Santa Clara Mauls Bears in Offensive Showcase, 11-2
              October 22, 2005
Over the last two years, the Santa Clara Blackhawks Midget-A squad has come to reply on the leadership, face-off dominance, and scoring touch of Captain Patrick Castagna.  So much so that team has not responded well in those rare occasions that Castagna hasn't been able to lace them up.  So, when the Blackhawks faced that prospect in their regular season opener against the defending regular season NORCAL-champion Oakland Bears, there had to be concern around the locker room, especially after some sub par performances of late.  But not only did the 2006-06 version of the Blackhawks respond to the challenge, but they did so from top to bottom in the line-up and in crushing fashion.  Nine different players scored goals for Santa Clara en route to a 11-2 highlight-reel blowout of the Bears. Although Oakland was missing their #1 netminder, none of the Blackhawks' goals were cheap.  Breakaway scores came off of some sweet finishing moves by Jeremy Mamon, Anthony Dragotto, Nick Lavarias and Jason Pacheco.  One-timers and snapshots were nailed to the corners by Nick Costa (two), Vitto Gagliardi, Phillip Wong, and Mitch Venosta.  And slapshots were sizzled through traffic off the sticks of Lavarias and Dustin Holt.  In the end, these Blackhawks demonstrated that they have scoring talent three lines deep, something that the coaches have been looking for and expect from this talented squad.  In fact, every forward line dominated play, and none were any more dominant that the trio of Mitch Venosta (1 goal, 2 assists), Nick Costa (2 goals, 1 assist), and Billy Kiernan (2 assists).

Two different Santa Clara skaters registered four-point games.  Leading the charge were forwards Vitto Gagliardi (1 goal, 3 assists) and Brandon Shore (4 assists).  Two-goal, three-point performances were turned in by Nick Lavarias and Nick Costa (2 goals, 1 assist apiece). Lavarias's two goals and the lamp-lighter by Dustin Holt were the first goals from defensemen in nine games.  Defensively, the Blackhawks swarmed to the puck from start to finish, creating numerous turnovers that led to scores.  Oakland managed only sixteen shots, half of which came in the third period, after the outcome was long decided. Devon Luna earned his first victory of the regular season between the pipes, making 14 saves on 16 shots.  After allowing a power play goal in the first period, and a breakaway goal in the second, Luna was perfect the rest of the way.  His biggest save of the game came at 1:24 of the second period when he sprawled out to deny a Bears' skater on a cherry-pick breakaway.

Another Double-Figure Domination as Hawks Clip Flyers
             November 6, 2005
The Santa Clara Blackhawks thanked their hosts, the Santa Rosa Flyers, for their Sunday night hospitality with a 10-1 thank you card that clearly demonstrated the Hawks' appreciation for the Flyers' 7:00 PM ice slot.  Forward Patrick Castagna was particularly gracious with his donation of five pucks into the back of the Santa Rosa net.  Kevin Brown was nearly as expressive in his appreciation for the four-hour round trip commute, delivering a package of two goals and three assists to the front porch of Snoopy's dog house.  But the gratitude did not stop there. Phillip Wong contributed a playmaker, and multiple-point games were also turned in by Nick Costa (1 goal, 1 assist) and Anthony Dragotto (2 assists). Jeremy Mamon and Jason Pacheco also scored goals for the Blackhawks, and single assists were recorded by Vitto Gagliardi, Derek Fredericks, Nick Lavarias, Brian Quirolo, Brandon Shore and Mitch Venosta.  Finally, goaltender Sam Boyer sent well-wishes of his own to the Santa Rosans by not allowing them go home empty handed. Boyer allowed one goal on 19 shots to pick up his first win of the regular season.

Santa Clara has a bye in NORCAL play next weekend, but will face a very formidable foe in an exhibition game next Sunday.  The talented, San Jose Jr. Sharks 16U AAA team, will face off against the Blackhawks in a 10:45 start.  The Sharks' 16U AAA squad has already posted wins over the California Cougars' 18U (4-2), as well as the California Gold Rush 18U AA team, (7-1), on the way to compiling a 13-6-4 overall record.

Great Hockey Game Goes Hawks' Way, 3-2
             November 20, 2005
From the first drop of the puck to the final buzzer, today's battle between the Santa Clara Blackhawks and the San Jose Jr. Sharks was a tense, exciting affair that went down to the wire.  This time it was the Blackhawks who ended up on top, squeaking out a 3-2 win.  These two teams have now met three times, with each team having won a 3-2 decision and with the other game ending up in a 2-2 tie.  Santa Clara picked the right game to win - the first of three regular season meetings between these two arch-rivals.  The Blackhawks' play was solid at both ends of the ice and between the pipes, where goaltender Devon Luna was on top of his game stopping 25 of the 27 shots he faced.

Neither team was able to score in a first period that included one power play for each team.  The Blackhawks carried the action however, outshooting the Jr. Sharks in the opening stanza by a 10-4 margin.  Santa Clara got on the board first when Patrick Castagna tucked his own rebound past the Sharks' goalie at 8:45 of the second period.  Defenseman Nick Lavarias got the play started in his own by kicking the puck out of traffic and ahead to Brandon ShoreShore's soft-touch pass off the boards led Castagna just right and he was off to the races, delivering a wrist shot that produced a fat rebound right back at him.  San Jose tied the game on a howitzer of a slapshot while on the power play at 1:38.  With the score tied 1-1, the Blackhawks came right back to score two goals in thirty-six seconds.  First, Nick Costa collected a cross-ice pass down low from Phillip Wong that he one-timed past the goalie at 0:25.  Kyle Yedlicka, playing his first game of the year after returning from an injury, picked up the second assist on Costa's goal.  Lightning struck twice for the Blackhawks when they lit the lamp again to open the third period.  Patrick Castagna won the the face-off at center ice back to Robert Kotval, who sent a sweet pass off the boards ahead to Vitto GagliardiGagliardi rushed in down the right side of the ice, feeding the biscuit cross-ice to Brandon Shore who put the wood on it a, twisting the twine at 14:49.  San Jose managed to narrow the gap to 3-2 at 7:24, but Santa Clara's defense clamped down on the Sharks the rest of the way to preserve the win.

The Blackhawks next travel to San Diego to play in the Midget-AA Division of the 6th Annual Thanksgiving Celebration.  They return to NORCAL action the weekend of December 3-4 with rematches against Oakland and Santa Rosa.

