| Hastings United Reserves 1 (Neil Whiteman) Deal Town Reserves 3 (Joe Cullen, Brian Darcy, Matt Sroud) Near the end of the season for the reserves, but even though this was the last home game, they still have five more away games to go, but this performance showed why they dont deserve to be champions. Their attitude and hunger for a win was totally wrong, they lost spirit, they gave away three goals, dont knock Deal they took their chances well, but the defence stood still. Captain Graham Morris normally a main defender who you could rely on played poorly, the attack was all-wrong, the service to Chris Honey was awful, the crosses were nearer the ground than mid-air. The match started evenly with both sides getting in each others faces, but Deal broke first but only for Darcy to see his shot go hopelessly wide. But United didnt regroup and Darcy got in behind the defence, he laid the ball off to Joe Cullen on the edge of the box who dispatched past Harris-Green. New faces Darryl Smith and Neil Whiteman seemed a bit nervy at the start, Smith was a Graham Webb look-a-like bit without the hair, while Whiteman was tall but not enough strength, to challenge at a higher level. But constantly Gilmore made mince meat of Smith down the left flank, and caused some danger with devilish crosses, while Uniteds best chance was a total mess-up by Peter Taylor, which rolled into the keepers mitts. But the linesmen helped Deal to their second goal, the ball was played through with Darcy about 50 yards offside, the linesman stood still and watched Darcy put the ball past the on-rushing Harris-Green. Chris Honey was out of the match with the Kent side keeping him closely monitored, but Dominic Cruttenden saw the white lines of the inside of the box but his powerful deflected shot was parried away by the keeper. But United kept plodding away, but eventually lost the fight on the hour mark when Danny Ellis lost the ball by his own penalty area, the ball was stroked back to Stroud who pushed the ball home. Deal were in delight, United were callous, and it showed, many times United had possession, they never seemed they wanted to do things. One good sign was the introduction of Peter Sayers the defender who broke a bone in his foot, at Sittingbourne near the start of the season while playing in the first team. Sayers brought some attacking flair, but not playing for nearly six months didnt help matters. But United started to fling in shots Bruce Sands hit one wide and so did Graham Morris, after good work from Chris Honey. But it was time for celebration for new guy Neil Whiteman (whod had a good second half in defensive midfield) rose above the rest to head home a Danny Ellis corner. But even that didnt enlighten the United 11, who had to thank Sam Harris-Green twice for saving two one-on-ones with Brian Darcy. But nearing the end of the game United poured forward with Chris Honey forcing Tony Deer into one good save, and into stoppage time Neil Whiteman again popped up with a header, only to be denied by the crossbar. Darryl Smith who was eventually put upfront also pulled the keeper into one save, but it wasnt enough, as United slipped on the day when Dover met Corinthians and Dover won. Well thats it for the reserves, only a few games to go, and fortunate after todays game can only be called one word CRAP, but the local first team games should bring some new surroundings to Saturday afternoons. |
