Care and Diet
Diet is one of the most important things you can do for your glider.
| Sugar Gliders are an exotic animal and so they require an exotic diet. We feed the High Protein Wombaroo diet or HPW. Fruits and/or Vegetables should be feed each and every night along with a protein source and supplements. Here is a list of proven diets that I reccomend. Click on them for their recipes and meal plan. Whichever diet you choose it is important to follow it entirely and do not add or take away. | Fresh water should be given every night in a clean water bottle! |
Gliders have many health risks. Another reason why diet and good husbandry skills are so important. The most common is hypocalcaemia or HLP (hind leg paralysis). Usually this is caused by a calcium deficiency. They can also easily get parasites. Since Gliders are designed to hide their illnesses in the wild, by the time they show signs you may only have an hour to get them help. Always have an emergency vet available.
Cage size should be no smaller then 2by2by3 Bigger is always better. Bar spacing should be no more then a 1/2 in. Any bigger then that and they will be able to squeeze through. I learned that the hard way. You may have to use zip ties or clips on the doors too. Some gliders can figure out how to open them. They need lots of toys to play with for stimulation. Be careful when selecting your toys. You don't want anything that is harmful to chew on or anything that they can get their limbs stuck in. A whodent or stealth wheel is a must!
Cages and all accessories must be cleaned once a week with a good antibacterial soap or spray. You can also add vinegar to your water. Do not clean them all at once. Doing this will just make their cage smell worse because they will go crazy scenting everything. One week clean just the cage. The next clean pouches and accessories. I can stick most of my accessories in the washing machine and then I let them air dry.