Stingy Blackhawks Play Keep Away From Bears, 3-0
             December 3, 2005
The Santa Clara Blackhawks knew that they would be facing a different Oakland Bears team than the one they thrashed 11-2 in the regular season opener, and fortunately for the Hawks, they rose to the occasion.  Oakland delivered outstanding goaltending from their #1 netminder, but it wasn't enough to overcome the offensive talent, defensive grit, and perfect netminding of the Blackhawks in a tight, 3-0 game.  Santa Clara scored one goal in each period to put this one in the win column.  Defenseman Billy Kiernan got the Blackhawks on the board first with a one-timer slapshot from the point at 3:51 of the opening period.  One of the Bears' defenders set a perfect screen for Kiernan on a shot that the goaltender never saw.  Patrick Castagna and Jason Pacheco picked up the assists on the play.

The score remained 1-0 until the Hawks were able to add a power play goal with just six seconds left in the second period.  Controlling the puck in the Oakland zone, defenseman Dustin Holt sent a nice touch pass off the side boards to Jeremy Mamon, who spotted Nick Costa moving through the middle.  Costa collected the pass and waited for the goaltender to commit, before moving to the backhand to sneak one past him.  The Blackhawks added their third and final goal at 5:54 of the third period.  Anthony Dragotto hit Vitto Gagliardi with a sweet lead pass into the Bears' zone and Gagliardi moved down the middle of the ice with a chasing defender fiercely hooking at him from behind.  Gagliardi ripped off a close-range slapshot just as one final hook caused him to leave his feet.  But it was too late for the Bears - Gagliardi's shot zipped into the back of the net to account for the final score.

Goaltender Devon Luna posted another stellar performance between the pipes.  He stopped all nine shots he faced in the opening period, when Oakland was at their best offensively, and all nineteen shots he faced in the game. Luna's performance included two tough saves on open chances right in front of his own net in the final period.

With the win, Santa Clara improves to 4-0-0 in NORCAL play and will be looking to improve to 5-0-0 when they face the last place Santa Rosa Flyers at home tomorrow.

Hawks Rack up 52 Shots in 8-3 Rout of Flyers
             December 4, 2005
The Santa Clara Blackhawks put on an offensive clinic today in their 8-3 victory over the Santa Rosa Flyers.  While the team was not able to bust into double-figures in the goal column, their 52 shots were the most they have recorded this season.  Leading the charge today was Anthony Dragotto, who was wearing Devon Luna's oversized goaltender's jersey after forgetting his own sweater.  But it didn't seem to slow the speedster a bit, as he netted a hat trick and registered five points for the game.  Dragotto connected on a semi-wraparound goal on the power play to give Santa Clara the lead for good, 2-1, at 9:40 of the first period.  He then made it 3-1 on a blistering slapshot at 6:04.  Dragotto's hat trick goal came at 7:46 of the third period when he redirected a Robert Kotval shot into the back of the net.  Red hot Nick Costa scored two goals in the contest, on his way to a three-point performance, and lone goals were recorded by Jeremy Mamon, Patrick Castagna, and Billy KiernanCastagna and defenseman Nick Lavarias each had two assists in the game.  All told, Santa Clara's defensemen contributed six assists, with Derek Fredericks, Brian Quirolo, Kevin Brown, and Robert Kotval each posting one helper.  Also making their marks on the score sheet were Vitto Gagliardi and Phillip Wong with one assist apiece.  Twelve of the Blackhawks' fifteen skaters registered at least one point in what was a very balanced attack.  Defensively, the team was not as steady as they were yesterday in Oakland, but their eight goal outburst never left this one in doubt.  Goaltender Sam Boyer improved to 2-0-0 in regular season play with 14 saves on 17 shots.

The Blackhawks look to finish 2005 undefeated in NORCAL play, but they face a difficult challenge next weekend when they face-off against the California Cougars and the San Jose Jr. Sharks.  Santa Clara has had their hands full in match-ups against both clubs, and the first place Hawks can expect each of them to be fired up and ready for the challenge.

The first blemish on the Santa Clara Blackhawks' regular season record was handed to them Saturday care of the desperate and winless California Cougars.  The Cougars came into the match with a deceiving 0-3-1 record, and that might have have been enough to cause the Hawks to start slowly, perhaps looking a day ahead to their big rematch with the San Jose Jr. Sharks.  In any event, the Cougars got the quick start and Santa Clara's reaction was to take unnecessary penalties, which opened the door for two, first period power play goals for the Cougars.  Only a big save from goaltender Devon Luna at 0:08 prevented the Cougars from stretching their lead to 3-0 to close out the period.

Staring at a 2-0 hole as the second period got underway, Santa Clara began to perform like a first place team.  Collectively, they picked up the pace and for the final two periods of play, the Blackhawks' speed and skill increasingly found the Cougars skating on their heels.  The Blackhawks outshot the Cougars by a 31-10 margin over the final two periods, and if it were not for one shot off the post, an early whistle, and solid goaltending from the Cougars, Santa Clara would have won the game.  But the Cougars are a good hockey team and they had their chances as well over the final thirty minutes of play.  In the end, the Cougars were unable to solve Devon Luna at even strength, and that spelled the difference.  The Blackhawks got on the board at 6:36 of the second period, after defenseman Kevin Brown deflected a Cougars' clearing attempt with his skate ahead to Anthony DragottoDragotto made a little deke and penetrated the center slot before feeding Jason Pacheco, who was moving down the left wing.  Pacheco sent the puck back toward the net, where Dragotto got a backhand on it and pushed it past the goalie.  That cut the Cougars' lead in half and the second period ended with the Blackhawks trailing, 2-1.

Early in the third period, Santa Clara's Jeremy Mamon whistled a wrist rocket off the post, missing an opportunity for the equalizer by an inch or so.  But the Blackhawks still tied it up less than a minute later, at 11:19.  Nick Costa started the play, shaking off a defender and taking the biscuit behind the net before feeding a centering pass to Anthony DragottoDragotto ripped one wide that Phillip Wong collected behind the net.  Moving to the opposite post, Wong centered a pass back out front to a pinching Kevin Brown.  With the goalie ever-so-slightly out of position, Brown one-timed it to the sweet spot, finding nothing but net.  The Blackhawks kept up the pressure, dominating play at equal strength, before just missing again at 9:57 when a rebound shot was stuffed into the net just after the referee had whistled the play dead.  Neither team was able to score the rest of the way, though both clubs had near misses.  Devon Luna came up with a huge, glovehand snag at 2:11, to save the day for the Blackhawks.  And then, just before the final buzzer, the Cougars' netminder returned the favor with a game-saving rejection of his own.

