Steve Lovell was shown why his United side cannot be up near the top of the league.  United were shown a great team performance by the new league leaders Kings Lynn, The Linnets needed all three points to capture top spot, United needed points to keep a healthy gap between ourselves and Erith and co.

But United werent played off the park, it was actually two silly acts of bad defending that let Kings Lynn go home with three points.  Kings Lynn did make eight changes to their line-up, one notable absentee Dale Watkins thankfully not even on the bench, but they still had the dead ball specialist David Staff, Gary Setchell, and the likes of Chris Bacon and Richard Woodrow on the bench.

Kings Lynn started the fastest, but Robbie Harris shot was straight at Nessling.  But it wasnt too long before The Linnets broke in front.  David Staff laid off the ball, United didnt close Jack Defty down whos first time short went straight into the top corner, Nessling was helpless.

United started to get on the fringe of the penalty area, four goal hero on Saturday Carl Rook didnt have joy when he saw his header go wildly wide.  Mitchell Sherwood who last scored at Kings Lynn also saw his shot from a corner go wide of goal.  But defence was started to get more troubled, especially when Harris got the ball from Henham after a miss-timed tackle, but Harris put his shot wide of goal.

The Linnets didnt stop Carl Holmes had his header go over the bar, when it seemed easier to score.  But then one major turning point that couldve been, Rook put Goodwin through on goal, but he took the ball too far and his shot just squeezed past the post.  But even then Kings Lynn had another attempt yet again Robbie Harris, but his slow shot was straight at Nessling.

But again, Goodwin was put through to his second one-on-one and the shot hit the Stevie Wilsons legs and went for a corner.  But while United were getting back into the match and camping inside The Linnets half, they did what title winners do, soak up the pressure, go down the other end and score.  The ball was played to the right of the box, Lee Stephenson got the ball past Jimmy Elford (people said a hand was used??) the ball went into the box and Stephenson fired home, to the delight of the travelling support.

The second half started like the first, Kings Lynn settled down they stroked the ball around like a team, always knowing where the next man is, always going forward never going backwards, unlike United.  Mitchell Sherwood got down the left flank cross to Goodwin who fired miles wide.  David Staff who had a quiet game saw his weak shot go straight into the keepers mitts, it seemed the Kings Lynn were keeping the score down just for us.

But one of the moves of the match came from Mark Goodwin, Steve Ringwood flung in a cross, Goodwin controlled it but his shot was superbly blocked by the stretching Dan Hammond.  The Linnets also saw Jack Defty flicked header go straight at Nessling, but Mark Goodwin was getting more chances, again in the area he had his quick shot blocked by Gary Setchell.  By this time The Linnets were giving their squad a run about, using all three subs in about 70 minutes.

But even then they had chances, but Henham gave the ball away just outside the box, but even with time and space Woodrow drove his weak shot at Nessling.  Then a scramble, Holmes had his attempt blocked, but Defty floated the ball in to Jack Defty who hammered the ball from about 10 yards out, but Nessling superbly saved, the awareness was warranted by a good round of applause.  Then Nessling was the hero again, he turned into the central defender needing to come out, he tackled David Staff, the ball ran to Richard Woodrow, but his shot went wide of goal.

Then a nasty turn to the match, the ball ran into the United half, the keeper came for the ball, he clearly got to the ball first, but Chris Bacon went straight through Nessling, Nessling was badly hurt, down for five minutes, but Mr Valentino, remembered for giving Dentys dive at Dover, not sending off the guy at Sittingbourne for breaking Peter Sayers legs and giving three penalties at Fisher didnt lift a finger.  Nessling got back up, but had no choice, United had no reserve keeper, in my view a red card wouldve been thrown up to Mr Bacon.

But that didnt stop Nessling, he needed to yet again to turn into a centre half, and tackle Staff, again he got it, maybe another magic turn-arounds for Lovell, Nessling a centre back, maybe stick him in goal.  Carl Rook turned his man and it needed two defenders to clear it off the line, but as usual United went home to another defeat, although they can be happy, Kings Lynn the best team display Ive seen this season by a mile, and by Tonbridges recent run, I can see Kings Lynn going all the way to the championship.

Overall United played well, and did make the game quite even, but the quality showed, we didnt take advantage of the possession count, but Kings Lynn did when they attacked, they always seemed to have a shot, while United either gave the ball away, or put their shot miles wide, although a better performance than Erith.  United must look to Saturday for three points, as March has some tough fixtures.

ClaretnBlue Man Of The Match

Greg Nessling

Kept the score respectful, had to play the last ten minutes with a bad injury, but it may just go away, hes got his confidence right back to the full, and is now looking a good buy, I mean grab, well played.
