Matthew 4:17
From
that time Jesus began to preach
and to say, “Repent, for the kingdom
of heaven is at hand.”
- Jesus preached that everyone should repent.
Matthew 11:20-24
Then
He began to rebuke the cities in
which most of His mighty works had been done, because they did not
repent: “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For
if the
mighty works which were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon,
they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. But I
say to you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the day of
judgment than for you. And you, Capernaum, who are exalted to
heaven, will be brought down to Hades; for if the mighty works which
were done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until
this day. But I say to you that it shall be more tolerable for
the land of Sodom in the day of judgment than for you.”
- Jesus rebuked the cities in which most of His mighty works
had
been done, because they did not repent.
Matthew 12:41
The men of Nineveh will rise up in the
judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at
the preaching of Jonah; and indeed a greater than Jonah is here.
Matthew 21:28-32
“But
what do you think? A man had two
sons, and he came to the first and said, ‘Son, go, work today in my
vineyard.’ He answered and said, ‘I
will not,’ but afterward he
regretted it and went. Then he came to the second and said
likewise. And he answered and said, ‘I go, sir,’ but he did not
go. Which of the two did the will of his father?” They said to
Him, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you that tax
collectors and harlots enter the kingdom of God before you. For
John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe
him; but tax collectors and harlots believed him; and when you saw it,
you did not afterward relent and believe him.
- In the above parable, the first son refused to work in the
vineyard when his father told him to, but afterward the son repented
and went. By repenting, the son did the will of his father.
Mark 1:15
and
saying, “The time is fulfilled, and
the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent,
and believe in the gospel.”
- Jesus gives the commandment to repent and believe in the
gospel.
Mark 6:12
So
they went out and preached that
people should repent.
- The twelve apostles were sent out by Jesus and they
preached that
people should repent.
Luke 13:1-9
There
were present at that season some
who told Him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with
their sacrifices. And Jesus answered and said to them, “Do you
suppose that these Galileans were worse sinners than all other
Galileans, because they suffered such things? I tell you, no; but
unless you repent you will all
likewise perish. Or those eighteen
on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them, do you think that
they were worse sinners than all other men who dwelt in
Jerusalem? I tell you, no; but unless
you repent you will all
likewise perish.”
He also spoke this parable: “A
certain man had a fig tree planted in
his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it and found none.
Then he said to the keeper of his vineyard, ‘Look, for three years I
have come seeking fruit on this fig tree and find none. Cut it down;
why does it use up the ground?’ But he answered and said to him,
‘Sir, let it alone this year also, until I dig around it and fertilize
it. And if it bears fruit, well. But if not, after that you can
cut it down.’”
- Jesus preached that all those who do not repent will perish.
Luke 15
The Parable of the Lost
Sheep
Then all the tax collectors and
the sinners drew near to Him to hear
Him. And the Pharisees and scribes complained, saying, “This Man
receives sinners and eats with them.” So He spoke this parable to
them, saying: “What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he loses one
of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after
the one which is lost until he finds it? And when he has found
it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he comes
home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them,
‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost!’ I
say to you that likewise there will
be more joy in heaven over one
sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons who need no
repentance.
The Parable
of the Lost Coin
“Or what woman, having ten
silver coins, if she loses one coin, does
not light a lamp, sweep the house, and search carefully until she finds
it? And when she has found it, she calls her friends and
neighbors together, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the
piece which I lost!’ Likewise, I say to you, there is joy in the
presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”
The Parable
of the Lost Son
Then He said: “A certain man
had two sons. And the younger of
them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the portion of goods that
falls to me.’ So he divided to them his livelihood. And not many
days after, the younger son gathered all together, journeyed to a far
country, and there wasted his possessions with prodigal living.
