John Clellon Holmes was born on March 12th, 1926 in Holyoke, Massachusetts. He and Jack Kerouac met when in New York City, and became great friends upon discovering each other's interest in writing. In 1948 upon asking Kerouac how he would diescribe his generation, Kerouac coined the phrase the "Beat Generation," at this point beginning the infamous literary movement. Holmes first and most famous work was published four years later, "Go." He married and settled down in Old Saybrook, Connecticut. He and Kerouac remained very good friends until Kerouac's death (in 1969). Holmes died on March 2nd, 1988 in Middleton, Connecticut.
