Hawks Open Tournament with 4-1 Win over Host Phoenix
              February 17, 2006

The Santa Clara Blackhawks traveled to the Valley of the Sun and put the host Phoenix Polar Bears on ice Friday in the Polar Bears Invitational, Midget-AA opener.  The Blackhawks were clearly the better team, but they had their troubles putting this game away after scoring early on a fluke goal by Dustin HoltPatrick Castagna tallied a late, second period goal to extend the Hawks' lead to 2-0, and Anthony Dragotto scored twice in the final period to account for the other Blackhawks' goals.  Assists were notched by Holt and Derek Fredericks from the blueline, and by forwards Kyle Yedlicka, Vitto Gagliardi, Brandon Shore, and Phillip WongDevon Luna was his usual, dependable self, stopping 20 of 21 shots including several tough ones, particularly in the second period.

The Blackhawks demonstrated their superiority early, tallying the first six shots of the game.  The scored their first and only goal of the period at 12:59 and it was one that the Bears' goalie would like to forget.  Defenseman Dustin Holt grabbed a loose puck near the right face-off dot in his own zone and sent a nice head-man pass off the boards and into the Phoenix zone. Anthony Dragotto had a step on the defense and it looked like he might have a clean shot at a breakaway until he was hooked from behind by a chasing defender.  No penalty was called and the Phoenix goalie came out of the net to play the slow moving puck.  But he fanned on his pass and the puck continued past him, dribbling into the net for the score.  It was the easiest goal that the Blackhawks are likely to see all season, but they all count and Holt's unassisted bank-shot from the defensive zone face-off dot gave the Hawks the 1-0 lead.  Despite outshooting the Bears 15-8 in the period, Santa Clara was unable to add to its lead.  Shots were weak or from bad angles and the Blackhawks were attempting too many long, home-run passes.  The result was a number of turnovers, one of which led to a 2-on-1 rush by the Bears while they were on the penalty kill.  But Devon Luna came up with the strong stop, holding the Bears of the board.  Santa Clara earned a 0:46, five-on-three after Phoenix picked up back-to-back penalties late in the period.  But the Hawks were unable to convert and the period ended with the Blackhawks clinging to the 1-0 lead.

With Santa Clara's offense out of sync, the defensive took over in the second period, led by several punishing hits from  Brian QuiroloQuirolo also made a nice play to defend a partial breakaway at 8:10, allowing Devon Luna to come up with the save.  Blackhawks' captain Patrick Castagna stepped up his game in an effort to help the Blackhawks gain a little cushion, generating two good chances near the 7:21 mark.  But the Bears' goalie came up with some big saves to deny Castagna's chances.  Devon Luna then contributed his best rejections of the game, with a kick save at 6:15, and then a one-timer robbery on a 2-on-1 Phoenix rush at 5:10.  Finally, at 3:33, Santa Clara extended their lead to 2-0 on a powerful and fast rush up the ice by the forward line of Patrick Castagna, Kyle Yedlicka and Vitto Gagliardi. Castagna started the rush after a strong check behind the Blackhawks' net by Dustin Holt coughed up the puck.  Castagna made a quick move right after gaining possession to start the breakout and then passed ahead to Gagliardi. Gagliardi then hit Yedlicka with a pass into the neutral zone and Yedlicka continued the rush moving down the left side and into the slot before passing cross ice to Castagna. Castagnadidn't miss a beat, finding an opening in the middle and then making a great move to his backhand to slip the biscuit around the netminder. Devon Luna capped a strong period of goaltending with slapshot saves at 1:25 and 1:15.