But when he had spent all, there arose a severe famine in that land,
and he began to be in want. Then he went and joined himself to a
citizen of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed
swine. And he would gladly have filled his stomach with the pods
that the swine ate, and no one gave him anything. “But when he came to
himself, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have bread
enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger! I will arise and
go to my father, and will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against
heaven and before you, and I am no longer worthy to be called
your son. Make me like one of your hired servants.”’ “And he
arose and came to his father. But when he was still a great way off,
his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and
kissed him. And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned
against heaven and in your sight, and am no longer worthy to be called
your son.’ “But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring
out the
best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and sandals on
his feet. And bring the fatted calf here and kill it, and let us
eat and be merry; for this my son was dead and is alive again; he
was lost and is found.’ And they began to be merry. “Now his
older son was in the field. And as he came and drew near to the house,
he heard music and dancing. So he called one of the servants and
asked what these things meant. And he said to him, ‘Your brother
has come, and because he has received him safe and sound, your father
has killed the fatted calf.’ “But he was angry and would not go
in. Therefore his father came out and pleaded with him. So he
answered and said to his father, ‘Lo, these many years I have been
serving you; I never transgressed your commandment at any time; and yet
you never gave me a young goat, that I might make merry with my
friends. But as soon as this son of yours came, who has devoured
your livelihood with harlots, you killed the fatted calf for
him.’ “And he said to him, ‘Son, you are always with me, and all
that I have is yours. It was right that we should make merry and
be glad, for your brother was dead and is alive again, and was lost and
is found.’”
- In the parable of the lost sheep Jesus states, “there will be
more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine
just persons who need no repentance.”
- In the parable of the lost coin Jesus states, “there is joy in
the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”
- In the parable of the lost son, the father joyfully
accepted the
return of his lost son.
Luke 24:44-47
Then
He said to them, “These are the
words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things
must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the
Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me.” And He opened their
understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures. Then He
said to them, “Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the
Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, and
that repentance and remission of sins
should be preached in His name to
all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
- Jesus taught that
repentance and remission of sins should be
preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
Acts 2:36-41
After Peter preached about Jesus
to a
multitude in Jerusalem, those in the multitude were cut to the heart
and asked Peter and the disciples what they should do. Peter said
to them, “Repent, and let every one of
you be baptized in the name of
Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift
of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is to you and to your
children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will
call". And with many other words he testified and exhorted
them, saying, “Be saved from this perverse generation.” Then
those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about
three thousand souls were added to them.
- Repentance precedes baptism.
- Believers who repent and
are baptized will receive the gift of
the Holy Spirit.
Acts 8:9-24
But
there was a certain man called
Simon, who previously practiced sorcery in the city and astonished the
people of Samaria, claiming that he was someone great, to whom
they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, “This man
is the great power of God.” And they heeded him because he had
astonished them with his sorceries for a long time. But when they
believed Philip as he preached the things concerning the kingdom of God
and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized.
Then Simon himself also believed; and when he was baptized he continued
with Philip, and was amazed, seeing the miracles and signs which were
done. Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that
Samaria had received the word of God, they sent Peter and John to
them, who, when they had come down, prayed for them that they
might receive the Holy Spirit. For as yet He had fallen upon none
of them. They had only been baptized in the name of the Lord
Jesus. Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy
Spirit. And when Simon saw that through the laying on of the
apostles’ hands the Holy Spirit was given, he offered them money,
saying, “Give me this power also, that anyone on whom I lay hands may
receive the Holy Spirit.” But Peter said to him, “Your money
perish with you, because you thought that the gift of God could be
purchased with money! You have neither part nor portion in this
matter, for your heart is not right in the sight of God. Repent
therefore of this your wickedness, and pray God if perhaps the thought
of your heart may be forgiven you. For I see that you are
poisoned by bitterness and bound by iniquity.” Then Simon
answered and said, “Pray to the Lord for me, that none of the things
which you have spoken may come upon me.”
- Peter told Simon to repent after Simon tried to offer money
for
the power to impart the Holy Spirit by the laying on of hands.
Acts 9:32-35
Now
it came to pass, as Peter went
through all parts of the country, that he also came down to the saints
who dwelt in Lydda. There he found a certain man named Aeneas,
who had been bedridden eight years and was paralyzed. And Peter
said to him, “Aeneas, Jesus the Christ heals you. Arise and make your
bed.” Then he arose immediately. So all who dwelt at Lydda and
Sharon saw him and turned to the Lord.
- After Aeneas was healed, all
who dwelt at Lydda and Sharon saw
him and turned to the Lord.
Acts 17:29-31
Therefore,
since we are the offspring
of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold or
silver or stone, something shaped by art and man’s devising.
Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all
men everywhere to repent, because He has appointed a day on which
He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has
ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him
from the
dead.”
- God now commands all men
everywhere to repent, because He has
appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by
the Man whom He has ordained.
