Mark 11:21-23
And
Peter, remembering, said to Him,
“Rabbi, look! The fig tree which You cursed has withered away.”
So Jesus answered and said to them,
“Have faith in God. For
assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and
be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes
that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says.”
- Jesus states, “have faith
in God”.
Mark 16:15,16
Jesus appeared to the eleven
disciples
as they sat at a table and charged them to “Go into all the world and
preach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is
baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned”.
- Salvation succeeds both belief and
baptism. See Mark
16:15,16 in the Be Baptized
section.
- He who does not believe
will be
condemned.
John 3:16-18
For
God so loved the world that He gave
His only begotten Son, that whoever
believes in Him should not perish
but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son
into the
world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be
saved. “He who believes in Him
is not condemned; but he who does
not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the
name of the only begotten Son of God.
- Whoever believes in Jesus will have everlasting life.
- He who believes in Him is not
condemned.
- He who does not believe in
Jesus is
condemned already, because
he has not believed in he name of the only begotten Son of God.
John 6:28,29
Then
they said to Him, “What shall we
do, that we may work the works of God?” Jesus answered and said
to them, “This is the work of God,
that you believe in Him whom He
sent.”
- Believing in Jesus is the work of God.
John 8:24
“Therefore I said to you that you will
die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die
in your sins.”
- We must believe that Jesus is the Son of God or we will die
in
our sins.
John 11:25-27
Jesus
said to her, “I am the
resurrection and the life. He who
believes in Me, though he may die, he
shall live. And whoever
lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?”
She
said to Him, “Yes, Lord, I believe
that
You are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.”
- Those who believe that Jesus is the Son of God will live
eternally.
John 12:44,45
Then
Jesus cried out and said, “He who
believes in Me, believes not in Me but in Him who sent Me.
And he
who sees Me sees Him who sent Me.”
- Whoever believes in Jesus, believes in God.
John 20:30-32
And
truly Jesus did many other signs in
the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may
believe
that Jesus is the Christ, the
Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.
- The book of John was written so we may believe that Jesus is the
Christ, the Son of God.
- If we believe that Jesus is the Son of God then we will have life
in His name.
Acts 8:27-39
So
he
arose and went. And behold, a man
of Ethiopia, a eunuch of great authority under Candace the queen of the
Ethiopians, who had charge of all her treasury, and had come to
Jerusalem to worship, was returning. And sitting in his chariot, he was
reading Isaiah the prophet. Then the Spirit said to Philip, “Go
near and overtake this chariot.” So Philip ran to him, and heard
him reading the prophet Isaiah, and said, “Do you understand what you
are reading?” And he said, “How can I, unless someone guides me?”
And he asked Philip to come up and sit with him. The place in the
Scripture which he read was this:
“ He was led as a sheep to the
slaughter;
And as a lamb before its
shearer is
silent,
So He opened not His mouth.
In His humiliation His justice
was
taken away,
And who will declare His
generation?
For His life is taken from the
earth.”
So the eunuch answered Philip
and
said, “I ask you, of whom does the
prophet say this, of himself or of some other man?” Then Philip
opened his mouth, and beginning at this Scripture, preached Jesus to
him. Now as they went down the road, they came to some
water. And the eunuch said, “See,
here is water. What hinders me
from being baptized?” Then Philip said, “If you believe with all
your heart, you may.” And he answered and said, “I believe that Jesus
Christ is the Son of God.” So he commanded the chariot to stand still.
And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he
baptized him. Now when they came up out of the water, the
Spirit
of the Lord caught Philip away, so that the eunuch saw him no more; and
he went on his way rejoicing.
- We must believe with all our heart that Jesus Christ is the
Son
of God before we are baptized.
Acts 15:6-11
Now
the apostles and elders came
together to consider this matter. And when there had been much
dispute, Peter rose up and said to them: “Men and brethren, you know
that a good while ago God chose among us, that by my mouth the Gentiles
should hear the word of the gospel and believe. So God,
who knows
the heart, acknowledged them by giving them the Holy Spirit, just as He
did to us, and made no distinction between us and them, purifying their
hearts by faith. Now therefore, why do you test God by
putting a
yoke on the neck of the disciples which neither our fathers nor we were
able to bear? But we believe
that through the grace of the Lord
Jesus Christ we shall be saved
in the same manner as they.”
