| July 29, 2003 I don' know if any of you have noticed, but it has been a long time since my last "thoughts" column. Well, I can't allow that to go on any longer. It turns out that the whole "Hunting for Bambi" thing was a hoax. I am impressed...whoever put that together did a great job to get it covered by so many media outlets. It worked in the same way that the humor on The Onion or SportsPickle works...it was outrageous, but it was just on the borderline of believability. Do you ever come to major realizations really late in the game. Like, you're sitting around watching VH-1, when it finally dawns on you what Frankie Goes to Hollywood was talking about in their 80s hit "Relax". You definitely know the song...click here for a refresher. Anyways, I had one of those moments yesterday. I was discussing what to do with my truck, when my dad told me that he was just going to give me the Bonneville that was earmarked for my brother. Jon, in turn, was going to get my stepmom's Infiniti QX4 and my stepmom was going to get a new car. It suddenly occurred to me that my family is well-off. That just doesn't seem normal. I have always known I was spoiled, but it didn't occur to me that I was rich. I grew up with my mom, where our monthly trip to Pizza Hut was considered a huge expenditure, so this is all a new experience for me. I think only three people really mourned the demise of my truck: my dad, Kiley, and I. My dad foots the bill, Kiley views the truck as a |

| reminder of our relationship, and I had developed some emotional attachment to it. Everyone else can't help but notice that I traded up pretty substantially. My brother wins because he now is driving a 2001 QX4 instead of the 97 Bonneville and my stepmom is overjoyed that she finally has a good excuse to get a new car. Never have I seen a $3000 loss been greeted with such joy. I know I have mentioned it in this space before, but everyone should check out the Austin City Limits Festival. Tickets are on sale now, $70 for a three day pass. There is at least 15 bands that I'd pay to see on their own. Everyone is going to be there...Septmember 19-21, 2003. One of the original party theme ideas was Come in What you Sleep In. It was basically a cheap ploy to see girls in lingerie and to see if anyone would show up naked. We had already planned to put a bed in the middle of the living room...I was trying to convince Rob that it had to be his bed, since he has a girlfriend. Somehow he wasn't going for it. Why Rob, do you think you will be needing it? I kid, because I care. I just found out that the person I was apologizing to in the previous column, had no idea what I was talking about. There is comedy, there is high comedy, then there is that... I saw Bad Boys II last week...what an incredible indie flick!! Seriously, it has to go down as one of the most unnecessarily long movies in cinematic history...if you cut an hour off of it, it may have actually been adequate. Instead, it was just completely numbing. After you see one corpse decapitated, haven' you seen them all? Two Japanese influenced shows that you have to watch: Fox's Banzai and TNN's Most Extreme Elimination Challenge. Both are simply beyond description. |
