| What is
community building? By John Lynch
'Community building' is a group process model
developed by the best selling author M.
Scott Peck and has an established base of practitioners and facilitators
around the world. Peck wrote about 'community building' in his book 'The
Different Drum' and it really helps to read that book. Jerry
Hampton's web-site is useful too.
But an
intellectual description can only go so far when trying to explain the
unexplainable. To understand how community can be invited into a group you
have to experience the process. I'll try and write about it all the same.
I came to this work because I felt lonelier and more disconnected
from people than I wanted to be. I wanted more meaningful ways to be
myself in a group – to be seen and heard as I truly am.
In community
building, we have an
intention to invite community into our group. We have a circle of chairs.
We have a list of things that help and some things that we know about
group work.
We have a facilitator. We value space, silence and good
listening.
Everyone brings
their joys, sorrows, sufferings and laughter.
Whatever brings us together - we share an experience of building a
community – and that is what matters. We learn – by doing it.

If after reading this, you don't fully understand - don't worry, the only
way to truly learn about this practice is to experience it - and that is
our invitation. |