- We must hear the word of God before we believe it.
- Our hearts are purified by faith in Jesus.
- We are saved through the
grace
of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Acts 16:30-34
And
he brought them out and said, “Sirs,
what must I do to be
saved?” So they said, “Believe on the
Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your
household.” Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him
and to
all who were in his house. And he took them the same hour of the
night and washed their stripes. And immediately he and all his family
were baptized. Now when he had brought them into his house, he
set food before them; and he rejoiced, having believed in God with all
his household.
- We must believe on the Lord Jesus Christ to be saved.
- The word of the Lord was spoken to the jailor and to all
who were
in his house. That same hour of the night the jailor washed Paul
and Silas’ stripes and were baptized along with all his family.
- The jailor rejoiced after
he and his family heard the word of the
Lord, believed, and was baptized.
Acts 20:17-21
From
Miletus, Paul sent to Ephesus for
the elders of the church. When they arrived, he said to them: "You know
how I lived the whole time I was with you, from the first day I came
into the province of Asia. I served the Lord with great humility and
with tears, although I was severely tested by the plots of the Jews.
You know that I have not hesitated to preach anything that would be
helpful to you but have taught you publicly and from house to house. I
have declared to both Jews and Greeks that they must turn to God in
repentance and have faith in our Lord Jesus.
- We must turn to God in
repentance and have faith in
our Lord
Jesus.
Acts 26:15-18
"Then
I asked, 'Who are you, Lord?'
" 'I am Jesus, whom you are
persecuting,' the Lord replied. 'Now get up
and stand on your feet. I have appeared to you to appoint you as a
servant and as a witness of what you have seen of me and what I will
show you. I will rescue you from your own people and from the Gentiles.
I am sending you to them to open their eyes and turn them from darkness
to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive
forgiveness of sins and a place among those
who are sanctified by faith
in me.'
- We are sanctified by
faith in
Jesus.
Romans 1:1-6
Paul,
a servant of Christ Jesus, called
to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God— the gospel he
promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures
regarding his Son, who as to his human nature was a descendant of
David, and who through the Spirit of holiness was declared with power
to be the Son of God by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ
our Lord. Through him and for his name's sake, we received grace and
apostleship to call people from among
all the Gentiles to the obedience
that comes from faith. And you also are among those who are
called to
belong to Jesus Christ.
- We have been called from among the world to the obedience
that
comes from faith in Jesus.
Romans 1:16,17
I
am
not ashamed of the gospel, because it
is the power of God for the
salvation of everyone who believes:
first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. For in the gospel a
righteousness from God is revealed, a
righteousness that is by faith
from first to last, just as it is written: "The righteous will live by
faith."
- The gospel is the power of God for the salvation of
everyone who
believes.
- “The righteous will live by
faith.”
Romans 3:21-40
But
now the righteousness of God
apart
from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets,
even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all
and on all who believe. For there is no difference; for all have sinned
and fall short of the glory of God, being
justified freely by His grace
through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God set forth as a
propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His
righteousness, because in His
forbearance God had passed over the sins
that were previously committed, to demonstrate at the present time His
righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who
has faith in Jesus. Where is boasting then? It is
excluded. By
what law? Of works? No, but by the law of faith. Therefore we
conclude that a man is justified by
faith apart from the deeds of the
law. Or is He the God of the Jews only? Is He not also the
God of
the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also, since there is one God who
will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through
faith. Do we then make void the law through faith? Certainly not!
On the contrary, we establish the law.
- The righteousness of God apart from the law of Moses is
revealed
through faith in Jesus Christ to all and on all who believe.
- All have sinned and fall
short of the glory of God.
- Those who have faith in Jesus are justified freely by God’s
grace
through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God set forth as a
propitiation by His blood, to demonstrate His righteousness.
- In His forbearance God
had passed over the sins that were
previously committed, to demonstrate at the present time His
righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who
has faith in Jesus.
