Joseph Kirkpatrick Goudy was around 9 years old when his father Thomas Bigger Goudy sold out the family holdings in Ohio and moved to Illinois near Monmouth. Little is known about his early life, we can only assume he went to school and college at Monmouth. Early records show that he was both a teacher and administrator in one of the elementary schools in Monmouth. In 1872 he married Rachel Elvira Henderson daughter of Colonel William D. Henderson and his wife Martha early pioneers who came to the area in 1835. Joseph was admitted to the bar to practice Law in the State of Illinois at Beardstown on 14 February 1880. He was admitted to the bar in Nebraska in 1882 and in January of 1891 he was admitted to the bar in Colorado. Joseph was a prominent attorney in Colorado Springs and when he died suddenly of a heart attack 13 weeks short of his 48th birthday the entire community was shocked. The Colorado Springs Telegraph wrote his funeral, conducted by the local Elks Lodge, was "the grandest ever seen in this area before". The Colorado Bar Association convened a special meeting to decide how to pay tribute a man held in such esteem by his peers. His Widow Rachel who was known to her friends and family as Ella must have fallen into dire straights, as she changed residences about every 2 years till she died in 1907 from Tuberculosis. The city directory shows all her girls having gone to work in their early teens.

JOSEPH KIRKPATRICK GOUDY, son of Thomas B. Goudy and Nancy P. Kirkpatrick was born 25 May, 1849 in near Springfield, Clark Co., OH, and died 19 Feb, 1898 in Colorado Springs, CO. He married RACHEL ELVIRA HENDERSON 22 Aug, 1872 in Monmouth, Warren Co., Illinois, USA, daughter of WILLIAM D. HENDERSON and MARTHA WATTS.
