ALETHA BAILEY HENRY

      Aletha was born in Massilon, Ohio on Aug. 6, 1905 - died March 21, 1997. She was the second daughter of William E. Bailey and Alice M. Border. On Jan. 19, 1924 she married Lewis W, Henry - born May 15, 1905 - died Aug. 28, 1980. They had eight children.

ALETHA'S ANCESTORS

        The orginal Bailey in Aletha's line is believed to be Welsh. When Gen. Burgoyne was looking for men, this Bailey signed up, came to America, and became a Revolutionary War soldier. Burgoyne fought only one battle--on Aug. 16, 1777--and surrendered.
         This part of her line starts with her great-grandfather Phillip Bailey - born Oct. 9, 1812 in West Worthing, Massachusetts--died (date unknown) in Massillon, Ohio. Phillip married Ashsah Oakes on April 10, 1849 in Halifax, Vermont. Ashsah was born Nov. 25, 1818 in Colrain, Mass.--died Nov, 16, 1907 in Masillon, Ohio.
    This was Phillip's second marriage. Phillip and Ashsah had two children:
        1) Mary Ellen
     * 2) Jeremiah Phillip Bailey 1853-1924 (Aletha's grandfather - Gladys's great-grandfather)

    Jeremiah P. Bailey (1853-1924) was married on April 23, 1876 to Eliza Cormany Bailey (Feb. 16, 1858 - July 1943)
       Jeremiah and Eliza had five children:
                               1) William Everett Bailey: Nov. 28, 1876 - Jan. 19, 1939
                               2) Austin Bailey: June 30, 1878 - Feb. 11, 1970
                               3) Mary Bailey: April 26, 1880 - April 22, 1972
                               4) Cora Bailey: May 11, 1884 - Sept. 22, 1899
                               5) Florence Bailey: Feb. 10, 1896 - Sept. 1980

    William E Bailey: Nov. 28, 1876 - Jan. 19, 1939 (Gladys's grandfather); Married June 11, 1903 to Alice May Border Bailey: born Jan. 14, 1874 in Dover,Ohio --- died Sept. 21, 1954 in Massillon,Ohio

The date Phillip and Ashsah moved to Masillon, Ohio is not known, but the original Bailey farm is where Doctors Hospital is now located in Perry Heights, between Masillon and Canton. Austin Street leads back to the Hospital, which is on Bailey Road (Aletha's family home was located on Bailey Road and the House is still there today).
Austin Street was named after Austin Bailey, Aletha's Uncle.
Florence Bailey was the last living Bailey of her generation. She lived in the house her father Jeremiah built
until she died in 1980.