- A man is justified by faith in Jesus apart from the deeds
of the
law of Moses.
Romans 4:1-8
What
then shall we say that Abraham our
father has found according to the flesh? For if Abraham was
justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before
God. For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and
it was accounted to him for righteousness.” Now to him who works,
the wages are not counted as grace but as debt. But to him who
does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith
is accounted for righteousness, just as David also describes the
blessedness of the man to whom God imputes righteousness apart from
works:
“ Blessed are those whose
lawless deeds are forgiven,
And whose sins are covered;
Blessed is the man to whom the
LORD shall not impute sin.”
- Abraham believed God, and
it was accounted to him for
righteousness.
- To him who works, the
wages are not counted as grace but as debt.
- To him who does not work
but believes on Him who justifies the
ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness.
Romans 4:19-25
He
did not waver at the promise of God
through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God,
and being fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to
perform. And therefore “it was accounted to him for
righteousness.” Now it was not written for his sake alone that it
was imputed to him, but also for us. It shall be imputed to us who
believe in Him who raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead, who was
delivered up because of our offenses, and was raised because of our
justification.
- Righteousness shall be
imputed to us who believe in Him who
raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead, who was delivered up because of
our offenses, and was raised because of our justification.
Romans 10:1-18
Brethren,
my heart’s desire and prayer
to God for Israel is that they may be saved. For I bear them
witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to
knowledge. For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and
seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the
righteousness of God. For Christ
is the end of the law for
righteousness to everyone who believes. For Moses writes
about
the righteousness which is of the law, “The man who does those things
shall live by them.” But the righteousness of faith speaks in
this way, “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’”
(that is, to bring Christ down from above) or, “‘Who will descend into
the abyss?’” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). But
what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your
heart” (that is, the word of faith which we preach): that if you
confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that
God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the
heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is
made unto salvation. For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes on
Him will not be put to shame.” For there is no distinction
between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who
call upon Him. For “whoever
calls on the name of the LORD shall
be saved.” How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not
believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not
heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall
they preach unless they are sent? As it is written:
“ How beautiful are the feet of
those who preach the gospel of peace,
Who bring glad tidings of good
things!”
But they have not all obeyed
the gospel. For Isaiah says, “LORD, who
has believed our report?” So then faith comes by hearing, and
hearing by the word of God. But I say, have they not heard? Yes
indeed:
“ Their sound has gone out to
all the earth,
And their words to the ends of
the world.”
- Christ is the end of the
law for righteousness (law of Moses) to
everyone who believes.
- Paul states, “if you
confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and
believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will
be saved.”
- With the heart one
believes unto righteousness.
- With the mouth confession
is made unto salvation.
- Whoever believes on Him
will not be put to shame.
- “Whoever calls on the
name of the LORD shall be saved”.
- One must believe in Jesus before he or she can call on the
name of the Lord.
Calling on the name of the
Lord also involves baptism. See Acts
22:1-16 under the Be Baptized
section for details.
1 Corinthians
1:20-21
Where
is the wise? Where is the scribe?
Where is the disputer of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom
of this world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through
wisdom did not know God, it pleased
God through the foolishness of the
message preached to save those who believe.
- It pleased God through
the foolishness of the message preached to
save those who believe.
Galatians 3:19-29
What
purpose then does the law serve?
It was added because of transgressions, till the Seed should come to
whom the promise was made; and it was appointed through angels by the
hand of a mediator. Now a mediator does not mediate for one only,
but God is one. Is the law then against the promises of God?
Certainly not! For if there had been a law given which could have given
life, truly righteousness would have been by the law. But the
Scripture has confined all under sin, that the promise by faith in
Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe. But before
faith came, we were kept under guard by the law, kept for the faith
which would afterward be revealed. Therefore the law was our
tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
But after faith has come, we are
no longer under a tutor. For you
are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of
you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is
neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is
neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And
if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according
to the promise.
- The promise is given to those who believe in Jesus Christ.
- We were kept under guard by the law of Moses until the
faith was
revealed.
- The law of Moses was our
tutor to bring us to Christ, that we
might be justified by faith.