The Blackhawks play their seventh game of the NORCAL regular season tomorrow in a big game against the San Jose Jr. Sharks.  It will also mark their final regular season game of 2005.  Santa Clara will open 2006 with their third and final match-up with Team Teal, so these back-to-back meetings are huge for both clubs.  The Blackhawks will then be done with Sharkies until playoff time, so there is little doubt that San Jose will be amped up tomorrow, looking to avenge their earlier 3-2 regular season loss to the Hawks.

Santa Clara Finishes First Half With a 5-0 Flourish
             December 11, 2005
After playing the San Jose Jr. Sharks to a one-goal win in the regular season, and a one-goal loss and a tie in preseason, today's contest with the finned fish had the makings of another nail-biter.  And to be sure, the teams battled evenly for much of the game.  But this time, the Santa Clara Blackhawks pulled away with a three-goal outburst in the third period and finished out 2005 with a 5-0 win over their NORCAL arch-rivals.  Patrick Castagna led the way for the Blackhawks, netting a hat trick as well as an assist. Kevin Brown scored in his second straight game, and Vitto Gagliardi added the remaining goal for the Hawks.  Goaltender Devon Luna stopped all 21 shots he faced, running his even-strength, NORCAL unscored-upon streak to 142:24.  Counting the Thanksgiving Tournament, Luna'a even-strength unscored-upon streak spans a gaudy 176:39.  It was his fourth shutout of the year and his second of the regular season.

The first period of today's game was closely contested with neither team scoring.  Kyle Yedlicka just missed on two good scoring chances and Phillip Wong was unable to cash in on a shorthanded opportunity.  The Blackhawks did a nice job on two penalty kills, sparked by solid special teams work from defensemen Brian Quirolo, Nick Lavarias, Dustin Holt, Kevin Brown, and fill-in Sam Boyer, and by a big open-ice hit from Nick CostaDevon Luna made nine saves in the period, including a tough stop in front at 1:30 while San Jose was on the power play.

In the second period, Santa Clara had to kill four penalties, but they still managed to get on the board twice.  During an early-period penalty-kill, Phillip Wong got loose on a breakaway after a steal, but Wong was once again denied on his good-look shorthanded chance.  Wong did manage to get on the scoresheet a short time later when he connected with Patrick Castagna on a great headman pass as he was exiting the penalty box.  Castagna grabbed the pass in stride, and scored on the breakaway, top shelf, glovehand-side to give Santa Clara the 1-0 lead.  Nick Lavarias picked up the second assist on the play, for digging the puck out from behind his own net and moving it ahead to Wong.  At 10:33, Patrick Castagna made it 2-0, stuffing a shot through the goaltender's five-hole while the Blackhawks were on the power play.  Kyle Yedlicka and Vitto Gagliardi recorded the helpers.

Santa Clara added three more goals in the final fifteen minutes of play, starting with Kevin Brown's slapshot through a Phillip Wong screen at 11:16. Anthony Dragotto's kick-out pass to Brian Quirolo, and Quirolo's quick, cross-ice pass to Brown, earned each of them well-deserved helpers.  San Jose earned another power play opportunity at 6:43, and they used the man advantage to try and gain some ground on the Hawks.  But another successful penalty kill ensued, led by great stuffage by Devon Luna on a point-blank shot at 6:30.  Patrick Castagna then earned his second hat trick of the regular season when he pickpocketed a pass and scored on an unassisted shorthanded breakaway at 6:10.  Vitto Gagliardi capped the scoring for the Blackhawks when he redirected Kyle Yedlicka's wrister into the net at 0:26.  Patrick Castagna picked up the second assist, as well as his fourth point of the game, on the play.

The Blackhawks wrap up 2005 with a 6-0-1 NORCAL record, four points ahead of the 4-1-1 Tri-Valley Blue Devils.  The Devils and Hawks have not met since preseason, so 2006 will feature three tilts between the top two teams in the division.  In between, Santa Clara will travel to Valencia to play in the Ice Station Holiday Fest, from December 26-30.

Hawks Wring out Sharks to Ring in New Year
             January 8, 2006
Riding the strength of an early scoring punch, the Santa Clara Blackhawks cruised to a 6-3 victory over the San Jose Jr. Sharks in their first game of the new year.  Santa Clara's win, combined with Tri-Valley's loss to Santa Rosa, extends the Blackhawks' NORCAL lead to six points.

San Jose came into today's game with three top player sitting out the contest due to suspensions, and this was not the typical high-energy affair that we have grown accustomed to when these two arch rivals face off.  As a result, Santa Clara took charge early, scoring four goals in the first 7:57 to take a commanding 4-0 lead.  Jeremy Mamon got things started at 13:16, taking a pass pass off the side boards from Derek Fredericks and then rifling a wrister over the outstretched glove of San Jose's netminder. Anthony Dragotto followed up less than a minute later with another glovehand-side wrist rocket to make it 2-0. Phillip Wong started the play with a strong forecheck that allowed him to gain possession behind the Jr.  Sharks net and move the puck over to Nick CostaCosta sent a centering pass from behind the net out to Dragotto, and Dragotto then settled the biscuit before popping it in the oven at 12:26.  At 10:30, Brandon Shore made it 3-0 on a one-timer from the front porch off feeds from Patrick Castagna and Kyle Yedlicka.  On the possession, Brian Quirolo got it started with a nice play to hold the zone on a clearing attempt.  The Hawks rounded out their first period scoring on a hard slapshot from the center slot by Jeremy Mamon. Mitch Venosta and Dustin Holt picked up the helpers on what turned out to be the game-winning goal.

Santa Clara's blistering start changed the game's intensity level and neither team looked particularly sharp in the middle period.  Santa Clara did extend its lead to 6-0 on goals from Kyle Yedlicka and Vitto Gagliardi. Yedlicka scored on a low snapper from the center slot at 11:13, with assists going to Patrick Castagna and Nick Lavarias.  The Hawks' sixth goal came off the stick of Gagliardi on a wraparound shot at 3:57.  Kevin Brown and Kyle Yedlicka assisted on the play,  All told, fourteen Santa Clara skaters got on the scoresheet in what was a very balanced scoring attack, and the Blackhawks closed out the period in command, 6-0.  In the third period, San Jose took advantage of mediocre special teams play by the Hawks to score three power play goals and narrow the final gap to 6-3.  The breakdowns on the power play and the penalty kill served to remind the Blackhawks that they need to be firing on all cylinders if they hope to capture a third consecutive Midget-A championship.  The Jr. Sharks were overmatched today, but that wont be the case with a full roster in a playoff atmosphere.

After a bye next weekend, Santa Clara will return to action on January 22 with a rematch against the California Cougars.  The Cougars produced the only blemish on the Blackhawks' regular season record so far, when they held on to escape with one point in a 2-2 contest played in San Mateo.

