| The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| What if you found out that the Greek Gods of ancient mythology were real and still alive? What if your math teacher was sent by Hades to track you down? Percy Jackson finds himself in this situation and doesn't even know why he's the target. Rick Riordan, the author of The Lightning Thief, combines ancient Greek Mythology with modern times to create an exciting fantasy story. Like all good Greek Myths, Percy must go on a quest to keep the gods from breaking out in war. The problem is that he must complete the quest in 10 days, and to do it, he has to solve the riddle the Oracle gives him and make his way through the Underworld ruled by Hades! Rick Riordan does a good job of combining the powerful, imposing characters of the Greek gods with modern day people and places that seem very realistic. This book is exciting from beginning to end! The Lightning Thief is a must read for anyone who loves fantasy, adventure, mystery and stories about average kids who have to do extraordinary things! This is the first book in a series of five. The second book, The Sea of Monsters, is already published with the third scheduled to be published in early 2007. |

| Math Challenge | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Here's the math challenge for the summer. Enjoy! A boy has some blocks, whistles and rubber balls. He is trying to determine their relative weights. This is what he knows so far: 4 balls and 5 whistles weigh the same as 5 balls and 3 whistles. 3 balls and 2 whistles weigh the same as 2 blocks. How many whistles does it take to equal the weight of one block? |

| Answer to May, 2006 Math Challenge: Were you able to walk through your piece of paper? Did you do what I did the first few times and try to cut a hole out of the middle of the paper and step through without ripping it? Here's the answer to the trick - and there are no scraps of paper to clean up when you're done! Fold your paper in half, lengthwise then fold it in half cross-wise. Keep folding it crosswise until you have 16 sections. Press the folds so that you can see the creases easily, and then unfold the paper until it is back to being folded one time lengthwise again. Starting at one end, cut on the first crease from the center fold along the crease but stop about 1/2 inch from the edge of the paper. On the next crease, cut from the other side (the open side) along the crease toward the fold and stop 1/2 inch from the fold. Keep switching the directions of your cuts so that they alternate in direction. The last cut you make should go from the fold to within 1/2 inch of the side. Now, leaving the end strips intact and still folded, cut through the center fold line down all the rest of the strips. Now carefully open up the string of paper and if you cut correctly, you should have a very large loop of paper through which you can easily step. |
