| Recent and Upcoming Presentations A letter from Program Director, Nicholas Linindoll |
| September 27, 2002 Dear Supporters: First and foremost, I would like to welcome the new subscribers to the Beginning the Journey Compass mailing list. Our contacts continue to grow by leaps and bounds, and I look forward to communicating with all of you what Beginning the Journey is up to in the months to come. I would also like to remind all of you that if you are looking to schedule a presentation, if you make initial contact with us from now until the end of October, we can prepare an entirely at-cost presentation. This reduces your cost quite substantially, so we encourage you to schedule your presentation soon! Beginning the Journey had a presence at the Michigan State University LGBT Welcome Reception and Community Resource Fair for the second year. The event was a wonderful success, both for our organization and the organizers of the evening. Hopefully, this email will serve as a reminder for those of you who saw us there that Beginning the Journey is anxious to speak at MSU, and wed love to have your Hall, Student Organization, or classroom welcome us to speak at your campus. PFLAG and Church groups also expressed an interest. We look forward to working with all of you in the near future. We recently presented to several Speech 101 classes at Central Michigan University (CMU) during the diversity component of their studies. The students present returned excellent evaluations and were highly motivated to work against hate in their own lives. One student said, This is the best speaker I have ever heard. He has impacted me greatly. Currently, a CMU faculty member is working with the College of Communication and Fine Arts at the school, and is hoping to have us present to every Speech 101 class! The number of students that we could impact would be amazing since this is a required course at CMU. In addition, we are working with the Gay/Straight Alliance (GSA) at CMU to organize a presentation on campus that will be open to the public. CMUs GSA is working hard to educate the student body about diversity and the effects of hate. This presentation will be sometime in late October on CMUs campus in Mount Pleasant and will be open to the public. We will offer more information as it becomes available. Beginning the Journey recently presented to a group of foster parents for Listening Ear Crisis Center, Inc. in Mount Pleasant. The small group engaged in passionate dialogue about the importance of accepting and appreciating diversity especially as foster parents. Beginning the Journey was wonderfully received and acted as a catalyst to start a productive dialogue among the foster parents. Many approached us with contacts in the local high schools. We will continue to aim our programming at public schools in the area in an effort to reach young people with our important message of tolerance. I have also been asked to be the Keynote Speaker for the Michigan Network of Youth and Family Services Conference to be held in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, on October 29, 2002. Further information on that will follow. Perceptions, a non-profit LGBT Social and Political group serving the Mid-Michigan Area has also requested a Beginning the Journey Presentation as a part of their meeting on November 21, 2002, in Midland, Michigan. If you would like further information on this, please contact us at [email protected]. So right when we think things are slowing down, they seem to pick right back up. We appreciate your continued support and look forward to meeting with you in the future. If you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact us.
