Painful Partings

My hand strays to feel my strong heartbeat

And also what nestled nearby, my precious gift

It was a band of gold with a single ruby

I will ask her to let me be her hubby

Tonight her smile looks strained, perhaps it was a long day

But why are her eyes downcast? why does she not have something to say?

Alas! how was I to know that if she were to speak

My world will crash with nothing left but a future bleak

At the fatal moment she did not linger

And before my ring found a way onto her finger

She dealt me a blow that we could be together no more

Six years of togetherness and suddenly this ! I was floored !

I felt her drifting away, helpless to stop her

Was too stunned, just watched her go without a murmur

She left behind a legacy of words that would haunt me for life

"Why? Dear God, what have I done to deserve such strife?"