Santa Clara's 2-0 lead entering the third period was still in jeopardy.  The Blackhawks took a smart penalty at 14:10 on a partial Phoenix breakaway, denying the goal, but giving the Bears a two-minute, man advantage.  At 13:30, Devon Luna made a nice glove save during the penalty kill that he quickly covered when it dropped to the ice.  Brian Quirolo followed with two big icing plays and the penalty was killed.  The Blackhawks continued to clamp down defensively and with the Bears pressing to get on the board, Santa Clara was able to get a breakaway goal the other way.  Phillip Wong won a face-off in his own zone over to Brandon Shore, who immediately fed the puck back to Dustin Holt who was positioned along the end boards.  Holt flipped a long, high pass into the neutral zone that Anthony Dragotto grabbed and took off with.  Dragotto schooled the goaltender with a fake to the backhand before sliding the disk through the five hole for the score.  The 3-0 lead at 2:43 pretty much sealed the game for the Hawks.  But they lost their shutout bid when a sharp-angle shot through a screen got under the glove of Devon LunaAnthony Dragotto got that one back on an empty netter at 0:04, with assists going to Phillip Wong and Derek Fredericks.

Santa Clara next meets the Utah Jr. Wildcats, 10-1 victims of the Boulder Bison in the first tournament game for each of those clubs.

Nine is Enough for Hawks to Overcome Miscues, 9-6
February 18, 2006
An uncharacteristically passive Santa Clara Blackhawks team showed up for Saturday night's game against the Utah Jr. Wildcats, and it nearly cost them in their quest for a AA championship banner at the Polar Bears Invitational Tournament in Phoenix.  Perhaps it was the late start (10:15 PM) or the fact that the Wildcats had lost their first game 10-1, but the Hawks' 5-2 and 6-3 leads never seemed safe.  Santa Clara was allowing the Jr. Wildcats to skate in deep and get second chances off of rebounds, and that enabled Utah to claw back to a 6-6 tie before the Blackhawks finally pulled away for good late in the third period.  The Wildcats were 4-4 on the power play, and they racked up 34 shots against the backpedaling Hawks.  Fortunately for Santa Clara, the forward line of Phillip Wong, Anthony Dragotto and Brandon Shore answered the wake-up call, scoring six of the Team's eight contested goals (the other was an empty netter) to almost single-handedly tame the Wildcats.

Anthony Dragotto scored the first two Santa Clara goals and then added single goals in the second an third periods to give him four goals for the game. Dragotto also tallied two assists to give him six points for the game.  Linesmate Brandon Shore recorded five points (one goal and four assists) and their centerman Phillip Wong pitched in with the game-winning goal and two assists.  Mitch Venosta added one goal and two assists, Jeremy Mamon and Brian Quirolo each had two helpers, and single points were chipped in by Jason Pacheco (one goal), Kyle Yedlicka (one goal), Dustin Holt (one assist), Kevin Brown (one assist) and Patrick Castagna (one assist).

After Utah rallied to tie the game 6-6 at 9:57 of the third period, Santa Clara got their act together and put the game away, and it was the Wong-Dragotto-Shore line that took charge and made it happen, with goals at 8:44 and 5:14.  The Blackhawks took a 7-6 lead when Phillip Wong one-timed a pass from behind the net by Anthony Dragotto through the five-hole for the score.  Brandon Shore added the secondary assist on the play.  Dragotto followed that up with his game-sealing, fourth goal of the contest, a hard slapshot from the right slot, assisted by Shore and Kevin Brown.

With the win, the Blackhawks clinched a spot in the playoff round.  They play the Boulder Bison tomorrow morning with the winner earning the top seed in tomorrow night's semi-final match-up, most likely against the Southern California Vipers.

Hawks Roll Over Boulder to Advance to Playoff Round
              February 19, 2006

Showing up with their "A" game, the Santa Clara Blackhawks earned straight A's for their offense, defense, goaltending, and special teams, to rock and roll the Boulder Bison, 6-0.  Santa Clara's win earns them the #1 Pool A seed in the playoff round, which starts later tonight in a semi-final match-up against the Southern California Vipers, the #2 seed in Pool B.  Phillip Wong was the offensive leader for the Blackhawks, scoring two goals and adding an assist in the Hawks' victory.  Brandon Shore, who had a 5-point game last night, had the game-winning goal today.  Kyle Yedlicka, Patrick Castagna, and Jason Pacheco also scored goals for the Blackhawks.  Dustin Holt had a playmaker performance, with three assists.  Anthony Dragotto pitched in with two assists, and Castagna and defenseman Derek Fredericks added single assists apiece.  The Blackhawks were 5-7 on the power play, and their penalty-kill effort was perfect, stopping all seven of the Wildcats' power plays after giving up four power play goals in last night's game against Utah.  Goaltender Sam Boyer was on top of his game, rejecting everything in sight on his way to a 30-save performance.  Boyer controlled his rebounds well and his defense was right there to help him when any loose change dropped to the ground, something that was not happening in last night's game.

