What is a Sugar Glider?
Sugar Gliders or Petaurus Brevicips are a tiny marsupial found in Australia and Indonesia.  They resemble the flying squirrel. They both have a patagium or gliding membrane.  Although they are not related, many people ask me if that is what they are. Sugar Gliders belong to the possom family. They are not a rodent. Therefore you should never file their teeth. They won't grow back.  It is completly unnecessary and painful for the glider.  In the wild they use their teeth for piercing the bark of the eucalyptus tree for yummy sap.  Sugar gliders are nocturnal. Meaning asleep in the day and awake at night.  Although their name is Sugar please do not feed them sweets! You may feed them honey on occasion and they love yogurt. Their diet mainly consists of fruits, veggies, proteins, and a staple.
Sugar Gliders are a lifetime commitment and should be considered carefully when deciding to adopt. They can live to be 12 to 15 years in captivity. They form such a strong bond with their owners that it can be too hard on them to be rehomed.

In the wild they live in colonies. They are very social animals and are happier with at least one other glider to house with. Many people can keep a lone glider without any problems. You'll have to spend A LOT of time with him or her and still they may long for a glider companion. Many become depressed and lonely. With them being nocturnal it is hard to stay up all night with them.  Having two means that while you sleep your glider still has some one to play with.
