| Hastings United 3 (Peters 32 Min Pen, Sherwood 56 Min, Taylor 83 Min) Stamford 0 Attendance 292 United put in by far their best home performance of the season to overcome high flyers Stamford. All United players put in 100% to gift United a deserved 3-0 victory, and keep their unbeaten home record against Stamford. The facts show a quite close game, but the game was never in doubt after the second goal, Stamford didnt put new United keeper Chris May under enough pressure to get a goal, it showed what happened when United did put the Daniels keeper Ludek Michalik under pressure, the errors crept in and United took advantage of them and won the match. United had four players suspended including top scorer Carl Rook. Chris May was in goal, new signing from Ashford Peter Mortley was superb in central defence with Mark Green, Steve Sands was on the right wing, Mitchell Sherwood on the left and Goodwin and Honey upfront. It took United ten minutes to register a shot on target, Ryan Peters free kick was well saved at the near post by Michalik, then similar Russell Eldridges free kick was identically saved by Michalik. Then Matt Greens shot on the half hour mark was the first for Stamford, but the shot went miles wide, then the referee played his part, a cross came in from the right, and Malcolm Ndekwe pulled down Chris Honey, the referee was on spot to award a penalty, Ryan Peters ran up and hammered the ball into the bottom left hand corner, the keeper guessed the right way but it was too far over for him. United tried to press for a second, but instead Stamford straightaway came onto the attack, and Matt Green hit a hard shot that Chris May was called into action for, the shot was hard and powerful and straight going towards to top corner, May rose his hand and palmed the ball away for a corner. Then Ryan Nash flicked the ball onto Kevin Byrne whos powerful shot just went wide of the goal. Steve Ringwoods shot on the volley from 20 yards out went bobbling wide. But Stamford ended the half better, Matt Greens powerful shot was just blocked by debutant Peter Mortley, the resulting corner was probably one of the best chances, at the far post Malcolm Ndekwe beat Jimmy Elford to the ball and headed just over the bar. But Ryan Nash came closest when his looping shot hit the crossbar at the end of the half, but United went in, probably the better in the both penalty areas. Stamford started the second strongest, Ryan Nashs cross was caught by the wind and it needed Chris May to palm the ball wide for Jimmy Elford to clear. Then Ian Edge saw his powerful free kick just pass the post, the nearest and most dangerous Stamford were. United got back into the match, Ryan Peters free kick was again, well saved by Michalik at the far post. Then a cross from Steve Sands was fumbled by Michalik, Peters shot was blocked and Steve Ringwoods shot just over the bar, but the linesman had his flag up for offside. But then a bit of genius, Mitchell Sherwood ran after the ball won the ball off of Robbie Maddox, he ran down the line got past one, then got into the area got past two more defenders and delightfully slotted the ball past keeper Michalik, a wonder goal, from what he could become a wonder kid. The seventeen year old celebrated like hed won the FA Cup and United felt the match was won. Nobody agreed after the Sittingbourne comeback, but it was. United couldve gone four-nil up, Chris Honey turned his man in the box, his shot was blocked by the keepers leg, and Ryan Peters follow-up went just wide. Then a worrying time when a cross went straight across the United box, it went straight through the five men in the box, signs of low concentration, and Stamford had chances to come back Ryan Nashs poor shot was well blocked by Peter Mortley, and Ian Edges weak shot couldve been stopped by Mickey Mouse. Then Stamford were having lapses in the defence, like what we were at the start of the season, Mark Goodwin won the ball of Maddox and his hard shot was well saved by Michalik. The match was a superb advert for Non-League Football, especially how sides dont give up as Stamford stroked the ball around well, and it led to top scorer Kevin Byrne being onside, coming in at a diagonal angle, Chris May come and blocked the ball. Then Stamford also had a penalty appeal turned down, when two players went up for a header, Mortley won the header, but appeals over using his hands on the Stamford striker. Then United wrapped up the game on 83 minutes, Andy Peaks was trying to control the ball being the last man, Peter Taylor ran at him, won the ball and dispatched the ball past the on-rushing Michalik, United fans in disbelief, and finally showing that United can mix it with the rest of the division. Stamford ended the game with the chances but by then they were downhearted, but still trying Ian Edge saw his shot go wide, and Kevin Byrne headed the ball straight at Chris May. As the final whistle descended on The Pilot Field the United fans were jubilant, but you couldnt not feel sorry for the small contingent of Stamford fans who had to go home, quite unhappy, as their side were frustrated by the good United defence. Overall a great performance by United, Stamford didnt look that good, it was hard to see why Stamford were near the top, the defensive pair of Mark Green and Peter Mortley were fantastic, the midfield was marshalled brilliantly by Steve Ringwood and Ryan Peters. But United deserved the 3-0 scoreline, Stamford now must thank Chatham for beating Burgess Hill that keeps the Daniels still in with a good shout for a top seven finish, but they definitely need to improve. ClaretnBlue Man Of The Match Peter Mortley A great signing, stopped Stamford in their tracks, didnt put a foot wrong all day, and over-shadowed Mark Green, and hes 28 so we do have an adult in our side (cheeky boy) |