Together is Better in 7-1 Blackhawks Victory
             January 22, 2006
Fourteen different Santa Clara skaters combined to register seventeen points, in a complete-game 7-1 humbling of the California Cougars on Sunday.  With the win, the Blackhawks improve to 8-0-1 in regular season play, and they avenge their only blemish, a 2-2 tie against these same Cougars on the Cougars' home ice.  This Blackhawks club has great talent and depth, and when they play together, they are a championship-contending club, as they demonstrated today.  Patrick Castagna was the game's only two-goal scorer.  Five other Hawks got into the lamp-lighting act - Nick Costa, Dustin Holt, Brandon Shore, Kyle Yedlicka, and Jason Pacheco.  All ten Blackhawks' assists came from different players - Yedlicka, Pacheco, Phillip Wong, Anthony Dragotto, Vitto Gagliardi, Mitch Venosta, Jeremy Mamon, Derek Fredericks, Robert Kotval, and Kevin Brown.  And goaltender Devon Luna was no slouch in this game either.  He turned in another lights-out performance, setting aside 26 shots and losing his shutout bid with just 3:19 left to play.

The Hawks' all-round performance was epitomized by bookend goals that were scored as direct results of great forechecking and backchecking by Phillip Wong and Jeremy Mamon.  The Blackhawks got on the board first, at 12:47, after Wong delivered a punishing forecheck on a dump-in, and then grabbed possession and fed the biscuit out front to Nick Costa, who buried the bone, short side.  Anthony Dragotto got the secondary assist on the play, which was made possible by Wong's hit.  The Blackhawks final goal of the contest did not earn Jeremy Mamon an assist, but his well-executed check behind the Blackhawks' net allowed Kevin Brown to gain control and immediately sweep the puck around the side boards to Jason PachecoPacheco tipped the puck away from a Cougars skater as it slid into the neutral zone, and then stepped around the defender to regain control and escape for a breakaway, which he converted with a nifty move around the goaltender.  Both Pacheco and Costa's goals were testaments to how team play and hard work away from the puck leads to W's.

Patrick Castagna scored the Hawks' second goal of the game after his line outworked the Cougars' line on a lengthy shift inside the Cougars' zone.  Vitto Gagliardi and Kyle Yedlicka each earned assists for cycling the puck before Yedlicka and Castagna executed a quick give-and-go in the left slot area.  Castagna stuffed the return pass home to make it 2-0 at 5:07.  Another smart play by the Blackhawks earned them their third and final goal of the period.  This time it was Dustin Holt making not one, but two smart decisions, that ultimately earned him a goal.  First, Holt denied a clearing attempt that the Cougars sent around the boards.  Sensing that he could get there in time, Holt pinched in along the boards and got his stick on the puck, sending it back behind the net.  As Holt circled back to retake his defensive position, he saw that Jeremy Mamon had his back, so Holt circled again and broke for the net.  Jason Pacheco spotted him and sent a centering feed toward the crease that Holt got to, popping the bun in the oven.  Mitch Venosta earned the secondary assist on the play.

The Hawks put together another solid fifteen minutes of hockey in the second period, but they didn't score until the final minute - and this time, it was a scant two seconds of teamwork that made it happen.  On a face-off in the Cougars' zone with just 0:34 remaining in the period, Jeremy Mamon played the drop forward to Brandon ShoreShore stepped around his defender and took the clean face-off win and immediately roofed it for one of the quickest goals you will ever see off a face-off.  In the third period, Santa Clara capped their scoring with the aforementioned goal by Jason Pacheco, which was preceded by goals from Patrick Castagna and Kyle YedlickaCastagna's goal came after defenseman Robert Kotval fed cross ice to Derek Fredericks, and Fredericks ripped a hard pass ahead and off the side boards to Castagna, who then moved deep into the Cougars' zone before rifling a shot over the netminder's outstretched glove.  Yedlicka's goal was of the unassisted variety and came after he intercepted a pass intended for a defensemen positioned along the side boards at the blueline. Yedlickafed the puck around the D-man to himself, and then sidestepped another defender on his way to schooling the goaltender for the Blackhawks sixth goal of the contest.

Goaltender Devon Luna faced his toughest shots after the Blackhawks had built a comfortable lead.  But when the shots came, he was ready.  Luna made a sweet glovehand snag at 10:17 of the opening period, and another quick snatch with the chopper at 13:08 of the second period.  His toughest saves were reserved for the third period when he came up big on a two-on-one at 7:22, following that up with an outstanding side-to-side save that he smothered down low on the same shift.  Luna best saves of the game came back-to-back, first with the glove at 4:10, and then with a great stretch of the toe, at 4:05.  Luna lost his shutout bid when he stumbled just a bit on a breakaway.  Even then, it took a nice shot to the top of the net to beat him for the Cougars' only goal.

The Blackhawks play three of their next four games against the second place Tri-Valley Blue Devils.  The Devils rallied to beat the Blackhawks, 4-3, in their only prior meeting, a preseason affair way back on October 16th.  Tri-Valley is playing at the Silver Sticks Tournament in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada this weekend, so they are facing some very stiff competition that will certainly help get them prepared for the Blackhawks.

Special Teams Overcome Devils' Hard Work, 5-1
             February 4, 2006
The Santa Clara Blackhawks finally played their first regular season game against the Tri-Valley Blue Devils on Saturday, matching up against a club that has the second best win-loss record in NORCAL, and a preseason win under their belts over the Hawks.  Tri-Valley proved to be a formidable foe, playing the Blackhawks aggressively with a strong forecheck and a defense that stood the Blackhawks up at the blueline.  But Santa Clara took advantage of their special teams opportunities, scoring three power play goals and a shorthanded goal to eventually outdistance the Blue Devils, 5-1.  The game was much closer that the score would suggest, with Santa Clara scoring two goals in the final 5:12 of play, and not gaining a two-goal cushion until late in the second period.  Tri-Valley actually scored first, after a neutral zone turnover resulted in a partial breakaway goal at 10:20 of the first period.  But Santa Clara goaltender Sam Boyer was the difference today, and he was perfect from that point on, denying the last 20+ shots that were fired his way and giving the Blackhawks an opportunity to catch up, and then finally, pull away.  The Blackhawks scoring attack was once again spread around, with Anthony Dragotto, Kevin Brown, Nick Lavarias, Jeremy Mamon, and Kyle Yedlicka scoring the goals.  Assists were recorded by Lavarias, Yedlicka, Dragotto, Brian Quirolo, Patrick Castagna, Nick Costa, and Brandon Shore.

