clan and family list
clan family description
Crab Hida Led by the Great Bear, Hida Kisada, and his son Yakamo who are the pillars of the clan.  They are derived from the Kami, Hida, strongest of his kin.  They swore to always defend the Empire.  They are unswerving in their positions on the Kaiu Wall.
Hiruma The trajic family of the Crab.  The Shadowlands forces took their home in the year 716 and they will not rest until it is reclaimed.  Because they are homeless, they have lost much of their skills but the other clans have shown them pity and offer to retrain their people.  They often scout the Shadowlands looking for weaknesses.
Kuni The shugenga of this family finally decided to study the ways of the Shadowlands in the never-ending war.  Led by their Daimyo, Kuni Yori, they are merciless in their torture of the evil creatures.  Not many understand their practices.
Kaiu The greatest architects in Rokugan.  They built the great Kaiu Wall in 716, the defense against the Shadowlands.
Yasuka The greatest shame of the Crane Clan, the Yasuki left to join the Crab in the year 387 as sympathizers.  Often thought as of smugglers and cutt-throats, they are also most qualified as Crab diplomats as all other Crab families must fight the good fight.
Crane Doji First family of the Crane from the Kami, Lady Doji, most beautiful and political of her kin.  She was seduced by the great duelist Kakita.  The Doji brought the written language to the Empire.  They now are the left hand of the Emporer in the court and are dispised for their polical prowess.  They also hold onto the greatest polical poisiton, The Emerald Champion, currently occupied the Doji Susaru.
Daidoji They do the dirty jobs the rest of the Crane will not do.  They are completely loyal to the Crane and will resort to subterfuge to ensure the Crane's safety.  The Crab refer to them as the "Iron Crane" after the battle of Land Bridge in 715.
Kakita Artisan family.  Greatest duelist (iaijutsu) and school of the Empire.  Kakita, the founder, married the Kami Doji.  Currently led by Kakita Yoshi.  His half brother is the legendary Toshimoko who is well past his years but a friendly man.
Asahina Spiritual centers of the Crane.  They are pacifists (unless against the Shadowlands).  They create items (art) of great magic and beauty.
Dragon Togashi The Kami Togashi decided to lead a life of contemplation in the ways of Shinsei.  His followers became the Dragon Clan.  Devoit monks of this family, the Ise Zumi, or tatooed monks, devote their lives following the teachings of Shinsei.  The Dragon hold many mysteries.  The two main followers of Togashi were Mirumoto and Agasha.
Mirumoto Mirumoto was the yojimbo (bodyguard of Togashi).  He devoted his life to this purpose as do all of his family and developed the way of niten (two-sword technique) often seen dishonorable especially by the Crane.
Agasha Agasha was the other original follower of Togashi and worked closely with Mirumoto.  He develeloped a special form of alcomy (magic).  They are well respected throughout Rokugan.
Lion Akodo First family of the Kami, Akodo "One Eye" who fell in love with the Lady Matsu who fought beside him.  They study the ways of tacticians and form the right arm of the Emporer, his great army.  Akodo wrote the book "Leadership".  Although unbeatable on the field, they are often defeated by the Crane in the courts.  The current Daimyo, Akodo Toturi, is considered one of the greatest strategists ever!
Matsu Known for their rage and bravery, the Matsu will always be read to charge into battle.  Matsu Tsuko leads with a ferocious passion although she does not agree with Akodo Toturi's decisions.  The Matsu will defend the Emporer at all costs.
Ikoma The are considered the historians of the Empire.  They have the original book of "Leadership" written by the Kami Akodo and huge records of lineages.  They are also great ambassidors and story tellers of famous Lion decendents.
Kitsu The Kitsu find strength through their ancestors (even more than most Lions).  They are considered very traditional and old-fashioned.  The shugenga school rejects all other clans due to their lack of respect (as they see it) for the ancestors.
Phoenix Shiba First family of the Kami Shiba and the only major bushi school of the clan.  Shiba studied the words of Shinsei (and recorded them).  Unlike other Kami decendent families of the clans, the Shiba do not rule the Pheonix but instead swear to defend the will of the Isawa Elemental Masters.  It is said that the champion of the Shiba family is bestowed with the wisdom of the champions before him.  Shiba Ujimitsu, a wise leader, is the current Daimyo.
Isawa Greatest shugenga schools.  Home to the five Elemental Masters, actual rulers of the Pheonex Clan.  All of Rokugan respect the knowledge this family holds.  The Isawa library is considered the greatest in the land.  Many other clans desire to send their children with mystic powers to the schools here.
Asako Enigmatic mystics that gave rise to a group called the Henshin.  The Henshin are said to know the secrets of immortality.  Traveling with an Asako is said to be very lucky.
Scorpion Bayushi First family of the Kami Bayushi.  The 1st Hantei asked Bayushi to do the jobs no other Kami would be willing to do for the Empire and it is with this vow that made Bayushi the most trusted of the kin.  It is said that a Bayushi will always talk partially in lies and that they hold secrets known only to themselves.  The current Daimyo, Bayushi Shoju and his wife Kachiko are both respected and feared.  His troops are fiercly loyal.
