the confidence of the Hawks' top rival.

Santa Clara's preseason continues next weekend with tough games against the 3-0-0 California Cougars and the 2-0-1 Tri-Valley Blue Devils.

Blackhawks Blank Cougars in Close One, 1-0
         October 15, 2005
Offense may be on center stage in the NHL, but today's contest between the California Cougars and the Santa Clara Blackhawks was old-fashioned, 1-0 goaltender standoff.  The Blackhawks' Devon Luna came out on top in this one, standing on his head to make 37 saves to nail down the team's first shutout of the year.  Luna was solid throughout, but never more so than during an early second period sequence when he made three saves during a short stint, including a partial breakaway rejection that capped off the flurry.  Luna also registered a lights-out save on a shorthanded breakaway late in the period, just a minute or so before Jason Pacheco scored the only goal of the game, a sizzler from just inside the left faceoff circle at 1:17.  A good sequence of passes set up the goal and earned assists for Brandon Shore and Vitto Gagliardi.  Santa Clara held the Cougars in check in the final period, despite allowing eleven more shots on goal.  Solid defense down the stretch prevented the Cougars from pulling their goaltender in favor of an extra skater, and the Hawks hung on for the win.

Hawks Squander 3-1 Cushion to Lose Late Again, 4-3
              October 16, 2005
For the second time in three games, the Santa Clara Blackhawks gave up a third-period lead and lost a game in the final minute of play.  If one game could be considered a tougher loss than the other, this would probably be it.  Santa Clara built a 3-1 lead on the strength of goals from Patrick Castagna, Jeremy Mamon and Jason Pacheco.  The Hawks' lead held until 10:35 of the final period when the Blue Devils scored to narrow the gap to 3-2.  The Devils then added a power play goal, their second of the game, at 8:30, to tie it up at 3-3.  Tri-Valley seized the momentum and then outplayed the Santa Clarans down the stretch, striking for the kill on a score off a turnover with just 49 seconds to play.

Santa Clara's three goal scorers were joined on the scoresheet by Anthony Dragotto who notched two assists, and by Dustin Holt, Brandon Shore, and Nick Lavarias, who each tallied a lone helper.  Sam Boyer was again snake-bit in the loss.  Boyer registered 23 saves on 27 shots for the contest, but was left out to dry on the game-winner.

Energetic Exhibition Affair ends up in 2-2 Tie
              October 30, 2005
Having played their first regular season game last weekend, the Blackhawks had to go back to training camp this weekend in their exhibition match against the San Jose Jr. Sharks.  That might have been a cause for concern for both clubs.  But these two teams seem to have no trouble getting up for each other and the result was a fast, furious, hard-hitting game that ended up in a 2-2 tie.  Energy aside, the final result was frustrating for the Blackhawks, who clanked a few shots off the posts on their way to outshooting the Jr. Sharks 35-19.  Santa Clara also had an apparent goal waived off by the officials after a quick whistle, and they failed to convert on a two-man advantage in the last 1:36 of the game.  But on the positive side, the defense was generally solid throughout and the forwards were forechecking with authority in the teams' most physical performance of the year.  The Blackhawks' penalty-kill unit was on top of its game today, stopping all four San Jose power plays, led by the efforts of Brandon Shore and Nick LavariasDevon Luna stopped 17 of 19 shots to earn the tie between the pipes.

Santa Clara rallied from deficits of 1-0 and 2-1 in this contest. Patrick Castagna scored the team's first goal, grabbing the rebound off a shot by Kevin Brown, and then alertly lifting it up and over the goaltender's legpads from point-blank range.  Brandon Shore also earned an assist on the play, his fourth straight game with at least one assist.  San Jose regained the lead when a skater found an open lane in the middle of the ice, walking in to deliver the twine-twister at 7:18 of the third period.  The Blackhawks then tied it back up just eight seconds later on a play that was made possible by the Blackhawks' tenacious forechecking.  Phillip Wong chased down a Sharks' defenseman who barely had time to get off a pass before being drilled by Wong.  The result was a weak pass that Mitch Venosta intercepted near the left faceoff dot.  Venosta went top shelf with a hard wrister that glanced off the goaltender's facemask and connected with the top corner of the net.  With the game knotted up, the Blackhawks continued to dominate the third period, and when San Jose picked up two minor penalties with 1:36 left to play, their chances looked good.  But San Jose was able to ice the puck once, and then Santa Clara shot themselves in the foot with an icing call of their own with less than thirty seconds left to play.

The Blackhawks return to action next Sunday night in game against the Santa Rosa Flyers.

Third Period Breakdown Plagues Hawks Again
             November 13, 2005
Having worked hard to score four goals in the second period to take a 5-3 lead over the San Jose Jr. Sharks 16U AAA team, the Santa Clara Blackhawks were once again unable to hang on and preserve the win.  San Jose rallied for goals at 10:50, 6:26, and 4:48 of the final period to battle back and snatch victory from the hands of defeat.  Fortunately for the Blackhawks, it's another L that really doesn't matter in the NORCAL standings, where they are still undefeated at 2-0-0 headed into next weekend's pivotal contest against San Jose's 18U A team.

Santa Clara scored once in the opening period on sharp-angle shot through traffic by Kevin BrownJeremy Mamon and Patrick Castagna assisted on the play.  But San Jose led at the close of the period by a 2-1 score.  In the second period, Patrick Castagna evened the tally at 2-2 on a shot that he whisked over the goaltender's blocker at 13:45.  After San Jose regained the lead by a 3-2 margin, the Blackhawks caught fire and reeled of three straight goals. Nick Costa scored on a two-on-one at 11:22 off a great feed from Phillip Wong. Mitch Venosta started the play with a nice breakout pass off the side boards.  Vitto Gagliardi then gave Santa Clara the lead at 1:42 while the teams were playing four-on-four hockey.  San Jose won a face-off in the neutral zone, but Gagliardi busted right into the play and grabbed the disk, getting behind the defense before they new what hit them, and scoring on the unassisted breakaway.  The Blackhawks then went on a power play at 1:52 and Brandon Shore and Patrick Castagna worked a sweet give and go with Shore grabbing the return pass from Castagna before feeding it to a pinching Kevin Brown. Brown's shot was saved, but Shore was right there for the put-back goal at 0:53.

The third period belonged to San Jose.  After they narrowed the gap to 5-4 on what was effectively a shorthanded goal, the game's intensity picked up and spilled over during a scrum behind the Blackhawks' net that resulted in ten separate double-minor roughing penalties at 8:17.  San Jose then tied the game on a power play goal at 6:26, and they won it at 4:48 when they broke out of their zone on an odd-man rush and then penetrated the Blackhawks zone to score before any of the Hawks' forwards were able to get back into the play to help their defensemen.  The Jr. Sharks then did what Santa Clara was unable to do, and that is preserve their third-period lead and claim victory.

Next weekend's contest against San Jose will be a battle for first place, with San Jose improving to 3-1-0 with their 2-1 win over Tri-Valley this weekend.
