So I stuck on a couple wires and plugged in the USB connector.  As seen above the device was detected by XP immediately. The fact that it isn't a keyboard will keep it separate from your other settings in MAME.
  Then I started up notepad and started touching!  Making a perfect row of zeros.
I figured with a bit of preparation and planning I could ensure that the joystick matches the arrow keys on the keypad.
  Then I thought again, thinking "why bother"
  This hardware test proved my theory and paved the way for a grueling six hour soldering session.