It took the Blackhawks just 1:12 to fire back with the equalizer after Tri-Valley got on the board first.  Anthony Dragotto took a faceoff win from Brandon Shore into the right corner and then he centered a pass back to Shore, who sent a give-and-go return feed right back to Dragotto, who punched it in at 9:08 to make it 1-1.  That was all the scoring in a very evenly played opening period in which both teams generated 10 shots on goal.

The Blue Devils came out strong in the second period and delivered some good scoring chances.  Goaltender Sam Boyer came up with a strong save in front at 11:04 during an extended Tri-Valley stay in the Blackhawks' zone.  Boyer followed that up with a spectacular glovehand snag at 10:08, and then he denied a two-on-one rush at 8:15 that turned into a short breakaway after a nice cross-ice pass.  Having weathered the Blue Devils' assault, it was time for Blackhawks to sustain some offensive pressure of their own.  They got their chance when the Blue Devils committed a minor penalty at 6:06.  Santa Clara made better use of their defensemen on the power play today than they have of late, with good high-low passing that led to two power play goals from the blueline.  On the first of those goals, Kyle Yedlicka delivered a soft pass off the boards from behind the end line out to Kevin Brown at the left point.  Brown fed cross ice to Nick Lavarias at the right point and Lavarias delivered a shot that deflect off a skate and back over to Brown. Brown jumped on it and pounded a quick, one-timer slapshot that was redirected slightly off a Devils' stick before slicing into the back of the net. Brown's wingmate Lavarias was the next to score, also on the power play, at 3:07.  Nick Costa and Anthony Dragotto made the play possible when they outworked the Blue Devils' defense to gain control of a shot that Lavarias fired wide of the net.  Dragotto's forecheck and positioning allowed him to grab control at the end boards before nudging a short pass out to Costa, who was near the right face-off dot.  Costa fed the biscuit out to Lavarias at the right point and Lavarias snapped off a shot that changed direction in mid-air after deflecting off a defenseman, and snuck through the goalie's five-hole for the score.  The second period would end with Santa Clara maintaining a 3-1 lead, thanks to a heads-up shoulder save by Sam Boyer at 2:10.

The third period breakdowns that have sometimes plagued the Blackhawks, did not materialize today.  Santa Clara's defense limited the Blue Devils to only six shots in the third period, maintaining their two-goal lead until a fluke play enabled them to extended their cushion to 4-1 at 5:12.  Skating on a power play, Tri-Valley's goaltender came far out of the net to play the puck after Nick Lavarias had iced it from his own end.  An onrushing Jeremy Mamon caused the goalie to rush his pass and he ended up fanning on it and then overskating the puck.  Mamon grabbed the disk and slipped it into the empty net for the shorthanded score.  One of the keys to today's special teams effort was something that the Blackhawks did not do, and that was pick up a bundle of penalties.  In fact, Tri-Valley's first power play did not come until 5:47 of the third period.  At 4:16, the Blackhawks picked up a second penalty, giving the Blue Devils a 0:30 two-man advantage.  The Hawks killed both penalties with the help of a smothering save by Sam Boyer on a hard slapshot with six seconds remaining on the five-on-three.  Santa Clara then iced the game with their third power play goal, at 2:53.  Again, the score was initiated at the blueline, when Brian Quirolo passed from the right point to the left point, where Patrick Castagna was stationed.  Castagna let loose a wicked slapshot that Kyle Yedlicka redirected into the back of the net for the final tally of the 5-1 affair.

Santa Clara should not get too overconfident by its win.  The contest was very competitive at even strength, and four of Santa Clara's five goals came off of deflections.  That's not to say that it wasn't a solid effort by the Hawks.  It was.  But Tri-Valley demonstrated that they can skate with the Blackhawks and stand them up in the neutral zone.  And the Devils only have to wait one more week for a rematch.  Santa Clara will travel to Oakland next Sunday to face the Devils again, after squaring off against the tough California Cougars in Saturday's first game of a doubleheader weekend.

Hawks Cage Cougars, 4-1
             February 11, 2006
Returning to the scene of their 1-1 tie earlier this year against the California Cougars, the Santa Clara Blackhawks played like the home team, with forty-five minutes of dominating hockey and a 4-1 victory.  With the win, Santa Clara improves to 10-0-1 in regular season play with just four NORCAL league games remaining.  Kyle Yedlicka led the Blackhawks' attack today, scoring twice in the victory. Jeremy Mamon and Brandon Shore also scored for a Blackhawks squad that totally dominated the shot count by a 48-12 margin.  Patrick Castagna and Kevin Brown each notched two key assists for the Hawks, with single helpers registered by Robert Kotval, Nick Lavarias, and Nick CostaSam Boyer chalked up the win between the pipes, making eleven saves on just twelve shots. Boyer lost his shutout bid on an open wrister that snapped past him with just 1:24 left to play.

If it were not for outstanding goaltending work from the Cougars, this game could have been a double-figure rout.  The Blackhawks outshot the Cougars 14-3 in the opening period, and 35-6 over two periods.  But they only lit the lamp once in the first period and then twice more in the second.  Rebound shots were the order of the day, though it was a good old-fashioned give-and-go between Kyle Yedlicka and Patrick Castagna that got Santa Clara on the board first.  The Hawks were skating on the power play when a second, delayed penalty was whistled against the Cougars. Yedlicka collected a pass at the left side boards from Kevin Brown, then he rushed towards the goal after sending a pass behind the net to Castagna. Yedlicka one-timed the return feed past the goalie to make it 1-0 at 12:10 of the opening period.  The Cougars were unable to surmount much of an attack in the opening act, and their only power play opportunity was thwarted by the Hawks' special teams, led by the Nick Costa penalty-kill buzzsaw.

The Blackhawks added two goals in the second period in a span of just 2:15.  After Robert Kotval made a nice play to intercept a clearing attempt, he poked it back in to Jeremy Mamon, who circled toward the middle of the slot with no defenders in pursuit.  Mamon took advantage of the defensive lapse to pick his spot, and it was a sweet one, just inside the pipe and beyond the reach of the goaltender's outstretched chopper. Mamon's goal came at 10:35 and it was followed up by a rebound rip by Kyle Yedlicka at 8:20.  The Castagna, Yedlicka, Vitto Gagliardi line pounded away on this particular shift, grabbing every loose puck and controlling the zone.  Taking a drop pass from Gagliardi, defenseman Kevin Brown spun a shot toward the net that banked off of Patrick Castagna and over to Kyle Yedlicka, who wasted no time racking home the rebound to make it 3-0.  Goaltender Sam Boyer only faced three more shots in the period, but one was a great scoring chance that Boyer kicked aside at 5:20.