Ephesians 6:10-24
Finally,
my brethren, be strong in the
Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of
God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the
devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against
principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of
this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly
places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be
able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the
breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the
preparation of the gospel of peace; above
all, taking the shield of
faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the
wicked one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the
sword of
the Spirit, which is the word of God; praying always with all prayer
and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all
perseverance and supplication for all the saints— and for me, that
utterance may be given to me, that I may open my mouth boldly to make
known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in
chains; that in it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak. But
that you also may know my affairs and how I am doing, Tychicus, a
beloved brother and faithful minister in the Lord, will make all things
known to you; whom I have sent to you for this very purpose, that you
may know our affairs, and that he may comfort your hearts. Peace
to the brethren, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord
Jesus Christ. Grace be with all those who love our Lord Jesus
Christ in sincerity. Amen
- The shield of faith helps christians to quench all the
fiery
darts of the wicked one (satan).
Philippians
3:8-11
Yet
indeed I also count all things loss
for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I
have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I
may gain Christ and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness,
which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the
righteousness which is from God by faith; that I may know Him
and the
power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being
conformed to His death, if, by any means, I may attain to the
resurrection from the dead.
- Righteousness from God does not come from observing the law
of
Moses, but through our faith in Christ Jesus.
Colossians 2:8-15
Beware
lest anyone cheat you through
philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men,
according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to
Christ. For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily;
and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and
power. In Him you were also
circumcised with the circumcision
made without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh,
by the circumcision of Christ, buried with Him in baptism, in which you
also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who
raised Him from the dead. And you, being dead in your
trespasses
and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with
Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, having wiped out the
handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to
us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the
cross. Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a
public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.
- Those who are buried with Christ in baptism are raised with
Him
through faith in the working of God. See Romans 6:1-14 in the Be
Baptized section.
1 Thessalonians
2:13
For
this reason we also thank God
without ceasing, because when you
received the word of God which you
heard from us, you welcomed it not as the word of men, but as it is in
truth, the word of God, which
also effectively works in you who believe.
- Belief succeeds hearing the word of God.
- The word of God effectively works in those who believe.
1
Thessalonians
5:8-10
But
let us who are of the day be sober,
putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope
of salvation. For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to
obtain
salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, that whether
we wake or sleep, we should live together with Him.
- We are called to put on the breastplate of faith and love.
- We are called to put on the helmet of the hope of salvation.
1 Timothy 4:6-10
If
you instruct the brethren in these
things, you will be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished in the
words of faith and of the good doctrine which you have carefully
followed. But reject profane and old wives’ fables, and exercise
yourself toward godliness. For bodily exercise profits a little,
but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life
that now is and of that which is to come. This is a faithful
saying and worthy of all acceptance. For to this end we both
labor and suffer reproach, because we
trust in the living God, who is
the Savior of all men, especially of those who believe.
These
things command and teach.
- The living God is the Savior of all men, especially of
those who
believe.
1 Timothy 6:9-12
But
those who desire to be rich fall
into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts
which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of
money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from
the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many
sorrows. But you, O man
of God, flee these things and pursue
righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness.
Fight the good fight of faith,
lay hold on eternal life, to which you
were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence
of many witnesses.
- Some have strayed from the faith in their greediness for
money.
- Men of God are to flee greed and pursue righteousness, godliness,
faith, love, patience, gentleness.
- Men of God are to fight the good fight of faith, laying
hold on
eternal life.
- Men of God should confess the
good confession in the presence of
many witnesses.
Hebrews 6:11,12
And
we desire that each one of you show
the same diligence to the full assurance of hope until the end, that
you do not become sluggish, but
imitate those who through faith and
patience inherit the promises.
- Christians are not to become sluggish but are to imitate those
who through faith and patience inherit the promises.
Hebrews 10:35-39
Therefore
do not cast away your
confidence, which has great reward. For you have need of
endurance, so that after you have done the will of God, you may receive
the promise:
“ For yet a little while,
And He who is coming will come
and will not tarry.
Now the just shall live by faith;
But if anyone draws back,
My soul has no pleasure in
him.”
