| A pentacle is a five pointed star , usually inside a circle . The circle symbolizes unity and infinity . The pentacle corresponds to the element of earth . North is a pentacle's direction ; its energy is female . This is the star of The Goddess . It is pointed upward for protection , blessings , consecration , meditation , and positive energy ; downward for banishing and binding . Some say you should never invert a pentacle , but rather draw it backward for banishing and binding . The five points , starting at the top , can represent any of the following symbols : Birth , initiation , consummation , reprose , death ; Love , wisdom , knowledge , law , power . Pentacles are also used in magical workings and are also meditation tools . |

| This is the womb of The Goddess , the cauldron of inspiration , a place of resurrection . Its element is water , its direction is center , and its energy is female . Cauldrons are sacred to the Welsh Goddess Cerridwen , Keeper Of Inspiration . They are traditionally made of cast iron and have three legs . Some witches love to make pumpkin soup in their cauldron for Halloween . The cauldron is used for ; Brewing herbs and potions ; Renewing (rebirth , regeneration , and transformation ) ; Reflecting the moon ( for lunar magic ) ; Jumping over ( for fertility ) ; Dancing around while spell casting ; Safely burning things . |

| Most Witches have a Book Of Shadows . This is a blank book in which they write down any information they think is interesting or useful to them as a Witch . They begin using the book as soon as possible . It can be any type of book , but will need to be fairly large . A Book Of Shadows is a very powerful thing -- the repository of Magic . It grows more powerful with the passing years ,as one expands it . It must be handwritten . It must be treated with respect and never let anyone else handle it . A Book Of Shadows usually includes : Spells Rituals Prayers Magical correspondences Information on Magic itself It may also include : Incantations Pictures or sketches Charts ( Moon or Tide Tables ) Symbols Goddess pages A Coven section Records of Magical Workings and Experiences During the Dark Ages in Europe , Witches kept a tiny flame of enlightenment burning , storing ancient knowledge in their books , and defending a bastion of literacy in the face of ignorance . To be caught with a Book Of Shadows during "The Burning Times" meant torture and death . Not Man , Woman , nor Child was safe . |
