The Golden Goblet
by Eloise Jarvis McGraw
Ranofer's future does not look bright. He is a hired worker at a goldsmith shop in Ancient Egypt. His father, an excellent goldsmith and a good man, is dead. Now Ranofer lives with his evil step-brother, Gebu. Gebu will not permit Ranofer to become apprenticed to a goldsmith as their father had planned. Instead, Ranofer lives like a slave at his step-brother's house and is the lowest servant at the gold shop.
Soon, the goldsmith where Ranofer works discovers that gold is being stolen from his shop. Ranofer immediately suspects the Babylonian worker and his own step-brother! The Babylonian has regularly given Ranofer wineskins to deliver to his step-brother. Gebu never drinks that wine! Ranofer has seen Gebu sneak around in the middle of the night to dump out the wine! Has Ranofer unknowingly been helping them commit a crime?
Ranofer decides to get to the bottom of the crime, even though it will put him in great danger. He gets help from some unlikely friends, but none of them realize that there is more to this thieving than meets the eye!
If you like stories about Ancient Egypt, mysteries or adventures,
The Golden Goblet is a must read book for you!

Monthly Math Challenge
Here's the January math challenge about a New Year's party:

I am having a New Year's party. I have twice as many noise makers as guests. The number of rattlers is 5 less than the guests I have. The number of balloons is half the number of party hats. There are 5 more party hats than guests. The number of streamers is the same as the number of rattlers plus the number of balloons. Total, there are 74 rattlers and party hats.

How many guests, hats, noise makers, streamers, balloons and rattlers are there?
Answer to December Math Challenge:

Mr. Donald should have answered "three." There are
three letters in the word "ten"!
