COSETTE FAUCHELEVANT
the good things: - she did manage to get Marius. There has to be something in that... Basically, she's beautiful and has a nice smile. - she can deal with the fact that she's fallen madly in love with this guy, he has fallen madly in love with her, and her dad's gonna make her move to a completely different country, and dreamboy can't go with her - she has something resembling a brain, at least enough of one to be curious, and to figure out that her beloved father might not quite be everything he pretends to be... - Eponine beat on her when she was a kid, and it gave her a tough outer shell, so she can deal with it when things go wrong - Valjean loves her... he's gotta have a reason... - she really does love Marius and Valjean, so she's got emotions - she's got hopes, dreams, and aspirations for the future (basically, she's optimistic) - she's a lark, not a dove, as Victor Hugo put it - she's not really snobby to the poor poeple (like young Eponine was to young Cosette), and actually helps Valjean out in his charitable efforts. the bad things: - she flirts shamelessly with Marius' cousin when he rides by on a well-groomed horse - she's rather vain: she looks at herself in the mirrionr, realizes she's pretty, and buy sherself a whole new wardrobe - she appears rather nonchalant when Marius kicks Valjean out of the house (in the book)
EPONINE THENARDIER
the good things: - she looks out for his kid sister, Azelma - she saves Marius' life by sacrificing her own - she's got guts (not to mention she's the only girl in the story who wears pants) - she's quite intelligent for a street rat - she's loveable because nobody except the audience will love her the bad things: - she's a self-centered, obsessive, and very scruffy gamine, a liar, and a thief - nobody likes her very much... they've probably got reasons - she's got suicidal tendancies, and her saving Marius' life was an excuse to get herself killed so she wouldn't have to deal with her awful life anymore - she's pessimistic - when she was little, she beat Cosette up - she doesn't bathe very often - she doesn't deliver Cosette's letter to Marius, making him believe that Cosette doesn't love him anymore, and eventually causing him to attempt suicide (by threatening to blow up the barricade, himself, and Les Amis) - she attempts to break up Marius and Cosette by trying to get Valjean to move to England - disguised as a boy, she gets Marius to go to the barricade, so he'll die, because if she can't have him, no one will (but eventually changes her mind and saves his life)
What I think: Eponine is definitely better. But here's what others have to say: "[Eponine's just so much better! Would Cosette have died for Marius?!" ~ JM "Ok. Cosette is cute. But in the musical, she has absolutely no character! Her only function is to love Marius. In the book her character is much deeper. I LIKE COSETTE!" ~ Eponinenkind "Eponine is my favorite because in the later part of the story, it seems like Cosette gets everything she wants and Eponine has nothing." ~ Meredyth "Cosette is borrrrrrrrring. She seems a shallow character. Ep has drama. I like that." ~ dani "I love Eponine, but she's NOT the angel people try to make her! Sure, she saved Marius' life, but it was BECAUSE of her that she had to save it in the first place! ...People say that Cosette's a spoiled brat who gets whatever she wants... I don't call living in a convent, isolated from everyone, throughout your teenager years spoiled." ~ Pixie_gav24601 "Look at young Eponine and adult Cosette, both at times in their lives when they had everything they wanted. Cosette wasn't a brat about it. Cosette wins." ~ happy hobo "I can't stand [Cosette]. She gest everything she wants, and [Eponine] gets nothing. I like drama, and that's [Eponine]. Plus, [Eponine]'s got a cool hat." ~ kt "I like Cosette! She gets way more put down than she deserves! So she's niave. Jean Valjean does all he can to keep her away from the world, how could she not be??" ~ Stephanie "Eponine seems pretty shallow and self-centered, while Cosette, on the other hand, is a good role-model." ~ Snipeshooter "Cosette is delightful, truly. I love her to death. But Eponine is symbolic of a whole class of people that routinely get screwed over, and ya gotta love symbolism. Also, she's a bit mad, which is always fun." ~ Caitlin "They each faced hardship. Cosette: she was given to evil people at such a tender age. She was beaten and was a maid. Ponine: she spent years on the street made her way through, even though her father disowned her after she gave them away at Rue Plumet." ~ Bella "Cosette is the better of the two in their younger days, but when they get older, I prefer Eponine. I guess my heart just goes out to whoever needs someone to love them. Eponine plays a bigger role in the play, and she has the most beautiful and sad songs. ~ Caity "Why don't you give Little Cosette credit? She is a big part of the story. If it were not for her Thenardier would not remember Valjean. If he did not then there would not be any Attack on Rue Plumet (which is Thenardier's revenge for taking lil Cosette)." ~ beayla "[Eponine] is a much more dynamic characer than Cosette, and is also a tragic character. I love her!" ~ Maki "Cosette bothers me. Her personality, so fresh initially, seems to drain away near the end. Truth be told, I don't really like either of them." ~ Tay-kun "I don't hate Cosette, but she never doesANYTHING interesting. I love Ponine, she's so brave and crazy!" ~ Maddie
