| Tripping Over the Lunch Lady edited by Nancy Mercado |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Always miss the bus? Ever been made to do a project with the quietest kid, the class joker, or "Miss Perfect?" These are just a few problems that kids face in this hilarious collection of easy to read, short stories. One of my favorite stories from the book is "Apple Blossoms" by Terry Trueman. The story is about Jason, who sees himself as the class clown. He does everything from walking like a gorilla to acting like a thousand-year-old man. He loves having everyone, including the teacher, laugh at him. The teacher even encourages him to perform "skits" for the class! For the next class assignment, each student must give an oral interpretation of a poem about war. Jason realizes this isn't a funny subject, and he sets out to find the easiest, shortest poem he can. Since he thinks it is easy, he doesn't even bother to practice. When the day of the oral reading arrives, Jason suddenly wishes he had practiced more. As Jason begins reciting, an unfamiliar feeling of being nervous causes him to mess up. The class thinks it is all a typical Jason joke! Jason doesn't find it funny, and neither does his teacher! |

| I liked this book because it has a collection of well-known authors' stories about being a kid at school. All the stories are written in the first person, but they are not necessarily true stories about the author At the end of each story, the author answers a few questions about his or her own life at school. I found myself laughing out loud while reading this book. This is an excellent book for those of you who face the daily adventures of school, and even if you are homeschooled, you will find these experiences funny. I'm sure that, like me, you will want to read it over and over! | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Monthly Math Challenge | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| In math, I've been reviewing factors, multiples, primes, etc. (hint). Here's the math challenge for you this month. Good luck! Mr. Bob owns the longest hotel. It houses 1,000 people, including Mr. Bob and his staff. There are 1,000 light bulbs with pull string switches in a long line down the hall. Mr. Bob has numbered all the lights from 1 to 1,000. He has lined up all the people at the hotel and given them a number from 1 to 1,000 to play this game. When the game starts, all the lights in the hall are off. The first person walks down the hall and turns on all the lights. Then the 2nd person starts at light bulb number 2 and pulls the switches of every other light, thereby turning them off. Then the third person starts at light #3 and pulls the switches on every 3rd light, turning some off and putting others back on. The 4th person will start at light bulb #4 and pull every 4th string; the 5th person at light bulb #5, pulling every 5th string, and so on until every person has had a turn. When all 1,000 people have gone, which lights will be left on? Please e-mail me when you think you have the answer, or if you want a hint! |