But we are not of those who
draw back to perdition, but of those
who
believe to the saving of the soul.
- The just shall live by faith.
- Christians believe to the saving of the soul.
Hebrews 11
Now faith is the substance of things
hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. For by it the elders
obtained a good testimony. By
faith we understand that the worlds were
framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not
made of things which are visible. By faith Abel offered to
God a
more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he obtained witness
that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts; and through it he
being dead still speaks. By faith Enoch was taken away so that he
did not see death, “and was not found, because God had taken him”; for
before he was taken he had this testimony, that he pleased God.
But without faith it is impossible to
please Him, for he who comes to
God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who
diligently seek Him. By faith Noah, being divinely warned
of
things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the
saving of his household, by which he condemned the world and became
heir of the righteousness which is according to faith. By faith
Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would
receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was
going. By faith he dwelt in the land of promise as in a foreign
country, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of
the same promise; for he waited for the city which has foundations,
whose builder and maker is God. By faith Sarah herself also
received strength to conceive seed, and she bore a child when she was
past the age, because she judged Him faithful who had promised.
Therefore from one man, and him as good as dead, were born as many as
the stars of the sky in multitude—innumerable as the sand which is by
the seashore. These all died in faith, not having received the
promises, but having seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced
them and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the
earth. For those who say such things declare plainly that they
seek a homeland. And truly if they had called to mind that
country from which they had come out, they would have had opportunity
to return. But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly
country. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He
has prepared a city for them. By faith Abraham, when he was
tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises offered
up his only begotten son, of whom it was said, “In Isaac your seed
shall be called,” concluding that God was able to raise him up, even
from the dead, from which he also received him in a figurative
sense. By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning things to
come. By faith Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each of the sons
of Joseph, and worshiped, leaning on the top of his staff. By
faith Joseph, when he was dying, made mention of the departure of the
children of Israel, and gave instructions concerning his bones.
By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden three months by his
parents, because they saw he was a beautiful child; and they were not
afraid of the king’s command. By faith Moses, when he became of
age, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, choosing
rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the
passing pleasures of sin, esteeming the reproach of Christ greater
riches than the treasures in Egypt; for he looked to the reward.
By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king; for he
endured as seeing Him who is invisible. By faith he kept the
Passover and the sprinkling of blood, lest he who destroyed the
firstborn should touch them. By faith they passed through the Red
Sea as by dry land, whereas the Egyptians, attempting to do so, were
drowned. By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they were
encircled for seven days. By faith the harlot Rahab did not
perish with those who did not believe, when she had received the spies
with peace. And what more shall I say? For the time would fail me
to tell of Gideon and Barak and Samson and Jephthah, also of David and
Samuel and the prophets: who through faith subdued kingdoms,
worked righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions,
quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of
weakness were made strong, became valiant in battle, turned to flight
the armies of the aliens. Women received their dead raised to
life again. Others were tortured, not accepting deliverance, that they
might obtain a better resurrection. Still others had trial of
mockings and scourgings, yes, and of chains and imprisonment.
They were stoned, they were sawn in two, were tempted, were slain with
the sword. They wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins, being
destitute, afflicted, tormented— of whom the world was not worthy. They
wandered in deserts and mountains, in dens and caves of the
earth. And all these, having obtained a good testimony through
faith, did not receive the promise, God having provided something
better for us, that they should not be made perfect apart from us.
- Now faith is the
substance of things hoped for, the evidence of
things not seen.
- By faith the elders
obtained a good testimony.
- By faith we understand
that the worlds were framed by the word of
God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which
are visible.
- Without faith it is
impossible to please Him (God), for he who
comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of
those who diligently seek Him.
James 2:14-26
What does it profit, my brethren, if
someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save
him? If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of
daily food,
and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,”
but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what
does it profit? Thus also faith
by itself, if it does not have
works, is dead. But someone will say, “You have faith, and
I have
works.” Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my
faith by my works. You
believe that there is one God. You do
well. Even the demons believe—and tremble! But do you want to
know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead? Was
not
Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on
the altar? Do you see that
faith was working together with his
works, and by works faith was made perfect? And the
Scripture was
fulfilled which says, “Abraham
believed God, and it was accounted to
him for righteousness.” And he was called the friend of
God. You
see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only.
