| Hastings United 1 (Rook 17 Min) Histon 4 (Munns 20 Min, Kennedy 65 Min, Cambridge Pen ?? Min, Rowe 90 Min) Attendance 321 Hastings United pulled down the curtains on their season with a 4-1 defeat to eventual runners up Histon, but the score rather flattered the visitors. Histon were being torn apart in the first half and rather lucky to go in equal after the visitors having the luck of the linesman not seeing Peter Munns five yards offside who went on and equalised. Histon werent special and started to play better when the news of Kings Lynn drawing at Fisher, and a glimmer of hope that Fisher could win and they could do the same, fortunately Kings Lynn went on to win 2-0 and deservedly clinched the title. Steve Lovell was forced into one change in Peter Mortley was injured still and David Henham joined Mark Green as the centre backs. And really there wasnt much on show, Ian Cambridge and Jamie Barker both having chances one being blocked by May and one went wide. Ryan Peters had his dipping shot well turned over the bar by Hulyer. But suddenly Unietd took the lead after having much of the possession, the ball went through a crowded box, and it fell to Carl Rook at the far post who was unmarked who hammered the ball into the top of the net. But it only lasted for three minutes as Histon quickly equalised, Peter Munns was at least five yards offside he went on and scuffed his shot, but it helped to fool Chris May and the ball went in the far corner. Histon had other chances but Vowden, Munns, and Haniver didnt do enough to worthy a goal. United had much of the possession, but didnt make the most of it. The second half started with David Henham being replaced by Peter Sayers, Sayers went to midfield, Sands went to right-back and Jimmy Elford at centre half as Lovell was trying something different. It didnt work as Histon got rather more luck than United did. Ryan Peters header didnt have enough direction from a great Mitchell Sherwood cross, and with the goalkeeper totally flat-footed somehow the ball went straight down the keepers throat. Ryan Peters also pulled a good save from Hulyer at full stretch, but the goalmouth scramble afterwards was cleared without fuss. Then Histon took a rather lucky lead, Neil Kennedy got past Steve Sands and ran with Jimmy Elford, but Kennedy scuffed his shot and with the bobbling pitch, the ball ran past the stretching Chris May and into the bottom right hand corner. Histon then got a penalty, substitute James Rowe played for the penalty, but Jimmy Elford made contact and nobody could argue that it was the right decision, Ian Cambridge stepped up and fooled May by slotting the ball into the left hand corner when May was destined to the right. Histon with the two goal lead, didnt attack they packed the defence with nine men and left two upfront. But straight after the goal Jimmy Elford played the ball back to Chris May who hit the ball straight at James Rowe, Rowe took the ball into the box, but May superbly saved Rowes shot. Steve Lovell kept changing around the defence, and Histon were annoying Uniteds attack who were playing well. Then the miss of the season, the ball runs through the box to James Rowe with the keeper at the far post, he had half an open goal, he slotted the ball wide to the joy of literally everyone, except the Histon fans that couldve fitted on a Jet Ski. Russell Eldridge had one of his trade-mark free kicks tipped over well by Hulyer. From the resulting corner keeper Chris May went up for it, he missed it, Histon cleared and Neil Kennedy who had an open goal from 40 yards out missed the target with a rather poorly placed shot. But Histon extended their lead deep into injury time, James Rowe went past Jimmy Elford in the box and dispatched the ball into the bottom corner. Histon didnt deserve to win by such a scoreline, but it didnt matter as they finished runners up, for all it matters, they end up the same as Stamford in seventh place, only prize money differs. But no-one could fault the effort by United today, simply sensational at times, the passing movements are looking great and were now looking a side with confidence, a side that could challenge for promotion next season. ClaretnBlue Man Of The Match Carl Rook Mark Green The player of the season though hard and scored a good goal, while Mark Green was instrumental, maybe his last game for the club, the best player on the pitch, but I couldnt fault Carls effort today. Anyway sad to see the season over and done with, but looking forward to next season, anyway some changes to the site soon, already started on them, so should be updated quite quickly throughout the summer. Thanks for reading my dribble, the reports will be back before you know it!! |