The Blackhawks jumped all over the Bison, scoring three times in the opening period.  Their first goal came at 12:28, on the power play, after Anthony Dragotto made a nice play to hold the zone following a Phillip Wong shot.  Dragotto gained control, circled to the middle, and fired a shot on goal that dropped on the porch for Brandon Shore to punch home.  Santa Clara made it 2-0 on their second power play goal, at 4:31.  Dustin Holt sent an outlet pass to Patrick Castagna and Castagna penetrated the zone before passing cross ice to Kyle YedlickaYedlicka's sniper shot over the goaltender's glovehand was on the money, slicing into the back of the net.  Santa Clara's only even strength goal of the game came next, at 1:23, and it extended the Hawks' lead to 3-0.  This goal came at the very end of a Bison power play and it was made possible by a smart and soft pass from Dustin Holt. Holt had the presence of mind to know that the power play had expired, and instead of icing the puck when he gained control, Holt sent a soft pass off the side boards that led Patrick Castagna perfectly.  Castagna gathered it in and moved into the right slot area with room to load up on a wrist-rocket that sliced past the goaltender for the score.  The 3-0, first period lead was also made possible by heads-up goaltending from Sam BoyerBoyer made a nice pad save during a strong push up the ice by Boulder at the 8:00 mark.  He also came far out of the net to cut off an open shot from the right slot at 4:02, and Boyer then capped the period with a great glovehand snag on a shot from the center slot at 0:49.

In the second period, Santa Clara added two more power play goals.  Phillip Wong started and finished the first of those goals by winning a face-off deep in the Bison zone ahead to Anthony DragottoDragotto grabbed the biscuit behind the net and then immediately centered a pass back out front for Wong, who one-timed the pass through the netminder's five-hole for the score.  Wong's goal came at 13:32 and it was followed-up a short time later by a critical save by Sam Boyer, who alertly smothered a quick shot off a giveaway at 9:16.  Jason Pacheco was next to light the power play lamp for the Hawks, banging home a shot from Derek Fredericks that deflected off the end boards and came back out in front of the net. Dustin Holt picked up the secondary assist on the play, his third helper of the game.  Once again, Sam Boyer closed out a period with a big save, sticking aside a good scoring chance at 0:36 while the Bison were on the power play.

In a groove now, Sam Boyer made several more outstanding stops in the final period of play.  Perhaps his best denial of the game was a lightning-quick pad save at 13:32.  At 6:40, Boyer snagged and held a slapshot through traffic.  He followed that up by smothering a deflection that came off a stick right in front of him at 6:09.  Boyer finished his iceway robbery with front porch saves at 1:10 and 1:02.  Earlier in the period at 11:07, Phillip Wong scored his second goal and the Hawks' fifth power play goal, on a slapshot from the right slot 11:07.  The goal was unassisted and aided by an official who dropped the puck on a neutral-zone face-off with nobody to contest it for the Bison.  With a five-goal lead and a running clock, the zebra police evidently grew tired of waiting for the Boulder centerman to step up for the face-off.

Santa Clara now takes a few hours off before taking the ice for their semi-final game against the Vipers in another late-night affair.  The winner will face the winner of the Arapahoe vs. Boulder game, which starts about an hour before the Blackhawks and Vipers square off.

