
The manufacturing and engineering industries have responded to changes in the law and to increased community concerns in regard to the effect of their operations on the environment. Emissions released to the atmosphere and to waterways have been drastically reduced and waste material used for landfill has also been virtually eliminated. The manufacturing and engineering industries have always been aware of the economic benefits of recycling of waste such as scrap metal but the efforts on recycling are now extended to almost all waste produced in the manufacturing processes. Many enterprises have put a lot of effort into the "greening" of their sites including planting of trees surrounding their factory buildings and creation of garden areas.