The Blackhawks continued to rack up shots in the third period, but there was no further scoring until late in the game, and it was the Cougars who found the net first.  Sam Boyer's shutout bid was foiled on a nice snapper from the left slot at 1:24.  While the goal came too late to make a difference in the final outcome, it was a momentary moral victory for the overmatched Cougars.  But that moral victory lasted all of 1:20.  Santa Clara put the final nail in the Cougars' coffin with just four seconds to play.  Phillip Wong made the coffin-sealing goal possible with the aggressive play being the net to control a loose puck.  Gaining posession, Wong spotted a pass out to blueliner Nick Lavarias who sent a slapshot towards the net.  Nick Costa deflected the shot from right in front of the net, and it banked off the goalie and over the the other side of the crease where Brandon Shore was camped for the put-back, giving the Blackhawks their final margin of victory.

Santa Clara returns to play tomorrow on the road against the Tri-Valley Blue Devils.  The Blue Devils gave the Blackhawks all they could handle last week and they promise to be tough once again.  Tri-Valley upped their NORCAL record to 5-3-1 with a 5-1 mauling of the Oakland Bears earlier today.

Hawks Clinch Regular-Season Title in 1-0 Battle
             February 12, 2006
A good, old-fashioned 1-0 hockey game was played between two of the top NORCAL teams on Sunday and the Santa Clara Blackhawks prevailed to up their season record to 11-0-1.  With the win, Santa Clara clinches first place and the #1 seed in the upcoming NORCAL tournament.  But the Blue Devils once again demonstrated that they are a foe to be reckoned with.  They played the Hawks aggressively, contesting almost every shot they faced.  It was really a tale of three different games played in three different periods.  Santa Clara dominated the first period, outshooting the Blue Devils by a 15-2 margin.  With the help of a couple Blackhawks penalties, Tri-Valley came back to dominate the second period shot count, 14-3.  The third period was evenly played and the shot count for that period was 8-8.  But oddly enough, Santa Clara won the game in the period they lost.  Anthony Dragotto converted on a sweet centering feed from Phillip Wong on a 3-on-1 rush to score the only goal of the contest at 10:59 of the second period.

Solid defense and spectacular goaltending was had by each team in this game.  Santa Clara's Devon Luna faced 24 shots in the contest, stopping them all and controlling most of his rebounds along the way.  Luna rejected a host of good scoring chances, including a deflected shot at 12:47 of the second period, and a sizzling slapshot that he gloved to end a Devils' power play at 11:38 of the same period.  He also managed to corral the few rebound shots that came his way.  Luna was aided by excellent defense around the net by his blueliner contingent.  The Blackhawks defensemen kept the Blue Devils net crashers from collecting any garbage goals, and the forwards hounded the puck carriers at both ends of the ice.  The game's only score came about after a Tri-Valley skater came into the Hawks' zone and dropped a pass for a trailer who skated right past it.  Phillip Wong collected the loose puck and sped through the neutral zone along the right side boards. Wong squeezed past a defender's attempt to check him into the boards, and emerged in the Devils' zone with a 3-on-1 numbers advantage.  Wong moved in through the right slot before passing over to Anthony Dragotto, who one-timed a twine-twister into the back of the net.

Tri-Valley was unable to convert on any of its five power plays, including 4:02 of extra skater time in the final frame.  With the Blue Devils' goaltender pulled for the extra attacker, Devon Luna sealed the victory with his 24th and final save of the game, at 0:15.

Santa Clara takes a week off of NORCAL play to skate against Midget-AA competition at the Phoenix Polar Bears Invitational in Arizona.  The Blackhawks will square off against the host club in their first game, scheduled for Friday night.

Hawks Undefeated, but Deflated by 4-4 Tie
             February 25, 2006
After their strong showing at the Phoenix Jr. Polars Midget-AA Presidents' Day Tournament, the Santa Clara Blackhawks suffered a letdown on their return to NORCAL play, managing only a 4-4 tie against the Oakland Bears.  The Blackhawks squandered a 3-1 second period lead, and a 4-2 third-period lead, and then were unable to score the game-winner after Oakland tied the contest with just five minutes to play.  It was a big point for the Bears, who are in a battle for the fourth and final NORCAL playoff spot.  For Santa Clara, it was an in-your-face wake-up call that at this level of hockey, nothing is guaranteed.

The Blackhawks were missing four players today, including a couple of their better forecheckers and one of their leading scorers.  But they have played well with key missing pieces in the past, so that was no excuse today.  On the other end of the ice, Oakland moved the puck well, and although they were outshot by the Hawks 42-24, many of the Bears' shots were very good scoring chances,  Goaltender Sam Boyer made at least a half-dozen lights-out saves throughout the contest.  The Blackhawks' offensive attack, which is normally quite balanced, was less so today.  Patrick Castagna, Phillip Wong, and Billy Kiernan led the offensive charge, each registering three points. Castagna had two goals and an assist, Wong notched one goal and two helpers, and Kiernan had a playmaker, assisting on three goals.. Jeremy Mamon scored the other Blackhawks' goal, and Dustin Holt also had an assist.

Oakland was first on the board today, and it was a giveaway behind their own net by the Blackhawks that set the table for the point-blank, one-timer goal at 9:04 of the first period.  Oakland had another chance later, at 4:32, on a similar one-timer pass out front, but goaltender Sam Boyer dropped quickly to stuff the shot and prevent Oakland from extending its lead to 2-0.  Off the rejection, Phillip Wong gathered in the puck and took a big hit along the left side boards in order to get off a nice headman pass to Billy Kiernan at the Bears' blueline.  Kiernan collected the puck and passed to the middle where Patrick Castagna had room to grab it and whistle off a top-corner, roof rocket beyond the goalie's outstretched glove.  At 2:08, Santa Clara extended its lead to 2-1 on the first of two shorthanded goals that they would score on the day.   After a Sam Boyer save, Billy Kiernan swept in from the slot and grabbed a loose puck and swept it around the boards.  The puck hit a seam and deflected toward center ice, where Patrick Castagna got to it just ahead of a defender, tipping it ahead to himself. Castagna generated a breakaway in the process, skating in and then making a great move to his forehand, before slipping the puck into the back of the net to give the Blackhawks a 2-1 lead to close out the period..