Shosuro When Bayushi searched for cunning followers, Shosuro was the 1st to join.  They are said to be masters of disguise and that they may have spies in every Clan and perhaps even the Emporer's palace called "The Grass".
Soshi Mysics that specialize in illusions and confusion.  They are taught to respect their leader more than the Kami's and Tao of Shinsei.
Yogo The 1st Yogo hated Bayushi although he was loyal to the Clan.  It was also proficised that the Yogo family would betray the ones they love.  It was for this reason that Bayushi entrusted Yogo with the 12 Black Scrolls of Fu Leng from the first Day of Thunder.  This family is now dedicated to solving the secrets of the Shadowlands using their dark magics.  Yogo Junzo currently leads this family.
Unicorn Shinjo First family of the Kami Shinjo who traveled into the unknown lands for Rokugan's knowledge of the surrounding dangers.  He and his Clan disappeared for 800 years.  Those that stayed became the Fox Clan (Miner Clan).  Upon return, the Unicorns were met with hostility at the Kaio Wall but were finally accepted back into the land.  They are considered the great travelers.  Shinjo Yokatsu leads as Daimyo and Master of the Four Winds.
Ide Ide follow the philosophy "the house of the peaceful warrior".  They both practice the "barbaric customs of the Unicorn Clan and the ways of the court.  They are also the first to flaunt the Unicorns discovered wealths.
Iuchi Iuchi are keepers of the Unicorn religious traditions, a mix of Rokugani and gaijin beliefs.  They are rare to accept outsiders to their school and remain fairly secretive.  They are also called "Masters of the Stables".
Moto Founders of this family are not Rokugani…they are barbarians that swore feality to Shinjo during their travels.  They have great skill in combat if not traditional.  An offshoot of this family known as the Black Guard is hunted due to taint.  It is said, no Motos are free of taint.
Otaku Only samurai-ko may join this school using the finest horses in Rokugan, the most prized possessions of the Unicorn.  Others of this family often join other families.  They are trained to be bold and headstrong.  None can compare to their riding skills.  Otaku Kamoko leads this family...a name passed generation to generation.
ronin wave samurai Masterless samurai.  Sometimes they form bands.  Must be from the province of a Clan.
minor clans Mantis Clan Led by the Yoritomo family.  The greatest miner clan.  Best sailors and merchants of Rokugan.  They have the support of the other Miner Clans and attempt to one day become a Great Clan.  They were an offshoot of the Crab Clan.  Favored weapons are not swords but farming tools.  Often mercenaries.  Once you buy one they will be totally loyal to you until the task is done.
Badger Clan Led by the Ichiro family.  Originating from the Crab Hida family, they defend the northern Burning Sands pass (where Shinjo and the Ki-rin left) from gaijin although a need has never been observed.  It is said, they are more like the original Crab Clan before the Kaio Wall.
Wasp Clan Greatest archers in Rokugan.  They are a small but elite army and are often hired as mercenaries by the richer clans…especially the Crane.  They often leave the ways of bushido.
Falcon Clan Students of the occult.  They hunt the strange demons of the Shadowlands and Shinomen Forest.  Unlike the Crab's Kuni Witch Hunters, they do not always kill their prey.
Fox Clan Led by the Kitsune family.  When Shinjo took his clan to explore the lands surrounding Rokugan, those that stayed were renamed the Fox Clan and became "The Children" of the Emporer.  They have deep understanding of the Kami and nature and became the official historians of the Emporer's word for when their parent Shinjo's Clan returned.
Dragonfly Clan Tonbo family.  They carry both Pheonix and Dragon Clan blood.  They often serve as mediators in Clan disputes.
Sparrow Clan Suzume family.  An offshoot of the Crane.  They live the lives of honorable poverty.  They guard the Golden Sun Plain, lush farmland left untouched by Emperial edict.  Their own lands are extremely poor.
Centipede Clan Moshi family.  Devout worshippers of Lady Sun.  As praise to the mother of the Emporer they were giving Miner Clan status.
Tortoise Clan Kasuga family.  A very small clan.  They serve as diplomats and couriers for the Emporer to gaijin.  Since they travel, they are able to act as smugglers and spies for the Emporer.
Imperial families Seppun Lady Seppun was the first human to swear loyalty to the Emporer even before his kin.  She was said to have heard the voice of Lady Sun.  The Seppun family is the royal guards of the Emporer and answer to no Clan.  They control the secret police called the Shinsei Gumi, ruthless killers.
Miya Miya serve as heralds of the Emporer's word.  Where the Otomo keep the Clans warring to weaken them, the Miya bring peace and laws.  They also make sure no Clan becomes so weak that they cannot defend their Emporer.
Otomo The Otomo carry the law of the Emporer to the Clans.  They watch and report only to the Emporer.  Often bribes ease the diplomacy of this family and they in turn look down on other families.