Likewise, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she
received the messengers and sent them out another way? For as the
body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.
- Faith without works cannot save.
- Faith by itself, if it
does not have works, is dead.
- Christians show their faith by their works.
- Even the demons believe - and
tremble!
- Faith without works is
dead.
- Faith is made perfect by works.
- Abraham believed God ,
and it was accounted to him for
righteousness.
- A man is justified by
works, and not by faith only.
1 Peter 1:3-12
Blessed be the God and Father of our
Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us
again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from
the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does
not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are kept by the power of
God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last
time. In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little
while,
if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, that the
genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that
perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor,
and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ, whom having not seen you
love. Though now you do not see Him,
yet believing, you rejoice with
joy inexpressible and full of glory, receiving the end of your
faith—the salvation of your souls. Of this salvation the
prophets
have inquired and searched carefully, who prophesied of the grace that
would come to you, searching what, or what manner of time, the Spirit
of Christ who was in them was indicating when He testified beforehand
the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow. To
them it was revealed that, not to themselves, but to us they were
ministering the things which now have been reported to you through
those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from
heaven—things which angels desire to look into.
- Christians are kept by
the power of God through faith for
salvation.
- The end of a Christian's faith is the salvation of his/her
soul.
1 Peter 1:17-21
And
if you call on the Father, who
without partiality judges according to each one’s work, conduct
yourselves throughout the time of your stay here in fear; knowing that
you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold,
from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, but
with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and
without spot. He indeed was foreordained before the foundation of
the world, but was manifest in these last times for you who through Him
believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so
that your faith and hope are in God.
- A Christians faith and hope should be in God.
1 John 3:21-24
Beloved,
if our heart does not condemn
us, we have confidence toward God. And whatever we ask we receive
from Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things that are
pleasing in His sight. And this is
His commandment: that we should
believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as He
gave us commandment. Now
he who keeps His commandments abides in
Him, and He in him. And by this we know that He abides in us, by the
Spirit whom He has given us.
- We are commanded to believe on the name of God’s Son Jesus
Christ
and love one another.
- He who keeps His
commandments abides in Him, and He in him.
And by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has
given us.
1 John 5:1-20
Whoever
believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who
loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him.
By
this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and
keep His commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep
His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome. For
whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory
that has overcome the world—our faith. Who is he who
overcomes
the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? This
is He who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ; not only by water, but
by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who bears witness, because the
Spirit is truth. For there are three that bear witness in heaven:
the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are
one. And there are three that bear witness on earth: the Spirit,
the water, and the blood; and these three agree as one. If we
receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater; for this is
the witness of God which He has testified of His Son. He who
believes in the Son of God has the witness in himself; he who does not
believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed the
testimony that God has given of His Son. And this is the
testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His
Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of
God does not have life. These
things I have written to you who
believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have
eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the
Son of God. Now this is the confidence that we have in
Him, that
if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we
know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the
petitions that we have asked of Him. If anyone sees his brother
sinning a sin which does not lead to death, he will ask, and He will
give him life for those who commit sin not leading to death. There is
sin leading to death. I do not say that he should pray about
that. All unrighteousness is sin, and there is sin not leading to
death. We know that whoever is born of God does not sin; but he
who has been born of God keeps himself, and the wicked one does not
touch him. We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies
under the sway of the wicked one. And we know that the Son of God
has come and has given us an understanding, that we may know Him who is
true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is
the true God and eternal life.
- Whoever believes that
Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and
everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him.
- And this is the victory that
has overcome the world—our faith.
- He who believes in the
Son of God has the witness in himself; he
who does not believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not
believed the testimony that God has given of His Son.
- Those who believe in the Son of God have eternal life.
Revelation 2:10
Do
not fear any of those things which
you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of
you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation
ten days. Be faithful until death,
and I will give you the crown of
life.
- Those who are faithful to God unto death will receive the
crown
of life.
