The province of NWFP possesses oldest regions of Pakistan and district Hangu is one amongst them. In the past Hangu was a sub-divisional head quarter of the Kohat district. It has seen many ups and downs in history. It has remained under various rulers but throughout the period it was the seat of the Khans of Hangu who ruled this area for a period of three hundred years (L.White King, The Orakzai Country & Clans. P. 144) prior to the British rule. The British then made it a tehsil in 1903. Afterwards on June 30,1996, it was upgraded to the status of an administrative district.