Acts 26:16-20
But
rise and stand on your feet; for I
have appeared to you for this purpose, to make you a minister and a
witness both of the things which you have seen and of the things which
I will yet reveal to you. I will deliver you from the Jewish
people, as well as from the Gentiles, to whom I now send you, to
open their eyes, in order to turn them from darkness to light, and from
the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins
and an inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith in
Me.’ “Therefore, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the
heavenly vision, but declared
first to those in Damascus and in
Jerusalem, and throughout all the region of Judea, and then to the
Gentiles, that they should repent, turn to God, and do works befitting
repentance.
- Paul preached to those in Damascus, Jerusalem, throughout all the
region of Judea, and then to the Gentiles that they should repent, turn
to God, and do works befitting repentance.
2 Corinthians
7:8-11
For
even if I made you sorry with my
letter, I do not regret it; though I did regret it. For I perceive that
the same epistle made you sorry, though only for a while. Now I
rejoice, not that you were made sorry, but that your sorrow led to
repentance. For you were made sorry in a godly manner, that you
might
suffer loss from us in nothing. For
godly sorrow produces
repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the
sorrow of
the world produces death. For observe this very thing, that you
sorrowed in a godly manner: What diligence it produced in you, what
clearing of yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what vehement
desire, what zeal, what vindication! In all things you proved
yourselves to be clear in this matter.
- Godly sorrow produces
repentance leading to salvation. This
statement hints the fact that salvation succeeds repentance.
Colossians 3
If then you
were raised with Christ,
seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the
right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things
on the earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ
in God. When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will
appear with Him in glory. Therefore put to death your members which are
on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and
covetousness, which is idolatry. Because of these things the
wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience, in which you
yourselves once walked when you lived in them. But now you
yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy,
filthy language out of your mouth. Do not lie to one another,
since you have put off the old man with his deeds, and have put on the
new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who
created him, where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcised nor
uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave nor free, but Christ is all
and in all. Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put
on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing
with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint
against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do.
But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of
perfection. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to
which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. Let the
word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and
admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,
singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatever you
do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks
to God the Father through Him. Wives, submit to your own
husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives
and do not be bitter toward them. Children, obey your parents in
all things, for this is well pleasing to the Lord. Fathers, do
not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged.
Bondservants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh,
not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but in sincerity of heart,
fearing God. And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord
and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward
of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ. But he who
does wrong will be repaid for what he has done, and there is no
partiality.
2 Peter 3:9
The
Lord is not slack concerning His
promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not
willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.
- The Lord wants everyone to come to repentance to avoid
perishing.
1 John 1
That
which was from the beginning,
which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have
looked upon, and our hands have handled, concerning the Word of life—
the life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and
declare to you that eternal life which was with the Father and was
manifested to us— that which we have seen and heard we declare to you,
that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is
with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ. And these things
we write to you that your joy may be full. This is the message
which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and
in Him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship
with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the
truth. But if we walk in
the light as He is in the light, we have
fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son
cleanses us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin,
we
deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our
sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us
from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we
make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.
- God is light and in Him
is no darkness at all.
- If we say that we have
fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness,
we lie and do not practice the truth.
- If we walk in the light as He
is in the light, we have fellowship
with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us
from all sin.
Revelation 2:5
Remember
therefore from where you have
fallen; repent and do the first
works, or else I will come to you
quickly and remove your lampstand from its place—unless you repent.
- Jesus commands the church at Ephesus to repent and do the first
works, or he will come to them quickly and remove their lamp
stand from
it’s place.
Revelation 2:16
Repent, or else I will
come to you
quickly and will fight against them with the sword of My mouth.
- Jesus commands the church in Pergamos to repent or he will
come
to them quickly and will fight against those who hold the doctrine of
Balaam with the sword of His mouth.
Revelation
2:20-22
Nevertheless
I have a few things
against you, because you allow that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a
prophetess, to teach and seduce My servants to commit sexual immorality
and eat things sacrificed to idols. And I gave her time to repent
of her sexual immorality, and she did not repent. Indeed I will
cast her into a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her into
great tribulation, unless they repent of their deeds.
- Jesus gave Jezebel time to repent of her sexual immorality,
and
she did not repent. So He cast her into a sickbed, and those who
committed adultery with her into great tribulation, unless they
repented of their deeds.
Revelation 3:3
Remember
therefore how you have
received and heard; hold fast and
repent.
- Jesus commanded the church in Sardis to hold fast and repent.
Revelation 3:19
Therefore
be zealous and repent.
- Jesus commanded the church in Laodicea to be zealous and repent.
