Hawks Burn Sun Devils, 3-1 in AA Tournament Opener
September 2, 2005The two-time, defending NORCAL Champion Santa Clara Blackhawks got their first taste of competition in preparation for the 2005-06 season, and they picked up right where they left off, with a 3-1 victory over the Huntington Beach Sun Devils #2 team at the End of Summer Hockey Fest played in Lakewood, California. Santa Clara is competing in the AA division in this tournament and they played well against another squad that may be playing up a level. Last year's scoring leader, Patrick Castagna, didn't miss a beat over the summer, picking up where he left off by notching the Blackhawks' first goal of the season. Tournament player Kevin Arabejo and Midget-A newcomer Jason Pacheco also tallied goals for the Blackhawks. Arabejo and Anthony Dragotto each recorded an assist and came away with +3 plus/minus ratings. Veteran Blackhawks netminder Devon Luna was on top of his game in the net, recording 17 saves on 18 shots to pick up the win.

September 3, 2005The Santa Clara Blackhawks exploded for five, third-period goals to outslug the Jr. Ice Dogs 9-4, and moved to 2-0-0 at the End of Summer Hockey Fest in Lakewood, California. After the Ice Dogs opened up the scoring on a shorthanded goal at 14:25 of the opening period, Santa Clara came back on two goals from Kevin Arabejo and one from Patrick Castagna, to close out the third period with a 3-2 advantage. Kevin Arabejo also completed a hat trick in the contest. Mitch Venosta and Anthony Dragotto each recorded playmakers with three assists apiece in the game. Other assists were credited to Pacheco, Arabejo, Costa, Castagna (two), Brandon Shore (two), Vitto Gagliardi, and Kevin Brown. Sam Boyer picked up his first win as a Midget-A goalie, recording 17 saves along the way. The Blackhawks will be back on the ice tonight in a contest which will likely determine the Tournament champions, when they face off against the Huntington Beach Sun Devils' #1 team.

Sun Devils' A-Team Schools, Blanks Hawks, 6-0
September 3, 2005After opening the End of Summer Hockey Fest Tournament with back-to-back wins, the Santa Clara Blackhawks were schooled on the art of AA hockey by and impressive squad from Huntington Beach on Saturday night, by a 6-0 score. This Sun Devils team may actually play AAA this season, which goes a long way in explaining the Blackhawks' punchless production. Huntington Beach jumped on the Hawks early, scoring twice in the first five minutes and four times in the opening period, to put this game away. Goaltender Devon Luna faced an onslaught of 34 shots, making several impressive stops in a 29-save performance. Santa Clara will next meet the talented Ventura Mariners AA squad in what will likely be a battle for second place in the tournament.

Hawks Take Second in Tourney after Sinking Mariners
September 4, 2005For the second time it the End of Summer Hockey Fest Tournament, the Santa Clara Blackhawks turned up the gas in the third period to pull away from their competition.