The second period opened with twenty-three seconds left on Oakland's power play and they wasted no time executing a couple of good shots.  But Sam Boyer was all over them, first with a toe save, then a close-range rejection on the follow-up at 14:32, and then finally with a glovehand snag at 14:11.  Boyer made two more heads-up saves on a Oakland power play that started at 9:03.  First, he denied a Bears scoring chance on a glovehand save through traffic at 7:42, and then he made a lightning quick save off a face-off shot at 7:27.  Santa Clara followed up with a couple of good chances of their own.  Mitch Venosta deflected a Kevin Brown slapshot at 6:40, but that shot was stopped; and then Jason Pacheco hit the post on a shot at 5:20.  But it wasn't until 4:22 that anyone scored in the period, and it was the Blackhawks who lit the lamp first.  With Jeremy Mamon battling for posession behind the Oakland net, Phillip Wong came around and grabbed the disk when it squirted free. Wong skated to the other side of the net and centered a pass to Billy Kiernan, who spun and fired a low, hard shot on net.  The Bears' backstop made a pad save, but an alert Jeremy Mamon had gotten back into the play and he swept the rebound through the goalie's 5-hole for the score, increasing Santa Clara's lead to 3-1.  The Bears came right back however, with a goal at 2:10.  Again, it was an Oakland skater in front of the net collecting a one-timer pass for the score, making it 3-2.  But the period wasn't over just yet.  The Blackhawks picked up their tenth penalty of the game at 1:16, giving Oakland their sixth chance on the power play.  For the second time in the contest, the Hawks responded with a shorthanded goal.  Patrick Castagna started the play by wining a face-off in his own end, back to Dustin Holt, who immediate sent the puck off the boards and into the Bears' zone.  The zone clearing pass ended up leading Phillip Wong just perfectly. Wong split the defenders and outraced them to the puck, collecting it and zipping a shot glovehand side for the score, making it 4-2 at 0:27.

Oakland never gave up and they got the game back to within a single goal when they converted on the power play at 7:49.  Oakland then picked up two quick penalties in a span of just eighteen seconds, giving Clara a 1:42, two-man advantage that starting at the 7:12 mark.  With a chance to once again extend their lead to two goals, the Blackhawks failed to convert.  The big penalty kill inspired the Bears and they responded by tying it up shortly after they returned to full strength.  The equalizer came at 5:02, and the Hawks responded with a viscous offensive assault that generated several good shots, but no more goals.  The contest ended with game-saving saves at both ends of the ice.  Sam Boyer made a pad save on an Oakland power play at 0:59, and then Patrick Castagna was denied when he got inside on the goaltender with just two seconds left on the clock.

Santa Clara looks to get back on track in their final home game of the regular season, a Friday night affair next week against the third-place, Tri-Valley Blue Devils.  Tri-Valley is coming off a very successful Presidents' Day tournament, having gone 4-1-0 to win the AA division of the Glacial Garden tournament in Southern California.  The Devils are sure to be fired up and ready to avenge their two, close regular season losses to the Hawks.

Blackhawks Rebound to Pound Blue Devils, 5-0
             March 3, 2006
With just one regular season game left before the Santa Clara Blackhawks begin their postseason quest for a third consecutive Midget-A state championship, the black & red appear to have their act together and the machine well oiled for a three-peat.  Santa Clara used their superior speed and skill, and a dominating forecheck today to strangle the Tri-Valley Blue Devils, 5-0.  While the Blue Devils did their best to play the same sort of aggressive style that enabled them to hang with the Blackhawks in two earlier NORCAL match-ups, today it was the Santa Clara club that stepped it up a notch and carried the action for most of the game.  The 25-24 shot count was close, but the Blackhawks got the better chances, particularly in the first two periods of play.  Tri-Valley was unable to get much going at all in the first period, generating only six shots while falling behind 2-0 on the strength of goals by Brandon Shore and Kyle Yedlicka.

The Hawks put this game away with third-period goals from Jason Pacheco, Vitto Gagliardi, and Patrick Castagna.  Special teams play was near perfect for the Blackhawks, as evidenced by two power play goals (from Shore and Gagliardi) and two shorthanded goals (Pacheco and Castagna).  Meanwhile, Tri-Valley went 0-8 on the power play, often having a hard time even getting off a hots.  Once again, the Hawks demonstrated that they are at their best when their scoring is spread around.  In addition to having five different goal scorers, Santa Clara tallied ten assists, coming from nine different skaters.  Kyle Yedlicka recorded two assists, while lone helpers were posted by Gagliardi, Castagna, Anthony Dragotto, Nick Costa, Nick Lavarias, Jeremy Mamon, Dustin Holt, and Kevin BrownDevon Luna posted his fourth regular season shutout and his eighth overall, stopping twenty-four shots along the way, including several good scoring chances in the third period.  Luna has allowed a grand total of just ten goals in nine regular season appearances, while compiling a save percentage of 95.2%.

Santa Clara's first goal today came on the power play and was initiated by a nice play by Billy Kiernan to hold the zone and force a battle for the biscuit along the side boards. Nick Costa eventually got to it and poked it ahead to Anthony Dragotto in the center slot.  Dragotto moved to his left, shielding the puck as he penetrated the zone further.  Nearing the goal line, Dragotto sent a centering pass through the crease that Brandon Shore one-timed home at 8:53.  The Blackhawks extended their lead to 2-0 at 4:57 on a fluke goal that the Blue Devils' netminder put into his own net.  The own goal came about when a dump-in by Nick Lavarias bounded off the end boards and dribbled back towards the side of the Tri-Valley net.  The Devils' goaltender went to play the puck and accidentally drew it between his own legs and into the net for the gimme goal.  Kyle Yedlicka was the closest Blackhawk to the play and he was given credit for the score, with assists going to Lavarias and Vitto Gagliardi.  The period ended with the Hawks leading by that same 2-0 margin.

After committing no penalties in the opening period, Santa Clara was whistled for four minor infractions in the second period, and they killed them all with a pressuring defense and solid goaltending.  Tri-Valley was unable to get anything going on their first power play, and on their second, Devon Luna came up with a couple of glovehand snags at 10:23 and 10:18.  The best chances were reserved for the Blackhawks however, with good shorthanded shots coming off the sticks of Jeremy Mamon and Mitch Venosta.  The teams continued trading chances for the balance of the period, but neither team was able to score.  Luna stuffed a one-timer from his front porch at 7:30, and Santa Clara's Kyle Yedlicka was denied on a good opportunity inside at 4:35 while the teams were skating four-on-four.  Luna denied a wrister at 3:10, after which time Jason Pacheco and Anthony Dragotto were rejected during a Blackhawks' power play.  The period came to a close after Luna dropped and covered up a hard slapper at 0:15.

