Games and Sports: The games and sports are essential elements for physical development and fitness and also contribute a lot as an integral part to any society. Being Pukhtoons, the people of Hangu have a natural fondness for field sports and some traditional games like hunting, Skhi (holding up one foot in one hand and hopping on one leg against an opponent), Pataghuni (hide and seek), Chindo ( a form of hop-scotch) especially for girls, hawking, Adi-Kothak ( a game, played with sticks), cocks fighting, dogs fighting and also of some birds like Bater (quail) Sinzare (partridge) etc. exist in this area.
With the exception of these
traditional and local games, other games such as cricket, football, badminton
and volleyball are the most dominant games played throughout the district.
Volleyball is mostly played in the surrounding villages while cricket, football
and badminton are the most favourite games of the main town’s people as well as
of the villagers. Big tournaments are
arranged of which the most important and big one is the captain Atif memorial football tournament (the
late son of the ex-governor of N.W.F.P, Arif Bangash) annually arranged in
which all players and teams of the whole province participate. Cricket is a dominant game of all and is played
by a large majority throughout the year, while football and volleyball are
seasonal (winter) games.