Snakebitten Hawks Stung by Vipers, Zebras in Semis, 3-1
February 19, 2006
The Santa Clara Blackhawks were derailed on their quest to reach the Polar Bears Invitational tournament championship Sunday night by the Southern California Vipers, in a closely fought, 3-1 contest.  Santa Clara led until midway through the final period, clinging to a 1-0 advantage that they took at 0:32 of the first period on a slapshot goal from defenseman Kevin Brown that came one second after a Blackhawks power play expired.  But the talented Vipers scored a wraparound goal to tie it at 7:24 of the third period, and then they notched the game winner on a perfectly place slapshot at 5:47.  Santa Clara played well and took it right to the Vipers, racking up 41 shots despite taking eight minor penalties along the way.  Some of the Blackhawks' infractions looked to be of the incidental variety, and the whistle clearly worked to the Vipers advantage all evening.  The Hawks amassed three minor penalties in the opening period and four more in the second period, which included a 1:45 five-on-three advantage for the Vipers.  Although Santa Clara killed all eight Vipers power plays, the time lost to killing penalties was time spent doing something other than generating offense.  In the end, the Hawks could not add to their lead and could not finish their shots, and the Vipers prevailed, earning a spot in tomorrow's championship game against the Boulder Bison, winners in a shootout over the Arapahoe ice Eagles..  The Blackhawks will head back to the Bay Area, where they resume their quest for NORCAL and CAHA championships.

Santa Clara's penalty troubles started just fourteen seconds into the game when they took a smart hooking minor on a near breakaway by the Vipers.  They managed to kill it with a little help from the post at 13:18, and with some big help from goaltender Devon Luna, who slid across the create to make a cat-quick rejection on a 2-on-1 right at the end of the penalty kill.  The Hawks successfully killed two more penalties in the period and then they finally earned a power play of their own at 2:33.  They would score just one second after the penalty expired after Phillip Wong dug out a puck from behind the net and then moved up around the side boards before dropping the puck down low to Anthony DragottoDragotto sent a pass out to the point where Kevin Brown fired a slapshot that produced a long rebound right back at him.  The teed-up rebound was right in Brown's wheelhouse and he hammered it into the back of the net to give the Blackhawks the 1-0 lead at 0:32.  Devon Luna then saved a teammate's bacon by covering a shot from right in front off a giveaway.

Despite taking two more penalties in the opening period, Santa Clara outshot the Vipers, 14-11.  The would outshoot the Vipers again in the second period by a 15-12 margin, while once again taking two more penalties.  At least three of the penalties that went against the Blackhawks were whistled off of open ice collisions that were ruled to be tripping infractions.  To the Blackhawks' credit, they kept their composure and killed each of the Vipers' power plays.  Early in the period, Santa Clara's Patrick Castagna generated two good scoring chances that were stopped by the Vipers' hot goaltender.  Devon Luna was in a groove himself, rejecting a 2-on-1 shot and then a great rebound chance immediately thereafter at 13:57.  Anthony Dragotto and Kyle Yedlicka both came up short on good shorthanded scoring opportunities at 6:32 and 5:17.  The Hawks then picked up back-to-back tripping penalties at 3:52 and 3:27, giving the Vipers a 1:45 five-on-three.  Santa Clara's penalty-kill unit was spectacular and Devon Luna was too, making a nifty kick save at 3:03 and then gloving a slapshot at 2:29 to give his teammates an opportunity to change up.

To the Vipers' credit, they never let up despite their troubles on the power play.  They came out of the gates strong in the third period, requiring Devon Luna to make two saves on close-range shots at 13:50.  Anthony Dragotto was denied on a partial breakaway for the Blackhawks, as was Phillip Wong on his follow-up chance at 12:20.  Back the other way, Luna delivered a great toe save at 10:55.  Then, at 7:24, the Vipers struck for a wraparound goal to tie it up.  With a crack in the Hawks' armor, the Vipers split it wide open with a rocket of a slapshot to the upper corner of the net at 5:47, and then an insurance goal from a sharp angle at 3:13.  Santa Clara battled till the end, but Vipers held on and secured a spot in tomorrow's championship game.