Tri-Valley came out recharged in the third period and they began generating better scoring chances.  But Devon Luna's wall remained firmly intact and nothing got by him.  The Devils first good chance came on a power play slapshot through traffic at 14:30. Luna covered up the rebound as a Tri-Valley skater whacked away at him looking to dislodge the biscuit.  At 12:47, Santa Clara was called for another minor penalty and this time the Blackhawks converted on their shorthanded chance.  Dustin Holt started the play by alertly deflecting a centering pass in his own zone with his skate, over to Jason Pacheco. Pacheco iced the puck and a hard-charging Jeremy Mamon won the battle for it along the end boards, gaining control and centering Pacheco who had hustled all the was down the ice.  Pacheco deposited the feed with a one-time rip to make it 3-0 at 12:00.  Goaltender Devon Luna started facing more rubber at that point, first coming up with a rejection through traffic at 9:00, and then stuffing a hard wrister from the left slot a short time later. Luna then delivered pink slips to a shooter from close range at 7:15, and another though a long-distance traffic jam at 6:30.   Santa Clara earned their fifth and final power play at 5:59 and they would convert with the man advantage for the second time in the contest.  Patrick Castagna initiated the sequence with a shot that was saved with a deflection over the net.  Kyle Yedlicka came up with it there and he moved to the side of the net, centering a pinching Billy Kiernan.  A Blue Devils' defenseman blocked the pass with his stick and it deflected out toward the blueline where Castagna made a nice play to reach out and glove the puck, keeping it from leaving the zone.  Castagna immediately wheeled around and fired a shot from deep in the center slot that the goaltender stopped but could not hold.  The rebound dropped to the ice and Vitto Gagliardi immediately punched it into the back of the net for the rebound conversion at 4:31.  Santa Clara still had one more in the tank, and this time it was of the shorthanded variety.  Kevin Brown started the play by blocking a shot with his skate out toward the center slot where Kyle Yedlicka raced to it and took off down the right wing, skating around a backpedaling defender. Yedlicka drew a second defender and then passed over to the middle of the ice where Patrick Castagna collected it and then deposited it past the netminder for the short-side, shorthanded strike at 1:42.  With the peanut gallery screaming for a shutout down the stretch, Devon Luna delivered, blanking the Blue Devils the rest of the way and for the second straight time.

Santa Clara wraps up its regular season next weekend with a Sunday night contest in Santa Rosa against the last place Flyers.  The Hawks will then spend the following week preparing for post season, where anything can happen.  Hopefully, the Blackhawks can borrow a lesson from last year's NORCAL regular season champion, Oakland Bears, who learned that first place in the regular season means nothing when the stakes get raised come playoff time.

13-3 Win and 13-0-2 Record to be Relished & Forgotten
             March 12, 2006
Having clinched the NORCAL regular season title weeks ago, this evening's 13-3 mauling of the last place Santa Rosa Flyers was the exclamation point to what has already been an exceptional season for the Santa Clara Blackhawks.  The Hawks ran away with the regular season title, outdistancing the second place San Jose Jr. Sharks by eleven points in the standings.  But four quality teams are back on equal footing as they prepare for next weekend's NORCAL championship tournament, and those who have been there before know that regular season titles mean little come playoff time.  Santa Clara's first tournament opponent, the Oakland Bears, know that all too well, having won the regular season title last year, only to be eliminated from contention for a NORCAL or CAHA title with back-to-back losses in tournament play.  The Bears are sure to be fired up, as will be the Tri-Valley Blue Devils and the San Jose Jr. Sharks.  Each of these teams have played the Blackhawks tough and they will come into battle with their minds set on winning.
While it is difficult to gauge the team's preparedness in a game against an overmatched foe, Santa Clara looked sharp this evening, moving the puck well and working hard on the forecheck.  Patrick Castagna and Kyle Yedlicka each tallied a hat trick and four assists.  Linesmate Vitto Gagliardi had a goal and three assists to cap an 18-point performance by the Hawks' top line.  But the contributions didn't stop there. Jason Pacheco and Anthony Dragotto netted two goals apiece, and Nick Costa and Brandon Shore each lit the lamp as well.  Additional assists were contributed by Costa, Shore, Robert Kotval, Nick Lavarias, Dustin Holt (two each), and by Dragotto and Derek Fredericks (one apiece).  Goaltender Sam Boyer improved his regular season record to 5-0-1 with the win.

The Blackhawks got out of the gate quickly, scoring seven goals in the opening period, including two in the final nineteen seconds.  To add insult to injury, they scored again just 27 seconds into the second period.  A quick recap of the first period shows goals coming in all flavors:  A power play rebound goal by Jason Pacheco off a Derek Fredericks slapshot at 13:46 (also assisted by Nick Lavarias); another rebound goal by Vitto Gagliardi at 6:26 (assisted by Kyle Yedlicka and Patrick Castagna); a wrister from the left slot off the goalie's pads by Pacheco at 5:33 (assisted by Robert Kotval); a one-timer by Castagna at 3:20 off a pass from Yedlicka after Yedlicka grabbed the rebound of his own shot; a one timer from the front porch by Nick Costa at 0:19 off a sweet, no-look feed from behind the net by Anthony Dragotto (also assisted by Brandon Shore); and another stick-to-it, rebound goal by Yedlicka off a slapshot from Nick Lavarias at 0:02 (also assisted by Castagna).

The Blackhawks added three more goals in the second period.  Capping a three-goal outburst that came in just 48 seconds, Kyle Yedlicka snapped a shot past the goaltender's outstretched glove off a face-off feed from Patrick Castagna at 14:33.  At 7:14, Brandon Shore tipped a nice pass across the crease to Nick Costa who's partial fan on the shot turned into a perfect drop pass to Anthony Dragotto that he deposited into the back of the net.  Goal number nine came on the power play at 1:30 after a nice series of quick passes from Fredericks to Yedlicka, to Dragotto who was stationed behind the Flyers' net.  Dragotto centered Patrick Castagna who then buried the bone to extend the Blackhawks' lead to 9-2 to close out the second period.

Santa Clara had four more net twisters in store for the final period of play.  Patrick Castagna converted on a give-and-go feed from Gagliardi at 13:15 (also assisted by Yedlicka); blueliners Robert Kotval and Dustin Holt each assisted on Brandon Shore's rebound strike at 11:25; Yedlicka's quick sniper shot off a feed from Gagliardi (also assisted by Cstagna) gave the Hawks their third power play goal of the contest, at 4:26; and Nick Costa's terrific drop pass to Anthony Dragotto and Dragotto's subsequent wrister from the center slot capped the Blackhawks scoring at 1:36 (also assisted by Dustin Holt).

Santa Clara opens NORCAL tournament play with a Friday night contest against Oakland.  They then square off with Tri-Valley on Saturday night, and then conclude round robin play with a game against San Jose on Sunday morning.  The NORCAL championship game is scheduled for next Sunday night at 6:00 PM.
